Nina Simone should not be forgotten doing this in the mid '60's as well. A jazz blues version with some scat to bring out the crazy. All these artists put their own bent on Hawkins' great tune!
No one can match John Fogerty’s vocals. People ignore how great a guitar player he is as well. So glad I got to listen to these guys while I was growing up.
If this was sung musically or lyrically.. I would have a hard time believing someone could put a spell on me. John's aggressiveness has convinced me that he certainly could put a spell on me... He already did
One of my favorites is "Green River" but wish it was longer. Amazing what they accomplished with just a few guitars and a drum. Piano/keyboard added later on.
CCR is my fav group of all time. Lead singer, guitarist, & songwriter is John Fogerty. A living legend. His voice is distinctive, iconic, and immediately recognizable. He still tours today with his kids. I grew up on this music during rock's golden era- the 60s and 70s.
CCR does have the best version of this. Annie did this song at 60 just to show you she can still belt it out. Check out some of her older stuff like Why. Thx man.
So many versions/covers of this song and so many good ones - this one my fav, original is fantastic, surprisingly I absolutely love Angelina Jordan's version (a great interpretation) this girl is sooo gifted
as someone who grew up on the blues and was born in the 60s in the South, always go as far back as possible with a particular song and move forward. Remember, the blues is born out of pain and hardship. It is almost impossible for today's blues artists to bring that kind of emotion to the music because, they've never actually experienced the pain and sheer destitution that the blues was born out of. The best renditions aren't the new ones. (That being said, try Born Under a Bad Sign with Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan!)
The original by screamin 'Jay Hawkins has been covered by many artists. CCR was my favorite for a long time but then came Angelina Jordan cover version of I Put a spell on you inspired by Jay's version. Angelina's version ( 8 M ) blew me away. CCR version and Angelina's version are so different and cannot be compared. If you dare, please try Angelina's mega performance but the black and white video.✌️🎅✌️💯 *AJ* 💯
CCR songs you may want to react to: Born On the Bayou; Run Through the Jungle; Fortunate Son. The last two were about the Vietnam War. They were some song tracts of Vietnam movies and you would probably recognize. I think these we’re their best hits.
As a performer, if you can't do the song justice, then you shouldn't do a cover. You will always be compared and you should expect it. If you can't, stick to your own songs then. It doesn't have to be better. Heart's cover of Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin is a good example of doing a great cover that wasn't really better, but they did it justice. They could walk away with their heads up.
I just looked through all your vids and noticed that while you have reviewed several CCR songs, only one of them is among my favorites. Seriously, most of their best stuff was on their first two albums, after which they seemed to "go commercial." Same thing happened to Grand Funk after their first three albums. I would really like to hear your reaction to *Born On A Bayou, Penthouse Pauper, Ninety Nine And A Half Won't Do* which I consider three of their best...
"I put a spell on you" is the kind of song that is everybody & nobody's song. Originally made by Screamin' Jay Hawkins (worth watching on YT), it has been covered many many times, & each time, there's a new twist to it. And since you're focused on that song, I suggest you watch Angelina Jordan's version at 9 Y-O singing it as a tribute to Jay Hawkins. You will 100% be blown away, gobsmacked by her rendition. A.J. (as she's called by her fans) is the rising superstar from Norway. She released her first single last month at 14. An album is on the way by Repupblics Studios. Check out her version of the song, PLS.
You're right, it isn't fair to compare anyone to Creedence. When they do a cover, it's fantastic and usually the best version. Speaking of, check out their live version of Suzie Q (over 10 minutes) that's included on the 40th anniversary release of their self-titled debut album.
instant stank face !........Screamin' Jay says......."Oh Yeah, you better sing, bro.....".........this song was originally done by "Screamin Jay" Hawkins in 1956 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7kGPhpvqtOc.html)
As others have said do Angelina Jordan's cover of this song when she was 9 yrs. old. She did it as a tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins and it's not just great because she's 9, it's great period!
Usually an artist who does his own song owns that song. This is one of those cases. Now Tina Turner stole Proud Mary from John Fogerty and made it her own. Aretha Franklin stole R E S P E C T from Otis Redding. He actually acknowledged that in an interview. He said the song was no longer his.
Let me play the devil's advocate Song I heard it through the grapevine artist 1) CCR 2) Marvin Gaye & 3) Gladys knight & the Pips Song proud Mary Artist 1) CCR & 2) Tina Turner Dare you to go there 😹😹😹😹😹
Creedance is so good--- the song is timeless---goes way back in my day---but ----I suggest you listen to a nine year girl-Angelina Jordan do her cover of this great song---let ,me say it again---a young 9 year old Norwegian girl ---sounds like a grown woman --- hope you like it
CCR was so tight and John Fogerty's voice is one of a kind. There's not really a comparison. It's like trying to compare any band to Led Zeppelin imo. LZ just stood alone, different from anyone else.
Try Brian Ferry of Roxy Music's cover, a completely different take. The mark of a fundamentally good song, Everyone can do it, do it differently, and have it turn out magic.
I personally like listening to different versions of the same song. I discover many new artists that way. For both the versions of songs you are comparing, I like them both the same. I find the styles different.
Thank you doing this version by CCR they are great. Still waiting for some reactor to do Gerry Rafferty’s “Get it Right this time” live jam, please bro, do this one for us.
Screaming J Hawkins original is closer to ccr version, but they are all so different everone has their favorite. But as one of your subscribers said, 1965 Nina Simone version you need to hear before you decide, IMO.
So glad CCR left the bubblegum sounding junk from their earlier music and created their own bluesy-rock-honky tonk style that will always endure. And I'm glad they're not called "The Golliwogs" anymore. Creedence Clearwater Revival sounds so much better.
You've said Led Zeppelin is the GOAT, I think ZZ Top is just as good or better. Check out that lil ole band from Texas. Blue Jean Blues is a good place to start JB
John, I love they boys from TX, they have such a groove. But as good as LZ? LZ diverse sound, their cohesiveness, besides every band member being in the top 5 on their particular instrument. And Billy, great boogie voice, one of the best, but not even in the same hemisphere with Robert Plant. sorry, not just my opinion, but the opinion of most music lovers.
May I suggest you react to Matchbox Twenty How Far We’ve Come. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X8mf5_2lsE8.html They have so many great songs, this is a fantastic live performance.
