@@jamiedodger2361 I have a sudden need for fanart of that exact image. Care to clarify- is Vax giving a lap dance to death, or the other way around? Because either way, that's freaking amazing.

kind of like my session tonight when the DM (to the rogue) was like "and would you like to use your movement???"while he was standing next to what was basically a bomb...
I love as Vax is having his going-down speech everyone is looking sad and what not but Travis just has that massive grin of “oh yes, that’s the top notch Roleplay shit I signed up for.”
i have the feeling when Liam is done saying the thing Vax sees .. everyone is so sad and Travis is so tense like "OK Grog will kick ass like never before"
I've only just got to this episode (I actually watched the series before watching the CR stuff) and the animated show is amazing no doubt, but the passion and energy from the other players is something else. This has had 2 of my favourite moments overall so far (the aforementioned Vex scene and Liam going full blown tearjerker for his potential death) noticed the chat going nuts for both moments. Looking forward to the rest of these plus campaigns 2+3, I have a LOT to catch up on 😁
@@KatoLong Enjoy your journey! 🙂 As much as I enjoyed this campaign and watching things come together to form what Critical Role would become, and as much as I enjoy the production quality of C3 with all the legacy storytelling of a decade of prior shows to pull Easter eggs from... Campaign 2 is still hands down my favorite. Those characters are really something special to me and their adventures together were the easiest for me to get lost in. That whole second campaign was just a masterpiece. ✊ Hope you enjoy your journey through these stories... And welcome home new critter. ✌️💙

My favourite thing, aside from Taliesin's role playing in this episode and just my overwhelming love for Percy, is Marisha's face when Percy first yells, "SILAS!" Just the sheer eagerness.
I love how as soon as Liam role plays Vax's thoughts, everyone else gets their game faces on. Every party member knows two things...they're going to save Vax and the Briarwoods are on borrowed time.
Let’s just be real, as soon as No Mercy Percy mentioned anything about the Briarwoods all of Vox Machina realized there were at least two bodies soon to be in the ground by their hands. They didn’t even need him to explain what they did to him and Whitestone.

@@treckzx1504 because I didnt know the times when I found this and asked and I never bothered to find this comment again after I had watched it. I really appreciate the name calling though. Truly, it helps move our society forward.
The way Percy started naming his diceased family members. That was the most intense moment of roleplay I've seen yet. (Watching CR for the very first time!)
@Aidan Hall his creation of firearms and later the product that whitestone was taken for has so many ramifications. Hell, it inspired me to make a gunslinger-fighter/rogue-assassin. Imagine bad news with extra sneak attack damage that had say, assassinate on top to make it a critical.
@Aidan Hall I love Cad. Never really invested in Molly. But Percy is literally perfect, and in that light I now see Tali completely differently. He is so subtle and nuanced. My favourite player of viewer souls. Liam is the best actor. Sam the funniest. Laura the most entrancing. 'Mamma?!' with that lower-lip curl has me every time.
@@thomcrabb4237 spoiler: Maybe with a bit more time you would've. There was a lot to molly we never got to explore.(well kinda, but it would've been more interesting from a player perspective)
That Broker fight was hilarious. I love how everyone's like 'You picked the WRONG day to mess with us!' (especially Percy. Holy SHIT, Percy.) and is pulling out all their new shit in defence of this person they barely know, mostly because they've just had ENOUGH - while Vax is over there like *chucks dagger* 'Did I ever tell you guys how much I appreciate you? I should do that more often. I'm so glad I'm here with all of you.' *chucks another dagger* It's really entertaining relief after the stress of the first half - obviously the characters are still messed up, but the players (and DM tbh) seem to be on a post-emotion high and just having a bloody great time.
Had this feeling once before. Came back from college to my roleplaying group back home, not sure if they were still interested in the campaign I was running. Turns out they were. After one of the most intense cage matches ever(Jeez, I wonder where the inspiration came from), they ended the session with the Guardians of the Galaxy playlist blaring as they torched a cave of flesh eating birds not out of the good in them, but so they could get their own lair. I love them so much!
@@S_047 for in game reasons I would agree, but I guess they are doing it for "meta" reasons (not in a bad sense). She's a guest for one session only, it wouldn't be worth it to spend that time second guessing her character which is also related to someone they know.
Two things. One - Taliesin's voice as Percy is insanely attractive. Two - Whomever did the subtitles to denote Trinke's mood (Happy bear noises, sloppy bear noises, rolling bear noises) is a genius and deserves a lot of love. (Editing for a third - Matt's old-lady running at 3:12:03 is the funniest thing I've seen all week)
In the beginning, critters actually worked on the subtitles and did a fantastic job of it. If memory serves, they were also chat mods. CR now has an outside professional service, around 3+ years.
I love how in character Taliesen gets. While everyone else is yelling and celebrating after the HDYWTDT, he keeps a straight face and obliterates the broker.
Holy shit. This episode went to all the dark places. No Mercy Percy was in full effect, he pulled out THE MASK, Vax almost DIED, Kit was INCREDIBLE as Lilith. I’m so glad that I decided to watch this series after finishing Vox Machina on Prime. I’m forever in love with this group
42:02 “A small shiver runs down your spine, Vex: a feeling you haven’t felt before. A feeling of sudden and immediate sourceless dread, and in that instant you know that there is almost no time.”
Whenever Vex asks "where's Trinket?" I imagine him wearing a fedora and going on secret missions. EDIT: 31/12/2021 Since this is literally my most popular comment ever (no kidding, how the hell did this happen?), here's a little reward as a sign of my appreciation for all the future critters 1 2 3 4! Taliesin Jaffe (Percy) impresses me with every episode, if only because he understand his character in great detail and cares about his details. Thanks for the custom character build and the care.
Klaus Gaming I think Liam was concerned that that may have been the death of Vax, so him detailing his final thoughts was understandable, and everybody seemed to go with it. And then he shut up for the rest of the episode, basically.
@@fingman133 I think he was grinning at how good Liam was at making this a fantastic scene of role play. Just like when Liam sits and smiles at Matt for "doing this for 3 years and still blowing me away".
They are almost always so happy and jovial, but it is jarring how quickly the very air seems to get sucked out of the room whenever a PC goes down. They immediately go into serious panic mode and you can tell they are on the verge of sobbing. And then Liam stabs them in the heart with his dying imagery.

@@unfortunateimperial6019 Every book for 5e has a little joke comment on the first page, the one with all the credits. The page also explains the cover image, which I always thought was a cool little touch
I have to say Scanlan was probably one of the weaker characters early on. But as time went on he started to grow on me a little, I think these recent episodes have helped focus him on roleplaying the character to help push the game forward when it needs it and a bit less of being the clown who poos on peoples beds at every chance. And ofc Bards have some really strong control spells available to them which just helps push the "silly yet strong joker" idea.
@@musical._.savage7228 As someone who has also done such connections. It's really just coincidence that turns into something awesome. We see it as something done on purpose, but behind the screen. To quote the Traveller, "Everything's fucking chaos." It's really just a testament to how good Matt is at creating connections.
Gotta show Sam and Travis some love too.. both of them are easily the best comic relief. Liam is versatile and really nails the dramatic elements, Talesin hands down though remains the king of serious #NoMercyPercy
Jaffe is imo actually the best RPer, he never fails to act his character, he may not be as dramatic a character as Vax but Percy is complex and Jaffe has his complexity on lock
@@toryfox4580 I think what I love about him the most is that he doesn't care if Percy is acting good, evil, witty, or silent, Jaffe always acts in character, he doesn't care about impressing an audience.
@@toryfox4580 oh pls, percy constantly contradicts himself throughout this campaign, with what he says, the way he acts, and what he does... self contradiction is not complexity... its simply not being able to keep the story straight.
More to stop him meta-gaming with the endless decanter of water that he started charging as soon as he headed to the room, despite not knowing that Sylas was a vampire and that running water is a weakness of theirs
I don't think that's why he did it; Feeblemind is a great high-level spell for crippling casters, and having spent a dinner with Tiberious Delilah would know he wasn't the smartest person in the room. Blowing her 8th level spell to have a good chance of taking him out of the fight seems like a reasonable choice (as did spending her 7th level Finger of Death to try to kill Vex). It was a perfectly reasonable in-game decision from Matt. It also had the bonus effect of meaning he didn't have to explain to Orion why a water bottle wasn't going to defeat his high-level bosses.
@@TheGrumbledukei think the thing is that it would have defeated them, because running water cripples vampires. percy’s arc would have been over before it even started
5e rules on vampires and running water is that they take 20 acid damage if they end their turn in running water. Even overcharged and infinite, the canteen couldn’t have created a large enough running flow of water to engulf a medium sized creature. Even a regular, non-boss, vampire npc would find no trouble in the canteen.
If I were Percy after this whole fiasco, I'd be making a Hellboy Special- aka, bullets with glass tips containing holy water, clover leaves, white oak splinters, silver shavings, and garlic ("... The works").
Raptor052 Both would also be good, though even with the insane supernatural mumbo jumbo he has a pact with in his system, I doubt he'd have the strength to deal with the kickback of the latter. Something as powerful as the Jackal would outright obliterate his arm from the recoil alone, hence why it was made solely for someone of Alucard's strength level.
Five years later, Sam Riegel's enormous drinks become everything from a meme to a message of hope. This is how you *really* change the world, folks. Tell stories and have fun.
I imagine Matt one of these days just yelling "LET ME FINISH MY DESCRIPTIONS!" after someone tries to do something while he's describing what they see.
Atrum Angelus I think the only reason he doesn’t is because often, he takes them shouting out an action as responding in time and being able to take an action. But he does look visibly annoyed when the whole party starts going, as he swallows the rest of his description.
Ya, sometimes I really feel bad for matt, he sets up all theses things, like NPC's with plans, places, characters, and descriptions and then the party is just like nope and does something totally random, or just start taking actions before he can finish his descriptions.
I am kind of amazed that Matt didn't say that Vex's first two arrows were guided by Sarenrae (?). Two amazing rolls right after a faithless man prays.... She is definitely on Vax's side IG.
Bloodanna but Vex isn't really a follower of her and describing it as divine intervention would have kinda taken away from Vex' revenge and hope to save her brother. I think it's nice that he described this one coming from within.
First of all, Vax. Totally hit me with a sucker punch in the feels with that little speech. Liam: How dare you, and also, Vax, /how dare you/. Second, Mercer's old lady run is the funniest thing I've ever seen him do LMAO
One issue with doing that is you actually end up metagaming by trying not to metagame. You basically go too far and act like your character doesn’t know things that they actually would.
Shadowscall775 he asks the dm if his character knows something that they may not know, abandoning any advantage that it could give him. I think you got the definition of metagaming wrong
@@fofolacosa123 No, actually, I didn't. Metagaming is using knowledge outside of your character for good or bad. Yes, asking the DM kind of does eliminate most of the other one. But, I have seen cases where someone assumed they wouldn't know something (they were worried about an enemy with their weaknesses), but then later when we saw their background, they would have known them. The player was so concerned about metagaming that they ended up metagaming.
Agree completely. This is partly why Sam is my favorite player. He was literally the only one playing that right or questioning that they all might not know exactly where Vax was at that moment. But Vax is a solid #2 because even though that was a really dumb thing to do, his RP is top notch. That goodbye thought was amazing.
As annoyed as I have been with Orion, I don't feel like he metagames as much as people claim he does. K'varn fight was a perfect example. What kind of moron goes and fights a dangerous monster on their OWN turf?
@@godspeedhero3671 literally every other character in the game. I actually tend to agree with you that Orion's game play is judged way too harshly, but as a player myself, his objections to the beholder lair screamed metagaming to me. That is one of the few examples where I think the complaints are entirely justified... but that's just my perspective on it. I'm not in his brain.
@@godspeedhero3671 When they first learn it's a beholder he instantly goes "they're some seriously bad news!" and then later says "No matter what I'm not going in its liar!". He had not done any checks or anything so Tiberius had no way of knowing what a beholder or its abilities were or that it gained bonuses for being in its liar. He used out of game knowledge of a beholder. That shit was all 110% meta gaming.
Legit though Vampire Vax would have been the most OP unstoppable rogue ever. Not saying I'm sad he's okay, but imagine how much of an interesting dynamic it would have created for the party!
And it would put a lot of hindrances and stresses into the party, back to having the story restricted by one thing or another, and the 'I forgot it was daylight' incendiary moment
There is something to consider, though. Vax is a Rogue. A big part of their job is getting into where they don't belong. His intro specifically mentions him "inviting himself through your door." But vampires literally DO NOT get that option. 😂😂😂
He would have likely turned into a vampire spawn, not a full vampire. I don't remember everything about vampire spawn, but I don't think their will is their own.
Delilah Briarwood calling out to Percy, saying he's always welcome back home... sounds sooo chilling knowing that that's Grey DeLisle-Griffin (the voice of Azula) doing it in the animated series.
+iAmTheTot Technically the spell should have been immediately cancelled by the counterspell since both are the same level. There was no need for Matt to roll. Either he forgot it or he had a house rule because counter spell is a rather powerful spell that every mage should have. Although I do think it worked out better this way because it was way funnier.
This episode is awesome, but it breaks my heart. The entire second half of this episode I was getting more and more agitated because they kept joking around in the temple and Percy just sat there with a 1000 yard stare and a face of absolute defeat. Ffs, Vox Machina, your friend just confronted the people that murdered his entire family and first they got away and then he shot a helpless boy's fingers off in anger. He is clearly not feeling too great, so GO HUG HIM RIGHT NOW! Also, major props to Taliesin of course, he is as always an absolute delight to watch. He is one of the few that keeps me glued to the screen even when he doesn't say a word for 20 minutes, because he ALWAYS reacts to everything in character. In the temple scene and after, he didn't smile ONCE, not even when Scanlan shamelessly plugged Gilmore and everyone else was laughing. When everyone cheered and lost their shit at his HDYWDT with the Broker, he was the only one who didn't. And that's not because he's not enjoying the scene, but because in that situation, Percy would have absolutely nothing to smile about. That dedication to his character is definitely part of what makes Percy/Taliesin by far my favorite of the bunch.
Percy: *descending into an abyss of pure rage* VM: Do you guys hear something? Teifling who they've just met: I must leave! Do not trouble yourself with me! VM: First of all we will absolutely fight to the death for you right now and second of all come to dinner and tell us EVERYTHING.
I`ve been looking for comment like that, cause that`s exactly what I`ve been thinking during this video. He doesn`t try to drag attention, he`s almost hiding behind the table with "my world just broke again" face. Very indicative level of support from VM who are excited about fighting vampires. Hope Persy doesn`d drink himself to death in the next epidode.
can I just say I love Marisha and Laura and Taliesin being so emotionally invested but I also really love Travis and Sam, somber, but hiding smiles at just how goddamn good Liam is at this game and creating moments you can be so emotionally invested in
Holy shit. This is the best episode yet. And credit to Matt the Magnificent Mercer, he took Percy being a gunslinger fighter and made his worst enemies into vampires. He practically turned him into Van Helsing. What a fucking amazing DM.
"Matt's like, damn you and your counterspell, you're ruining my plans" Tidings, tidings of what is to come, far in their future but in their future nonetheless.
I got into this show by watching clips before actually watching it, vod or live. Let's just say I saw the 'nine' thing before I saw any other part.. Knowing what happens... your comment makes me sad. :(
He's said since that he used to find the emotional moments in these earlier episodes really awkward, he only really came around after his own arc later on.
That's an awesome RP feat, Grog haggling up, was good but it meant no real harm, but this one was on another level, even if the group was clearly superior to the enemy, her dome (however it's called) was being really helpful, so, yeah, amazing moment.
i'm fucking crying at this point. for percy to just suddenly list off his family's names was heartbreaking. (i just hit the break time while i'm typing this)
this episode left me on the floor percy's journey through truma, vax realizing his feelings for keyleth, vex desperate running for her brother, scatlan and grog acting the biggest demonstrations of blind loyalty to their friends WOW
So many good moments in this episode. Vax's soliloquy, Vex's double natural twenty's against lady briarwood, Percy vs the broker, etc. Such a good episode
Yeah its even better because she's been doing it constantly even in this episode and a lot more through the campaign hahaha she got him even though she did it with him like 2 shows ago! What a smart sassy woman to push blame on a guy and take no responsibility ;)
They also blew the “your soul is forfeit” line way too early. Since it was originally against someone not related to the Briarwoods arc, they could’ve used it anywhere.
Actually he realized it before: you dont gonna full on swan dive into a pool of lava (after you already almost died in one) just for anyone and he did for her..
You've never watched before the episodes start and multiple times during the show where he speaks normally? Do you ignore anything that isn't fantasy English in these videos?
Dunno if you noticed, but since the rakshasa "Tiberius BS" episode, everytime Orion take any action, matt fullproof it. Matt note all the spell lvl's Orion use, check all Orion spells on the player handbook and reprimand him on every metagaming attempts. [O:"i ask my dragon to ask for me" M:"no you can't, you can convey feelings"] [O:"i cast fly 4th level on the party" M:"as you do you start plummeting" O:"But..." M:"Concentration spell, 4 people max, end previous spell"] [O:"i make my portal" M:"you used all spell slots"]
I skipped most of trials of the take 3 and 4 (dont get me wrong i love critical role and the guest stars were great but i had a feeling orion was gonna pull some shit) i looked for the timestamp for the kiss tho so u could scream about it xD
I fucking love that shit. I will say, to his credit, he seems to have mellowed somewhat this episode. 'Ok I have my INT back, lets focus on Vax now'. Like... Good boy. But then he can't resist butting into everything, metagaming, scowling at the camera when he doesn't get his way... It's so godawful
23:10 Matt: "No, I'll give inspiration when you've goddamn earned it." 40:02 Vax's 'Critical' monologue 41:39 Matt: "Go ahead and make a wisdom saving throw." Liam goddamn earned it.
I know Kit's known for her amazing art rather than theatrical skills, but she was so easily able to match the rest of the cast for acting, and she's freaking gorgeous, body and soul!
Her casual rebuff of Tiberius hitting on her was hilarious, it was really cool having her play, her art is so amazing and it always caught the feel of the story
2:29:32 - "He didn't even look down, he just said it." I will always always ALWAYS love it when one or more of them have to take a second to just be in awe of Matt's freakish and hard earned abilities
this episode is just giving me SUCH princess bride vibes and i love it, percy yelling SYLAS had me going “my name is indigo montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die” and when vax sais we are very strong and full of health and then just dropped i was like WESLEY
I wanna see grog with full plate armour and just he and trinket rolling down a hill toward some giant monster, the bear growl and Goliath scream echoing throughout the area how badass would that be
Percy: "can't you see there is NOTHING here for you?! Leave while you are still alive! Also Percy: immediately blows a baseball sized hole in the same dudes chest before he can actually flee"
