Creating the world’s thinnest watch doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t happen in a month, or a year, or even a decade. It takes several lifetimes of expertise, development, successes, failures-all to get to this: the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept. This watch is 2mm thick. Let’s find out how it was done.

Thank you for actually showing us the other watches / movements you refer to in the narration. All too often in the past I've had to be looking stuff up in another window while I watch just to understand what you are talking about. More of this, please (and don't be afraid to use still photos if you can't get your hands on the items in question!)

Piaget actually produces custom extra thin straps. So in order to change it you must buy an original.
@Ohmie
@Ohmie 3 года назад
SmashEX Entertainment alternatively, you could buy a custom-made strap. I make luxury straps, and the thinnest strap in my lineup is just 2mm thick. I use a synthetic internal liner called Velodon to provide stretch resistance, so it’s still insanely durable. Hermès uses the same material in their straps, and I’d imagine Piaget likely does for the strap on this watch as well.

A notable reason that watchmakers have been able to make thinner watches now than they could in the 60's is not just the advances that have been made in materials science and manufacturing.... ⌚📏 ...the fashions today allow for manufacturers to spread the movement out laterally much more than before. Diameter of movement: 1957 Piaget 9P: 20.5mm 2018 Piaget 900P-UC: 41.0mm This is literally double the movement diameter, and consequently four times the usable surface area, so it becomes apparent where they have been able to make advances.
@deedee8568
@deedee8568 3 года назад
It's double the diameter. The increase in area is squared.
@SilencedMi5
@SilencedMi5 3 года назад
@@deedee8568 Great observation! That further clarifies the point! πr²
@watchnerds
@watchnerds 3 года назад
You mean 910p? The 900p is 38mm in diameter. And agreed, the finissimo series are really thin due to more "spread out" part constructions rather than stacked up in most usual watch, resulting in a really "wide" watch, it looks strange in my small wrist.
@SilencedMi5
@SilencedMi5 3 года назад
@@watchnerds No, I meant what I said - the 900P-UC, which is 41mm in diameter per Piaget's documentation. I agree that 41mm can push the scale of proportionality for anyone with slightly below average wrist sizes, and the thinness doesn't help in that respect in my opinion.
@watchnerds
@watchnerds 3 года назад
@@SilencedMi5 ah... I see... the 900p-UC for the Antiplano ultra-thin concept... Sorry I didn't know the movement calibre, only the name. For a round cased watch it's still okay, but for a square or rectangular watch, it's very wide. I had 15-16cm wrist but I found 34-37mm watches for a three hander are my sweet spot (thus why I mainly collect vintages instead) and for complications, max would be 41mm in round case (though strangely the freak Diavolo and hyt h0 fit just fine). Modern reverso totally unwearable for my wrist now as the cases are hanging in my wrist, thus why I would stick with the old grande taile case instead. I mean, I've worn MB&F HM2 before, totally wearable but big cz the case literally looks like you strapped on a cassette. Idk why manufactures nowadays made wide/big watches unlike the gold era of the 50-60es watches. Well... That aside, you could basically make a very thin watch with that kind of approach.... Like wider watch. A ceramic/silicium bridges (eliminating the needs of the jewels for pivots and oil), silicone gear pinion combo instead traditional construction (pinion+pivot made separately from its gear before assembled into one part), fiber glass mainspring inside a carbon fiber barrel, using things like bolt instead of screw, a flying balance+escapement, 45mm wide and voila, 1.5mm thin watch.

I do watch repair. I have an estate jewelry client who sends me vintage Piagets that he sells. Mostly 9P movements. Precious metal cases and stone dials. It's a simple manual wind movement. But, even those are so thin that even simple disassembly and assembly is tedious. Very tedious. Actually, I had 2 more arrive today to work on! They definitely have a charm about them.

That's actually a good point without joking. I talked to a few watchmakers about such ultra thin watches like those Piaget's and Bulgari's. They actually said that these are very delicate watches to handle as it is possible to bend the case under not welcome circumstances so that the movements will stop or even could be damaged. So these are no everyday watches... on the other hand you don't drive your ultra hypercar to the supermarket as well so I think that's kind of okay ;-)

I donät know how thick the Piaget 9P actually was, but the Calibre 1003 made for Vacheron-Constantin originally and I think others by Jaeger-LeCoultre was 1.7mm thick on debut in 1955, and has since been slimmed further to 1.64 according to Vacheron, who still produces it for their Historiques 1955 watches. I know; I own a Vacheron & Constantin 6115 Patrimony equipped with that movement, and the watch is unfathomably thin- excluding the crystal, way thinner than these things.

@watchnerds
@watchnerds 3 года назад
@@leehazlewoodism it held concentrically against the movement periphery, generally with ruby bearing, and another bearing which usually likely made out of ceramic adorned in one of reversing wheel. The Bvlgari thinnest (current world record) tourbillon automatic also use the same technique to shave off its thickness. Cheapest watch with such movement you could buy in the market at the moment are Longines with cal 340 and Citizen Jet watches, while they appears as a central rotor, technically they're one of the application of such rotor. And, technically, Vacheron Constantin cal 1120 also counts as pheriperal rotor as well, used in several brands, which one of them is Audemars Piguet watches in some of their Royal Oak lines (cal 2120). Vacheron also made some movement with such rotor combined with chronograph and tourbillon. Patek Philippe used to develop this kind of movement with their cal 350. Jlc also used one in their Hybris Mechanica ultra thin minute repeater tourbillon automatic. Breguet also used this kind of mechanism in their thinnest tourbillon movement (and one with the perpetual calendar equation of time, Breguet Marine Équation Marchante used the same base movement) and in Tradition Minute Repeater. Cartier interpretation also unique and playful in their watches equipped with the cal. 9603 MC. AP also made one of the RO watch with in house cal. 2897. Other ones would be watches with movement made by Carl F. Bucherer and Dewitt, with Carl F. Bucherer one is the most recent affordable one you could get on the market now
