As always excellent (technical) review @Movie Collector . No “Rocky” movie for me without Stallone though. As you asked what’s lacking in this movie? SYLVESTER STALLONE! 😄😉😉 and yes, as with many modern movies: HEART, an actual good script and genuine love for movies. BTW thanks to your review I bought War of the Worlds in 4K a “while” ago and finally had a chance to watch it yesterday. I forgot what a enjoyable movie this was and was blown away how great it looked in 4K. Thanks for the “reminder” to this underrated movie, John!😊👍🏻

Was that the Steven Spielberg 'War of the Worlds' Pieter? It looks better on that 4K disc than it did when I saw it in the cinema. It was one of the films that had me sat there wondering what the hell had gone wrong with image quality in cinemas over recent years. I think the first film I noticed the decline was The Matrix and thereafter there were many more that were worse culminating in War of the Worlds and the big screen version of Miami Vice which I saw at The Empire on their huge screen. That was truly awful and soon after I gave up on cinema altogether. I now only go if I know a film print is being screened and now I've added that it has to be shot and finished on film because Death on the Nile was a little disappointing and apparently did get struck from the lowly 4K video master file. It's awful what has been done to this once great entertainment industry but it will be okay again when you and I take over! Another comment summed up the problem with Creed 3 - it's about retribution. That goes against every former Rocky and Creed film in the series and that's why it doesn't really work. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Absolutely you can't beat getting lost in Row after row! The main one here in Sheffield City Center is still like that, 2 floors high street style.. However unfortunately for Bluray/4k the Meadowhall shopping centre one got downsized and carries about 20% of the discs it used to. I hope that doesn't happen elsewhere!

Thank you Erik. Not the easiest film to review (Creed 3) but it's not complete rubbish, far from it, so I didn't want to stand there and say it was awful. I hope I succeeded. There are some good aspects but it doesn't follow the tone of what went before as far as I can see. John.

Great video as always, John. You should give the new 4K Blu-ray of After Hours from Criterion a look. It’s definitely one of my favorites and I thought the transfer looked great. The standard blu-ray that it comes with is region A locked and thats the disc with the special features but I’m sure you have a region free player.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
Criterion discs usually don't require a multi-zone Blu-ray player Sean as any player can get round the code. It's just the cost of importing them that means they're a once in a blue moon purchase for me. There are many titles available in the USA that I'd like to see but it's just not possible. If this channel suddenly became successful and started earning some money then that could change though. John.
@sean9920
@sean9920 Год назад
@@moviecollector5920 I understand, John. They are expensive even when you aren’t importing them. I would say importing After Hours is probably worth it though if you like the movie and are in the market for a Criterion because it has never been released on blu-ray anywhere in the world other than Spain (which was a terrible release because I have it.) So, this Criterion is really the only good physical release the movie has had. Just keep in mind that when you are in the market for another Criterion, they always go on sale for 50% off in the months of July and November at Barnes and Noble (I don’t know if they have international shipping) and US Amazon always price matches Barnes and Noble and that is as cheap as Criterions will ever get. So, if you are going to buy, wait until it’s either July or November.

I saw this on a whim at the Bfi IMAX, and while the fuller scope fight sequences were great fun and audience seemed invested, I unfortunately felt like all those scenes were let down by the use of green screen which it seemed like they used for all the ring backgrounds - I'm not sure they gave it enough budget to allow for it to be blown up to such a big screen, hair and such didn't quite integrate well enough to me - I also wondered if they added green spotlights to the first fight on purpose to avoid fixing the green reflections in the shiny gloves too.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
I did suspect the ringside crowds were largely special effects Marcus but it did work well through my system. No doubt the video projector at the BFI IMAX would show up any inadequacies a whole lot easier than my little home video projector. I hadn't thought about the green lighting though which you're probably right about. It's actually a good idea because it meant they could disguise the requisite effects work and make the whole setting look really good too. It's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination but there are some good and interesting aspects to it. John.

Never have been that interested in Creed, but I really only saw the first Rocky. Interestingly enough, Sly Stallone appeared in and co-wrote the first 2, but not the 3rd one which could have something to do with it lacking in some ways. I’ve never heard of Lair, but I’m interested! Thanks for the vid, John, great as always!

Morning Timothy. I suspect that Mr. Stallone saw the script of the storyline proposal and could see it didn't have the same appeal and heart as all the previous films in the series and ducked out of it. It was probably too late for him to encourage any changes so it would meet the standards of the previous couple of films but what do I know? There were plenty of good aspects to this film but it just wasn't quite right for this series. John.

I enjoyed Creed III with the exception of Rocky (Stallone) not being a part it. To me Rock faced a lot of adversity, difficulties. Same holds true for Adonis Creed. This time his past comes back to haunt him and finds himself figuring out how to deal with everything it brought with it. Jonathan Majors made for a great “bad guy” and we will see more of him in upcoming Marvel Avengers movies as Kang which he has done a marvelous job so far. I will definitely check out The Lair as I do like those kind of movies.

To be fair, the makers tried to do something a little bit different but came up a little short and that was possibly due to inexperience. I remember in the trailer at the IMAX, Michael Jordan talked to camera claiming it was IMAX (which it isn't of course) and how you could see every hit or punch up close. That made me suspect that he was hoping that the IMAX name and claim would be enough to entice people along to video projection cinemas. I dare say it worked but it seems most were disappointed with the film if the comments on here are anything to go by. John.

Another great review John :) I haven't seen Creed 3 yet but I really enjoyed the first film. Michael B. Jordan is a great actor and I like his character but Stallone steals the show in Creed and is the main reason why I watched it in the first place. I really wanted to like Creed 2, especially since it saw the return of Dolph Lundgren's Ivan Drago. But I just didn't think it was good sequel and it annoyed me that they cut the Rocky vs Drago fight scene (something that upset Stallone). Unfortunately Stallone is not in Creed 3 and it makes me less interested in watching this film. Apparently it's cuz Stallone has a conflict with Winkler about the rights to Rocky and Stallone didn't like the tone of Creed 3. The Lair seems interesting, I will definitely check it out :)
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
The tone of Creed 3 is what hurts it. Another comment summed up what is wrong in one word and that is 'resentment'. The Damian Anderson character develops resentment towards his 'brother' when he sees that he isn't supporting him just as he achieves his life's ambition. I couldn't understand what was happening and it simply didn't work. It could have been handled better and could have been more of a Cain and Abel story with a beautiful ending that glued their friendship back together... but they didn't do it. Inexperience methinks. The Lair was a good surprise. It's not the best film ever made but it's a modern creature/science fiction/horror flick that doesn't fall apart like just about every modern horror. For a more mature audience than the teenager/twenty something cinema goer these things are usually aimed at. Maybe that's why it didn't get a theatrical release now that I think about it. John.

I watched this film in a regular cinema screen and enjoyed it, not as much as the first two but it was still a good film. It was a shame the 1.90:1 sections weren't kept for this disc but I suppose they had their reasons. I don't think it will be worth re-releasing in the future but that could be what was in mind. The Lair was a surprise - a modern horror, sci-fi that didn't fall apart towards the end. If you do see it I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I did. John.

Hi John! Can't wait to see the Lair now! May just do a blind buy based on this recommendation. The Creed films I have not seen yet so need to catch up there. The screen shots you showed looked great so will consider getting these and going through them. Forgot that Neil Marshall directed the Descent and also Hellboy which I enjoyed as well as Centurion. I liked that one as well. Glad to hear the sound quality of the fight scenes in Creed are worthwhile. I'll be watching alone however as my missus avoids any boxing related content hahaha my best to you guys and have a great weekend! Cheers Dave !

@moviecollector5920 Год назад
I watched Centurion a month or two back Dave. Very good other than the penchant for using modern English swear words which didn't seem to fit somehow. The Lair isn't the greatest film ever made but I strangely enjoyed it and found it very interesting. Usually these modern horror type movies go to pieces from about an hour in but this one doesn't. It keeps going and ultimately concludes without becoming completely ridiculous. A rare achievement today. If you like Dog Soldiers then you should enjoy The Lair. If you're fanatical about Dog Soldiers you'll probably find The Lair a little disappointing. I'm the former of the two but I think I prefer The Lair. John.

Nice review as always, John. I still haven't seen Creed III, but it's on Prime so I'll give it a look soon. Interesting that you said that the movie lacked heart. But it makes sense since it also lacked Stallone. And Sly has always been the heart of the Rocky and Creed films. I think that's part of the reason I haven't sat down to watch III yet.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
Most comments so far indicate CREED III has been a bit of a disappointment so if you do watch it go into it with lowered expectations and you may find it's much better. I might have been expecting a little too much, after all it is the ninth film in a series so how often can they keep coming up with something new that actually works? Resentment is the key to this story and that's different to each previous installment but it just didn't seem to suit the characters. John.

I agree with the review. I also expected more based on the initial reviews. It was solid but not the best. Fights looked great. I streamed this so it wasn't the best quality 4k material. as a boxing fan, I had trouble believing that a guy with zero professional experience can get a title shot on his first fight. Rocky movies always stretch reality but this was a bit much.

@moviecollector5920 Год назад
I agree with you Luis. I'd have been banging my fist on the desk if I'd have been in storyline meetings because it just wasn't right. It needed more fleshing out before cameras rolled because it should have had conflicting emotions and a love between the two 'brothers' and a reticence to actually go into the ring to fight. Something was needed to then force the issue and get them in there. I don't know what that 'something' would have been but get a room full of semi-intelligent people together and they'd have come up with something. John.

I too was disappointed that the 1.90:1 sequences weren't included but I suppose the studios are trying to give cinemas something different and better to screen than is available for the home market.' The image quality was excellent which is impressive because it was shot entirely on video which proves, once again, that's it can be as good as most 35mm films. However, watched the 4K of The Fabelmans last night and that was even nicer to look at and that one was a 35mm shoot. Laser IMAX' is just a video projector with the light source coming from a laser so don't be fooled. To see IMAX means getting to one of the three remaining genuine IMAX cinemas in the UK (or wherever else you may be) for one of the 15/70 IMAX films. OPPENHEIMER is coming up and that looks to be set for huge success. Just a shame so many people will see it IMAX branded cinemas that are just a lowly 2K or 4K (ish) video projection. John.

I saw the old Odeon in Leicester. What a beautiful building but how sad that the industry is no longer strong enough to be able to justify wonderful structures like that to entice audiences in. It's just along from the Phoenix which I suppose is the modern replacement but in there screens 3 and 4 don't even come with masking on the screens. I think we have the wrong people running the industry these days. No wonder it's in terminal decline. Leicester HMV is great. I hope to have the time to get a dedicated video done in the coming week. Hi Everybody, a slightly off-topic question related to the filming method. John mentioned it was shot on 8K and 4K video. I have googled this but can't get an answer... Does 'shooting on 4K video' simply mean using a digital camera with 4/8K capability, so the whole thing is held on memory cards and servers etc, or... (I feel I may embarrass myself here), does it mean shooting onto a 4K video cassette? When I google it I mainly get results about using my iPhone. This is driving me mad, even if by typing this out I feel I may have come to a logical conclusion. Any comment is welcomed, or feel free to just have a giggle 🙂

Onto a pair of simultaneously written SD cards in a very disc space heavy format. I would expect the 8K camera to be different to the 4K but I'm happy to be corrected there. Another important factor is the lens used. Use a poor lens and you could be shooting genuine IMAX and it would still look poor. Use a top-notch lens and you'll get the best results possible providing the lighting is suitable. There's a lot more to image quality than we tend to casually think about. Put a shutter in a camera and it will be even better but the industry hasn't worked that out yet. Coming soon I think. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thanks John, that's put my mind to rest. When I hear the word 'video' I also hear 'tape'. I couldn't for the life of me believe tape was being used. Anyway, thanks again, keep up the good work! Best wishes, Lee
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
@@leehawkins616 No one uses analogue video these days, well not many people anyway. That's why it's rather pointless calling it digital video any longer. The industry started using the word 'digital' because it's fashionable whereas what it really denotes is binary, which is not a fashionable word. Pathetic really but it makes film makers feel better when they say 'shot digitally' rather than 'shot on video' and I'm sure it's because they feel a bit inadequate not being able to shoot on film. Video is nothing to be embarrassed about any longer. It's not the complete joke it always was before digital video started to appear. It's almost perfected now and just requires the final few tweaks such as the addition of a shutter to give it the more natural look of film. I think a 4K video of 2 hours occupies about 150 to 200Gb on a cinema RAID 5. Probably not as big as you'd expect. The 15/70 IMAX prints of OPPENHEIMER are 11 miles long. John.

I really like Creed; it hooked me from the very first frame. I enjoyed Creed 2 as well, but a little less than the first one. They are both fairly whaghty films. I found Creed 3 felt much lighter. It told a darker story but with a much lighter feel to it. Still, it was brilliant work for a first-time director, and I applaud it for that.

I've been wondering if it was the inexperience of the film makers that led them along the wrong path Timothy. Maybe without Stallone there to tell them they were portraying the characters incorrectly they didn't seen the error. A bit of a re-think and the story could have been set up that the two of them ended up in the ring at the climax to battle each other reluctantly. That would have pulled at the heart strings. John.

Abba, the Bee Gees, rock music of all types other than punk and anyone who can play or sing well but that no longer included Elton John and even Paul McCartney at times as I find they've lost their voices these days. I rarely get time to play anything any longer though so it's all largely academic. John.
