I can't see a non-violent person becoming violent on mushrooms. But I can see them becoming paranoid and doing something that seems crazy to protect themselves or others. That said, using shrooms before flying shows very poor judgment, and flying after 40 hours no sleep is almost worse. Where are the airline managers that supervise these things?

I've never done mushrooms or anything like that & wasn't depressed, but... One time I had super horrible insomnia for some reason. I could not fall asleep at all. After the 2nd night, I had to go to work on Monday. Thought I was ok but on the way there, started hallucinating & was super confused about even basic things. IDK how, but I managed to pull over on the highway (didn't even think I could make it to the exit) tried to call someone (who said I was talking oddly too & was having a difficult time even telling them where I was or what the issue was) & waited for them to come & get me + my car. It was awful. Not sleeping can take a huge toll. I'm just grateful I magically had the sense enough to pull over & not drive... OR attempt to operate an airplane.

I agree it's a rough spot for a pilot. Unfortunately, airlines can't have depressed pilots for obvious reasons. Perhaps they should consider a program for pilots who are struggling with depression that lets them keep their job but keeps them out of the air while they go to treatment?

A pilot with severe depression? That’s when you put your career on hold, take FMLA, and seek treatment (even if it’s an alternative treatment, like psilocybin). It is definitely a bad situation to be in, but the alternative to seeking help is much worse. Treating depression with ketamine therapy is legal in some places (like Seattle), and very effective for some patients. I highly recommend getting a therapist who specializes in psychedelic integrative therapy. Don’t try to self-medicate without help from others with professional experience! The dosage, set and setting, and follow up therapy are crucial to getting well when using psychedelics for mental health.
@cocofox2167
@cocofox2167 11 месяцев назад
@@Woodman-Spare-that-tree It would most likely be the individual airline or a fund set up by the airline industry as a whole. Similar to how people get sick days and vacation. Mental problems need to be treated and the way the system works right now forces the pilots to choose between treatment and their lifelong dream of flying. This isn't just a job to these men and women. It's a lifelong goal and part of their personalities. Forcing them out of the air can be devastating to them which is why we sometimes see pilots take rather extreme measures to mask their illnesses to keep flying. If it wasn't a matter of choosing to keep flying or getting treatment it could well save lives.
@Dan6erous

severe depression is preceded by other lesser symptoms for which a person could seek care - unless it automatically endangers your career. There's the rub.

I met my husband on a blind date in September 2008. We had dinner at a restaurant across from the airport. As the evening went on, we noticed two guys getting really loud and rowdy in the bar part of the restaurant. When we left we saw the two guys with their pants down mooning the cars going by. The next morning, it was all over the news in Knoxville, Tn that they were pilots scheduled for an early flight the next morning. They definitely were flying high that night but they didn't do anymore commercial flying. That's for sure.

If he had succeeded in shutting down both engines, it wouldn't have been a "plummet to the ground situation" like you said. Also, at 36K feet, there was ample time to restart them. From a danger perspective, based on what actually happened (as opposed to what could have happened if this had progressed into something different), this was not nearly as bad as it sounds. And that's why the pilots were communicating so calmly. They both knew the intricacies of what just happened. As pilots, we have to get a class I medical evaluation/certificate every six months (depending on age). The problem with this, is that if someone is mentally unstable for one reason or another, they'll be inclined to not admit to any shortcomings.

I highly recommend Mentour Pilot's channel for an insider view of what flying in big airliners is like. His latest video covered the glide slope of an aircraft based upon math which I don't really understand. You are correct that it wouldn't just plummet to the ground. On a side note, I'm still salty about our state giving Boeing billions of dollars to stay and then they skedaddled as fast as they could. 😆
@Incognito-vc9wj
@Incognito-vc9wj 11 месяцев назад
Plummet to the ground? Lol, just stop. The plane still has wings and altitude. The engines on the embreaer can be restarted after those fire handles are pulled and even if they couldn’t be restarted, this plane can glide for over a 100 miles without engine power and they have an auxiliary power unit that would keep the electrics going
@michaelakadap924
@michaelakadap924 11 месяцев назад
Now there are planes out there without engines that will plummet from the sky, but most planes are built to glide a while. That being said you’re still losing thousands of feet. It really depends on who designed the plane and how well the plane is designed. Most planes if not, all are able to still fly perfectly with one engine. If you do lose both engines sometimes it’s impossible to get them up and running again, depending on how high you are. Because we all know that the higher you go the less oxygen there is and you really need that oxygen to restart an engine. Usually you have to go down pretty low before you’re able to restart the engines again. And that’s solely because there’s a certain level of oxygen you need to ignite the engines again. That being said, it’s a really bad idea to shut off all your engines.

As an aviation enthusiast from the Air Capital of the World (KICT), there is not a threat level higher than 4. 5 would be the smoking cloud left by the aircraft impacting an inanimate object. 4 is breached the cockpit and the safety and security of the flight crew and passengers are in imminent danger due to the threat. A threat level greater than 3 has only happened a handful of times since 2001, and in (almost, I'm sure there's an exception) all cases it's been an airline employee. As far as mechanics go, I was an in-house lawyer at Boeing when they were HQd in WA and am pretty familiar with their planes and procedures. Typical procedure for an engine fire involves multiple steps prior to pulling and twisting the relevant engine fire handle. One of the steps immediately prior is to shut off the fuel control switch. I am not certain if pulling and twisting the handle on its own would actually cut engine power which is possibly why he failed. As a pilot he would likely have been aware if this was possible via the handle alone but if it is not going to cut power I see the state having a hell of a time convincing a jury or judge that he intended to kill 83 others aboard the plane. Certainly he will have endangering an aircraft and other possible charges but if he was having a mental health crisis even those may be difficult to convict on because there's a mens rea aspect to those charges

He tried to pull the Engine Fire T-Handle which is used to secure the respective engine in the event of an engine fire by closing fuel/hydraulic valves, etc. pulling it will also arm the fire suppression system which is Halon but another button is needed to blow that into the engine. Just pulling the handle will shut the engine down and it is reversible given enough time and altitude. But depending on the phase of flight and with no engines the crew might not have had enough time to restart.

As a retired airline captain 👩‍✈️ I saw almost 0 (ZERO) illicit drug use during my 40+ years of professional flight. One exception was a brand new hire on his first trip to Sydney. Australia had rolled a joint and had it in his pocket… I happened to remark that a drug sniffing dog was about to board… And he panicked… True story. Now 🥃 is another story. PS when you turn the fire handle is when you deploy fire retardant agent to put out the fire in the engine. Just pulling the fire handle shuts off fuel & hydraulics … you could return the engine to normal flight if you push the fire handle back in… But not once you turned it and deployed, the fire retardant agent. FYI I also have one year of law school. (Dangerous) 😊 and in my opinion, this guy has a mental case that was isolated and is nowhere near being 83 criminal acts. It will be reduced to interference with a flight crew. However, I can guaran-fucking-TEE you. He will never fly in an airliner as crew EVER again.

I have never taken mushrooms, but I have read about it and considered it. The thing that every website and expert stresses that you need to for your first time at least is: 1) do it at a location that is both familiar and comfortable to you 2) do it with someone who can trip sit you to make sure you don't do freak out or commit crimes and 3) that you should be wary of taking it if you have mental health issues like anxiety or depression. As someone with anxiety I have still considered it despite rule 3, but I would never disregard the first two rules! There are people who have accidentally committed murder while on their very first magic mushroom trip, it's an incredibly dangerous thing to do when you're in an unfamiliar setting and with no sober person to watch after you!

That being said bad mental reactions are a known possibility so taking them before getting on a plane (even if not piloting) is pretty reckless in my opinion. It's not 83 counts of attempted murder reckless obviously but I do think there probably should be some consequence.

My ex called me and said there is a WALLLLLL OF RAINBOWS AND IT IS FLOWING LIKE A W A T E R F A L L !!!!!!! , my favorite was my wife who spent a large portion of the evening behind the couch talking the cat, she woke the next day and told me she was convinced she WAS a cat! Me, I just feel like my stomach needs to explode out one end or the other with little bits of peace and well being and a complete end of my obsession with death…. Not bad, I mean it changed my entire perspective on life but I just don’t get or respect people using them to party, I feel they put a person in a vulnerable situation and it really should be supervised. This pilot should lose his license because HE was the one who was supposed to be reliable and trustworthy, not in a million years is it ok for him to be excused for such actions. It doesn’t matter if he had a house and kids, I don’t care how “ normal” and “respectable” he WAS, WAS is the word. Had he brought down that jet because he was having a private party in the “ jump seat” oh hell no. I believe in decriminalized drugs , this fool should at least catch some felonies and do a year or so just for making mushrooms look bad.

He might not be a risk of flight but most certainly a risk for this flight! To me it seems like drugs causing the pilot's behaviour should be a mitigating/eliminating factor for the attempted murder charge, while taking drugs in the cockpit should be a aggravating factor for the drug offence. I'd say him losing his license would be reasonable and a strong punishment, but ideally he would have a chance to prove he can be trusted as a pilot again later on. // You and your son put so much effort into each video and you are a rare example of how to make good "reaction" content. You also have this genuine good and wise nature of a long-time father that is really comforting. Best wishes to you and your family from Germany.

As someone who has done a lot of mushrooms I dont think anyone should do it in a precarious position whatsoever. Always be safe and with people who can take care of you and if you feel like you have to do it then you should probably avoid them it should be a want not a need. Pro tips for the day

Great advice! I was always a buddy when people wanted to do psychedelics bc I always kept things fun light and interesting. This was in the early 2000s during the rave party days. Man, good times lol good times

I’m 90% sure mushrooms are, oof late, being marketed as a treatment for depression. THIS is exactly why I don’t agree with the “diy at home ketamine” kits I keep seeing, too.
