With the shrink wrap, it helps to put a piece of string up the side of the cup/tumbler, taped to the bottom before putting the shrink wrap on. Then when you take it out of the oven you can pull the string down the side and rip open the shrink wrap while it's still hot
This has been one of the most informative videos I have seen on mug sublimation. Thank you for taking the time to provide value added content to help on the journey. I just so happened to have a counter top Nuwave Bravo convection oven I use to use when I was renting. I now own a house and the oven has been sitting in garage for some time. I may put it to good use now! That oven did an amazing job in cooking my food. After a good cleaning, I hope it bakes my projects just as well. I realize once I use it for sublimation, I will not be able to go back to cooking in it again either. I am definitely a fan!

I’m wanting to get started with sublimation but I’m kind of hesitant with the cost of investment. Idk if I’ll be able to sell enough to justify the cost. 🤔 Anyway. Great video! I was able to find a decent sized convection oven at the thrift store for $10. I don't have a business (if I did, I would get a heat press with a mug attachment) so for me, the convection oven method (with silicone wrap, etc.) is less half the cost of the Cricut mug press.
You will want to look at each blank on the website where you purchased and see if they have oven instructions as each will be different. If you can't find oven instructions, try googling the same blank from other suppliers and see if they have oven instructions. It is a bit of a hunting game!

A trick with the shrink wrap is to put a piece of thread with a loop on either end under the wrap-then when done you can pull the thread to cut the wrap off will warm
I watched this video a while back and just now got to use it to make my first sublimation mugs. Thank you! It went well and I really appreciate having clear instructions to use. Now on to tumblers.

I watched 1 person arround the Holidays actually use their regular oven to sublimate by using Reynolds oven bags to completly wrap over the Mug Wraps so that you would not have any order escaping in the oven. Still a little leary. And also saw a video ( can't remember where now) To use a convection oven instead of a toaster oven because the heat is circulating and consistant. But they are a lot more expensive! I really love the cricut mug press and can't wait to get mine! Thank you so much for all your tips and tricks with doing the tall flat wall mugs!! 💖
Random oven observation: An countertop oven style air fryer seems to work best for me. And the fan blasting inside seems to eliminate hot spots. I assume any countertop convection oven would help similarly with the hot spots issue.
@@kig2086 Conventional Oven? That usually means the big oven in your kitchen. Another term is convection ovens - which have fans in them. Convection ovens can be toaster ovens but all toaster ovens are not convection ovens. See the description of this video for links to ovens if you're looking for one to use for sublimation.
Thank you, Angie for spending your time teaching and testing products. My question is, do you know if the items sold at Walmart that are coated with, I don’t know what, can be sublimated? I don’t know if I should mention the brand name. They are a metal type. Thank you for your response, if you have the time.
Walmart doesn't sell sublimation blanks. Now there are people that test various things to see if they will work. Sometimes they find something at Walmart that does in fact have polyester on the outside.
So I’m love with your channel. You do so much for us, thank you! Today I received my mug press and a box of 15oz mugs from cricut. I’m new to think however I measured my 15oz mug and it measures 12oz did anyone ever notice this, or measure their mugs before selling them? Thank you
One suggestion I found was a craft string taped under the shrink wrap to use to cut it after it is done. That trick comes from Liberty graphic designs.
i have tried the oven twice and both times the results were blurry and not too great. I used the mug press on the same design and it came out much better.

@@MsDstarr it needs to be big enough for your tumblers - standing if you can but they can lay down if the oven isn't tall enough. It also needs to have a convection setting (air fry is the same thing) and it needs to reach 400°F. Hope that helps
Appears you really gotta be on top of your game to get those items properly wrapped for best results-and quickly! I’m sure folks in the business develop a rhythm! I’m so glad I’m just a hobbyist and actually relieved I got the Mug Press instead of an oven- I just wouldn’t make enough items simultaneously to make an oven worth the space it would take up. I'm glad to see some of these blanks are going on sell. I couldn't see paying 10 to 15 dollars for mug blanks. I haven't got good results from my oven yet and it does take a lot of space on my counter.
One other question, when using the oven for sublimation does it give out any smells? I would be using it indoors so just want to make sure, thanks again!
Yes it does. I think I say that at some point in this video. I just open a window in my craft room but it definitely releases more fumes than the mug press. It may be that they are just more concentrated. The heat gun is a Darice Heat Tool. I am pretty sure they don't make them any longer but you might find some stock somewhere!
You beat me to it! I was just about to tell Angie about this! Its a genius idea. His YT is "Liberty Graphics". When I was watching Angie struggle with removing the shrink wrap, I thought of him immediately.
@@AngieHolden It was a really smart idea. Just a long piece of twine. After you wrap your tumbler in your sub paper, just lay the piece of twine lengthwise down the tumbler and put the the shrink wrap over that. Then when you are done "cooking", you simply pull the twine and it rips your shrink wrap right down the side.
@@AngieHolden i meant tear it...LOL. Thanks Patti...yes its Liberty Graphics. He used s stronger string. The video is The Best Tricks to Sublimate a 20oz Tumbler. It aired 2/25/21. The string must be heavy duty thread. He used the type that you use to stitch leather.
First, you don't want to use an oven you will be cooking in because of the fumes. The smells are not that bad. Just open a window to let some of it out.
Can you over cook the sublimation? If not why not leave it in a couple extra minutes just to be more sure that the transfer happened before you remove it from the tumbler?

Was your oven a toaster oven or a convection oven? I’ve heard that toaster ovens shouldn’t be used because of the temperature varying. Using a convection oven the heat goes around the whole oven and stays that temperature. What do you think about this? Is this possible? Have you thought about doing a comparison on this?
Silly question, can you over-cook the sublimation? I'm looking to expand into this, and already have a great spare oven, and love that they can do all the things, not just straight sided.
I heard from people saying if you don’t have mug press or separate oven, you can put the mug in the oven bag and use the oven you used for food. It won’t be poison, is that correct?

Great job and thank you for going over ALL the different options. Have you done, or will you be doing/trying skinny tumblers in the mug press? I've seen a few videos, but I TRUST you and your opinions! Also, can you use a sub mug again if the design didn't come out?
I haven't found a way that I love to do the skinny tumblers. I will make a video if I find one. The only way to press again is to line up your print back exactly or go over the top with a darker design.

Crazy question...since this needs to be done on a convection oven that isn’t used for food, could I use an old air fryer to make a sub mug? Those are just countertop convection ovens anyway, and I have one laying around. Hoping I could make use out of it.
Angie please help I am so confused between the terms infusible ink and sublimation printer. Can I use a laser jet printer and print the design onto the infusible ink sheet and put it on a mug and into the mug press ? Or do I have to have a sublimation printer? If I have a cricket air 2, mug press and a laser jet am I good to go? I hope I’m making sense lol cost effective for a sublimation versus infusible or is it a preference?
Infusible Ink sheets are basically ink trapped into sheet form. It is a more accessible form of sublimation for those that don't have a printer. Sublimation is a special ink that is transferred to the surface. Both use the same technology with a special poly coating that reacts with the ink to make it permanent. So, you don't need to print onto an Infusible Ink sheet as the ink is already there. Also, your laser printer can't do sublimation as you need a special ink. Sublimation is more cost effective after you make the initial investment into a printer/ink setup. But if you don't have the money to do that, Infusible Ink definitely works!
The silicone wraps are expensive so I am not sure which is a money saving. And I guess it would be which would be more environmentally friendly to make, etc.
Black transfers last? what color would it be if the transfer did not transfer much off the paper. but the black lettering turned brown? how does that happen? fyi that would be in an oven

What if you use one silicone ziptie per hole of one end to the other end and tighten instead of tightening around the whole cup that would put more tension on the silicone wrap 🤔
Not sure if you're still monitoring these comments, but I'm very curious about the aluminum tumblers. I own one a few that I purchased a while ago. There's no logo or imprint on it, and I have no way of knowing if it's a "BLANK". How can I tell if I can sublimate on it? Can I sublimate on any tumbler?
It needs to have a polyester coating. There really isn't a way to tell on something you already purchased though. I try to keep them separate in my craft area.
