Carolina, I am expecting my Cricut Maker any day now so finding your videos is timely. I am a an avid quilter and enjoy machine embroidery as well, so I am forward to using my Cricut Maker to cut unusual blocks where the designer provides a PDF file or template or to cut fabric for appliqués. Have you pulled SVG files into design space? Do you know if the files retain their original size or does Design space resize them? My second question is about the mats. Can you clean the mats if there is too much residue from a project such as felt? If so, what do you use. On another machine I use oil free baby wipes. Will that work on Cricut mats? Thank you for your videos. I love your mechanical Viking!

Thank you! You can't resize these blocks, because the seam allowance would resize with the block, which wouldn't work. But if you know what size to cut your pieces, and the pieces are smaller than 11.5x23.5", then yes, you can cut it on the Maker. 💖

Hi Carolina it's the first time I doing quilting and I so happy that I can use my Cricut Maker to cut the materials. I wondering if it is possible to group for example the same colors of block 4 and 5 on a mat. I tried to copy and paste the forms and it doesn't work. I hope my explanations are clear since my mother tongue is French. You give me the go to do it thanks.
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 4 года назад
Hi!! Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, Cricut Design Space doesn't let you copy from one to another. And when I set these up, I set them up as one-at-a-time. However, I made a second series which follows this one. That one allows you to cut all pieces at once by color, or to cut them one block at a time. If you find it very annoying, you can make the shapes. They are all simple squares, rectangles and triangles. Click on one, see the size, then go to the other tab and re-create it. I hope that helps!! I hope you all are staying safe! ❤

@DeniseFCoutu
@DeniseFCoutu 4 года назад
Why do you have to mark out the cuts first with the pen?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 4 года назад
Great question! The cuts are not actually marked with the pen. The pen marks the sewing lines, which are 1/4" in from the cut lines. If you're already comfortable using a sewing machine, you can toggle off the drawing lines and just cut.
@juliwoolley2676
@juliwoolley2676 6 лет назад
Is it required/necessary to use the marking pen before cutting....or just a precautionary measure??
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 6 лет назад
Juli Woolley you don't have to mark the quilt blocks. The lines show where your 1/4" seam allowance is, which can be helpful for beginners. But if you are already comfortable with your 1/4" seam, you can skip that step. 😊

Hi Carolina, I really enjoyed your video. I am new to the cricut maker and I really want to do this. This was defiantly the best how to do video that I came across. I was just wondering if I want to use your patches you made but make this as a throw quilt, is it better to just make duplicate patches and cut out my own sashing and borders or is it better to make the patches bigger? Like I said I am new to this and never sewed anything before in my life lol so I want to do the easiest route possible. I am afraid that if I adjust the size on design space I will screw it up because I am horrible at measurements as well and I do not want to waste fabric if possible because we all know fabric is not that cheap. Is hard for me to picture in my head what size your blocks are until I actually get started. I am not even sure how many blocks I will need to complete a throw. I do not want something to big. I am looking to just get it about a throw blanket size.
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 6 лет назад
JENNIFER LONG hi! I know I already responded on Facebook, but wanted to respond here just in case someone else has the same question: Hi! I am so glad you are enjoying the series! If you want to make it larger, there are lots of ways you can do that. One is to make more blocks. Each block is 6"x6" once sewn into the quilt. If you need to visualise it, you can cut a piece of standard paper to 6x6. Another way is to make the sashings larger. You could do this in combination with making more blocks. More blocks and larger sashings would make the quilt bigger fast. Add a larger border, and a second even larger border, and suddenly you have a MUCH bigger quilt. I would not play with the size of the blocks. All of the cut out pieces include the seam allowance. If you increase the size, you also increase the seam allowance. Suddenly, the pieces don't fit together anymore. To resize the blocks, you have to to-do all the math. Totally possible, but not exactly beginner-friendly. :)

Love this. A question....can you use the scraper to clean the threads from the mat?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 7 лет назад
Jean McNulty You do not want to use the scraper on the pink mats. It will scrape up the adhesive. You can use tweezers to pick up threads, use transfer tape to peel them off, or just leave them alone. A few stray threads are fine.

Cheryl Hight hi there! Depending on the system you use, it can trip things up. If you click on the link from a computer (PC or Mac) it should take you to the right place. However, if you click from a mobile device (phone or tablet) it tries to route you through the app, which causes issues. I have heard that they were resolving this on iOS devices, but have not heard anything about Android devices. So, if you click the link on your computer, you can then save it to your Design space files and pull it up on whatever device you use to connect to your Maker. Let me know if you still have any issues... we will get it all figured out for you! ❤️

What kind of cutter did you use in your machine for cutting material.
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 3 года назад
I used the rotary blade. The only Cricut machine that currently works with the rotary blade is the Cricut Maker. If you have a Cricut Explore, Cricut Explore Air, or older, it would not be able to use the rotary blade.
@carmeltaylor8075
@carmeltaylor8075 3 года назад

@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 3 года назад
Fun! However, it won't work with the rotary blade. If you starch your fabric well, and use a fresh blade, you *might* be able to get these pieces to mostly cut on your machine. The fine point blade (the standard blade on the machine you have) can sometimes get stuck on the threads in fabric, which is why it doesn't cut fabric as well as the rotary blade does.

Can we use a different pattern and can we cut the blocks larger?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 4 года назад
I'm not sure what you mean by a different pattern. Each block is it's own pattern. If you want something different you can look in design space - there are several options there. If you wanted to cut the blocks larger, you would have to re-do all the math. Each piece has 1/4" seam allowance. If you tried re-sizing the pieces, you'd also re-size the seam allowance, which would distort the block.

I’m thinking about purchasing a maker. Would this machine benefit me if I hand sew my blocks?
@CarolinaMoore

The Maker can cut fabric and can mark fabric. Once the fabric is cut, you can choose to hand sew or machine sew it. I used the Maker to cut Hexagons for some English Paper Piecing that I did, which is hand sewing. So, it can absolutely be used by people who like to hand sew.

@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 6 лет назад
H W - the Fabric marker makes a line for the 1/4" seam allowance. Beginners can find it easier to sew on the line rather than use a 1/4" foot. But if you don't want the line you can just toggle it off before cutting.

Can we buy other fabric? How do we shop for Bonded? or Non-Bonded material? I want to make a twin quilt. Possible?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 4 года назад
Yes! You can buy other fabric. You want to use quilting cottons. They have lots of options at quilt stores or places like JoAnns and Hobby Lobby. This quilt uses 5 fabrics, a half yard of each. Yes, you can make it into a twin quilt. This mini quilt is 45" x 45". And I made a sequel with 9 more blocks that is also 45"x45". You can make several of these mini quilts and stitch them together to make a bigger quilt. Or, you can just make a lot more blocks and stitch those together. Another option would be one of the quilts in Design Space. I did a video series on one of those. I can't wait to see what you make! ❤
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 4 года назад
Oh... and "bonded" fabric is fabric that has something fused to the back. Usually fabric is not sold this way. But when making clothes, someone would iron on stabilizer for the collar (bonding the stabilizer to the fabric). Or if you wanted to do applique, you'd use a fusible like HeatnBond on the back of your applique pieces to bond them to the background fabric.

Hi Carolina,I have patterns I bought prior owning a cricut maker , is there a way to upload them to design space?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 6 лет назад
Great question! SVG files and JPEG files can be imported into Design Space, but you need to do some work. Design Space won't automatically recognize which lines are the cut lines, so it will take you through a process of identifying those. If you have paper patterns that you bought at a store, you could scan those and bring them in to Design Space. If you have quilting patterns with regular sizes (squares and rectangles - not odd curves and angles), you could just draw those shapes in Design Space. It is important to know that once you import a file into Design Space, that project is not share-able. That is why all the patterns for this quilt were created in Design Space. If I had made them in another program and then imported them into Design Space, I would not be able to share the Design Space files with you. I could only share the other files, and you would have to import them yourself.

The Cricut Maker is a silly tool for block quilt cutting. While this is a good instructional video, using the Cricut will take you much longer to cut out your pieces than using just a simple rotary cutter, straight edge and mat. This is technology in search of a problem. Don’t believe the hype.

I understand what you're saying. If I'm going to stitch a 9-patch, I don't pull out my Cricut. I grab a rotary cutter and ruler. However, that's not the best option for everyone. Someone with poor grip strength or who doesn't have mobility in both their right and left hands (such as someone recovering from a stroke), will still be able to quilt because using this machine. Cutting the fabric correctly is so essential. If the fabric isn't cut right, it doesn't matter how great your 1/4" seam is or how well you press - the quilt won't go together well. Which can be incredibly frustrating for a new quilter. Never have I said that you need a Cricut Maker to quilt. But for some people, having access to this technology will be a game changer. For other people, it will be a novelty. And for yet others, it won't have any value. And that's okay. I'm happy to continue to share products that bring more people to quilting. It is a fabulous hobby that has brought so much to my life, and the lives of many. 🥰

Hi personally I think you talk way to much .

You're probably not alone in that, but most people either keep those kinds of thoughts to themselves, or just go watch someone else on RU-vid. There are SO MANY VIDEOS here. On average, about 31 YEARS of footage (271,330 hours) uploaded EVERY DAY. So why you would spend any time watching a RU-vidr you don't enjoy is beyond me... and that you'd then take the time to leave a comment like this? I personally think you need a hobby. Might I suggest quilting?

I am new to the process. Trying to uploaded the patter but it just takes me to a screen for Design Space and I don't know how to get pattern uploaded. Do I need the Marker on?

Ade Oluyemisi I don't think you can do it from a mobile device yet. You have to go to a desktop or laptop computer to click the link. From there you can save it to your Design Space, and then open the file on your preferred device.

Ade Oluyemisi Are you clicking the link on a mobile device? I think you need to click it from a computer. Then you can save it to your design space, and open it on any of your compatible devices from the saved file.

I think the iOS app now allows clickable links for Design Space. But I haven’t heard about an Android update. 😥
