In the Fall of 2011, Maple Batalia, a young university student with a promising career as an actor and model, was brutally shot and slashed to death on the campus parking lot in Surrey, B.C.
The killing made international headlines, sparking Surrey's Punjabi community and her family to make continued calls for justice and to arrest her murderer.
Amid rapidly mounting pressure, the RCMP are tasked with piecing together Maple's mysterious personal life and the days leading up to her death, only to find several of the key clues missing, including a security camera that panned away from the scene of her death just moments before she was killed.

The way he tore up her picture than threw it on the floor gave me chills, this is a sick man and he should never be let out of jail. But we all know that the justice system here in Canada sucks and doesn’t care about the victims, only the criminals. RIP to beautiful Maple. Such a sad waste of a life.

I have so much anger when I see or hear stories like this. Stastics show that a person is most vulnerable to an attack by a former partner right after the person breaks up with said partner. Maple did everything correctly. After Gary approached her and her male companion at Tim Hortons and Gary attacked Maple's companion in front of her. She went to the police for protection. A peace bond was issued for Gary to stay away from Maple. By doing this, she & her family thought she was protected and would be safe. I am baffled that police know these stastics about domestic partner abuse, and they knew how vulnerable Maple was....Why the hell did they not take the time to trail Gary and check in on what he was up to after he was presented with the Peace Bond? There are too many offenders in Canada that slip through these Peace Bonds. Why can't there be something put into place so these offenders be tracked by police? A very similar situation occurred in 1972 to my aunt in London ON. She had separated from her abusive husband. She had moved out of their martial home when she had the separation papers served to her husband. On the papers, her new address was revealed to him. Once he found out where she and their 3 young children were, he started stalking them all. Following the oldest child to school every morning. Following my aunt when she went to work, even finding out the name and address of the childcare hired to look after the children. Once, the nanny reported to my aunt that a man in a white Chevy Nova was following her to and from my aunt's house. She called the police to find out what she could/should do. Talking out a peacebond was suggested to my aunt and the nanny. The next morning, my aunt arranged for my grandmother to come to the house to watch the children, and she and the nanny went to the police station and filed for the Peace Bonds two seperate one for the nanny and a second for my aunt. By describing the white Chevy Nova & the plate number, the police could look up to find out it was my aunt's estranged husband that was stalking them. The peacebonds were served to him within 24 hours of when they had been filed. The following day, the nanny came out that morning to go to work only to find all of 45:00 her tires slashed on her car. She called police to report it, and let her know she would not be making it to work that afternoon. Thankfully, my grandma was still at my aunt's house, and she was able to help with the child care that afternoon. My aunt went to work that afternoon she was only working a short shift that day 4 hours, so she was able to load all the kids & grandma in the car to take grandma home to Byron. The white Chevy Nova was spotted by my aunt a few cars behind her while driving to Byron. The car did not follow her to my grandma's house. My aunt and the children were all in their car and headed back home. They all arrived back home, and it was bath time for the kids, then snack, a story, and then bedtime. After the children were all tucked into bed for the night. My aunt came downstairs to make lunches for the next day, called the nanny to see if she was able to get her car repaired, and asked her what the police suspected about her tires being slashed the night before? The police claimed that it was most likely some kids who had been acting up in the neighborhood as there were 5 other houses in her area where tires had been slashed. After my aunt was sitting in her living room watching TV and she felt something cold upon the back of her head. It was a sawed-off shot gun held by her estranged husband. Long story short, my aunt and her children endured 20 hours of torture and abuse at gun point by her estranged husband. After threatening to kill them all and himself. He started getting tired and eventually started falling asleep. The oldest child was sent over to the neighbors house to have them contact polce. My aunt had written a note for the neighbors to let them know what to tell police. The police were contacted and arrived at my aunts house. They were able to arrest her estranged husband without incident, and he was charged. It has taken my aunt years to recover from that night, and she still suffers symptoms of PTSD to this day. All of her children now grown adults have issues with anxiety, and her oldest child also has PTSD from the entire ordeal. I firmly believe that the person receiving a peace bond should be monitored more closely by police after it is served. The tire slashing of the nanny's and other cars in her neighborhood were done by my aunt's estranged husband as well. Now, if the police had approached my aunt's estranged husband about the nanny's tires being slashed instead of assuming that it was just kids in her neighborhood acting up. However, the police officers attending to the tire incident had no idea that there had been a peace bond issued to my aunt's estranged husband the day before the tire slashed.

Something more needs to be done to protect women & men after taking out a peace bond against a domestic partner, boyfriend, or girlfriend or same sex partner. To me, it seems that there is not much enforcement of a peace bond by police. I truly feel this needs to change for the sake of Maple and others. Come on, Canada, we can do betterand we need to do better.

The justice system sucks everywhere , the system is messed up there is no justice in keeping someone alive for taking a beautiful life away from here friends and family ,in the uk it cost £30,000 to house a convict and a officer is only paid £24,000 depending on how long you have been in service I was a officer for many years and slowly became to realise the system is corrupt and left and I'm so much happier now

The spiritual maturity & grace of Maple’s mother when speaking to Gary over the phone….. when, clearly, experiencing the unimaginable emotional pain & devastation of senselessly loosing a much loved child …..blew me away. Now, even over a decade later, the pain in the family’s heart must be raw, to some degree. I can’t even imagine if something like this happened to my daughter, who is just 3 years younger than Maple was when she died. Wishing all of Maple’s family healing, strength & grace❤️

Indeed. However, courts are right to reduce the sentence when it is a crime of passion and not a crime committed for greed and profit. I think it is right because, unlike a person who kills for money, this person is already undergoing agony for killing someone with whom he had been together for five years.

How many times do we have to hear the same story over and over again? How many more young women will have to die at the hands of their abusive partners? I am so tired of hearing that a woman goes to police about her violent partner and they do nothing about it, and then he kills her. We need change! The system NEEDS reform. Instead of useless restraining orders, why don't they detain and REQUIRE these controlling assholes for 24 hours to immeduately meet with a case officer and therapist and say: "Mr. ________, you have shown signs of a controlling abuser. You have a no contact order. In our experience, when ex girlfriends and wives leave men like you, its a very dangerous time. Abusers escalate to violence and are at risk of murdering their ex partners. This is an intervention to let you know that law enforcement is watching you very closely, and if anything happens to Ms. Batalia, you are the #1 suspect. You have already shown a pattern of violence with her, and you need to think about your actions very carefully. 25 years in prison and emerging an old man is a sad, painful, boring way to waste the rest of your life. To devastate your mother. We will find you and prosecute you. You will have to explain this to your family. Now, if you want to talk to a therapist to assist your through this difficult time, Dr. So and So here is available to you at any time." The choice is yours."

I totally am with you on this. This story of Maple is only one of MANY. It happens over and over. Victims of IPV NEED to be believed and police need to act pre-emptively. He didn't keep an eye on her and got enraged, that's ludicrous. He got a buddy to rent a car for him so he'd stay off the record. He got a gun and bought the knife before the killing, clearly looks and smells like planning. He abused her, he threatened her, he stalked her, publicly attacked her friend, breached the no contact order. Does anyone ever get a well deserved first degree murder conviction in Kanada? What chance will any victim ever have for justice when even the prosecutors find excuses for the killers? How can an experienced procecutor make herself believe that he anonymously rented a car and came armed with gun and knife, circling a dark parking space - just to "confront" her? It's blatant femicide. And it won't stop until the law puts an end to it by locking them up and throwing away the key. He saw her as his posession and came to kill out of pure rage over the break up. I bet he even had an alibi prepared. Given the fact that their families had become such close friends, this crime reveals his monstrous, narcissist character even more.

A restrainer order has the exact value as any piece of paper : absolute nothing. People served with that kind of legal documents should be forced to wear an ankle bracelet and directed to report to the police on a regular basis. That monster got a pretty heavy sentence, although many would consider that a very short time and I agree. Twenty one years until parole is a long time for anybody, the only problem I see in this tragic case is that this creature will be in his forties when he might be released and the family of his victim will still be condemned to expend the rest of their lives without her. He carefully planed this horrendous crime and he should expend the rest of his miserable life behind bars. From Toronto my heart goes to Maple's loved ones.

She was such a beautiful woman and just like the previous case I watched on this channel, she died at the hands of a person who was supposed to have loved her at the same young age of 19.To all the women reading this and watched this episode, if you are going through the same abusive, controlling behavior,do everything you can to get out of that situation and protect yourself before it's too late cause it won't change and will only get worse until as we've seen in these stories the enevitable happens.Be pro active, save yourself before it becomes too late.

This was premeditated murder. The accomplice deserved greater punishment. What a horrible crime they committed, and then the disappointment and sadness in the justice system, and terrible void left in the family’s life. My heart breaks for them.

Changes starts with the person who is being hit , walking away . If not the second time..telling friends parents. Recognising Red flags . Women know this so why do they think they can change the man. She stayed with him for 5 years .. 5 years .. please please don't make her dearh be pointless..

Isn't it a bit melodramatic that so much emphasis was put on the cameras at the university panning away from where she was murdered, spending time looking through 700 hours of video, etc. when it was only 4 days earlier she was abused by her ex and the murder was extremely violent? I mean of course, innocent until proven guilty, and the more evidence the better, but let's not pretend the police didn't know exactly where to start and end the investigation...?

Young men and women, older man and woman needs to learn that they do not "own" their current or ex-girldfirends, boy-friends, husbands or wives. Yes, it is sad, painfull, and disappointing when a relationship end for reasons 'good or bad', but must "move on with your life with ( in a changed relationship) or without this person (your-ex.) alive.

It was a technique to get him emotional enough to confess his crimes, which it worked in the end. You can see later in the interview the parents clearly state they would never be able to forgive him.

Canada needs to learn a bit from the US law. Purchasing a gun and knife prior to killing her is not a second degree murder, it is a first degree murder. Also, the guy with him should have served more knowing his friend purchased a gun - it’s enough to give him a long sentence. Canada should really amend their laws. This isn’t a joke. Letting someone out of prison this soon is not right
