okay okay okay like this took me a while to edit and put together even though it is one of the best running jokes but-- (Corrections: 6:24 - 6:52 Dairon should say Ep77, not Ep74 30:04 - 31:41 should be 'To: Essek (EP131)', not Yeza)
Personal headcanon is that for Jester it's not exactly 25 words, it's *roughly* 25 words and Travis is playing the Traveller trying to keep up with her during these moments. When Travis miscounts or gets it wrong, no he didn't, the Traveller just lost count and was like "that sounds about right".
The one where he sort of goes “Oh shit!” and has to catch up on like 10 words and completely miscounts. In that moment, I imagine he reacted like Odin/Loki in Thor Ragnarok, just setting down a cocktail and completely screwing up the word count.
My headcanon is that jester is like a kid with a bike who doesn't know how to brake. She literally doesn't know how to end sending, she just talks until the spell ends itself.
@@samuelwright7496 I prefer to think The Traveler lied to her and said she has to use all 25 words or the spell doesn't go through. He's Exandrian Loki. Fucking with Jester seems on brand for him.
the absolute chaos the traveller caused by giving jester the ability to essentially be one of the few people on the continent with access to a telephone that you *have* to pick up when it calls
@@doomerbloomer6160 sending is a third level spell, depending on the lore and the average creature cr (ignoring players) and average npc wizard in volos is 1/4 cr then its easy to assume that very few actually would have access to sending, even amongs adventurers
@@someguyontheinternet1093 CR is just a general measure of how threatening an enemy would be to fight to a party of 4 players (and a pretty shitty one at that). An npc wizard with 3rd level spells isn't automatically a high CR enemy.
$5 says he shattered SO much dishware being startled by her Messages. "HI ESSEK!" *Teacup shatters* "HELLO ESSEK!" *Soup bowl goes flying* "ESSEK, IT'S JESTER!" *Plate that he almost had back in the cupboard drops to the floor and cracks in half*
@@TeroTheShortOne Jester once asked him if he was doing anything embarrassing when she messaged him. She rolled high insight and got a whisper, which made Laura laugh. I really wonder if it what happened was something like this.
The best comment I’ve seen on Laura’s Sendings is that the spirit of Jester temporarily possesses her whenever she casts the spell. Why she’s so surprised with what comes out of her mouth
I like to imagine all the laughter being in character. Just Jester trying to message someone and the whole Mighty Nine just losing their shit every time.
Yeah in universe I assume jester doesn't see it as her being funny It's just her personality And when Matt tells her she doesn't need to use every word It's arty
Truly the best moments, I would add 22:40 "we been doing things, creepy shit" to Cornelius Edit : Duh donuts 6:35 Hey dad 8:10 Bonus duhduhduh to Oban : 5:03
A couple of times early-mid campaign Nott starts trying to dictate messages to make them more efficient and it's hard to tell if it was Jester glaring at Nott or Laura glaring at Sam that put a stop to it
Astrid's message at episode 131 is truly peak Jester sending. The entire cast broke. Matt was the one pleading for mercy. Taliesin cackling like a madman. Liam and Marisha on the verge of tears, wheezing. Truly a scene worthy of a Renaissance painting.
Real talk for a moment: The ways Laura used sending actually changed the way that the spell was used for regular players. People realized the weaponized capability of the spell. It could be used to harass an NPC and even prevent them resting. It could force the DM to find ways to block its usage or deal with the interruption it causes. All it took was some thinking outside the norm.
its also a good argument on why real life magic would be horrifying- aside from instant healing, imagine getting spam messaging about fucking car warranty while sleeping or something
Fewer than you might think, at least for us vets/OG players. Sending was easily the most commonly-banned spell I've ever run into as a player, and I was personally responsible for that at two tables. But, that was OD&D when a high enough level caster could prep and cast it nine times a day, especially on DT when you had nothing else to prep. One of the tables I played at in college already had it banned.
I like to imagine that even long after the group retires, Jester prank Sends everyone in the party from time to time, usually at the worst possible times.
God my favorite message jester ever sent was the one to Astrid 131, it was everything that makes Jester great plus the utter fucking comedy gold of Astrid’s response is just “…I am so very… confused………. W-what did you say?!” Just 11/10 complete chaos, net zero information. Beautiful. Effervescent. Perfect.
In the context of the episode it was even funnier to me personally. It had been a really stressful couple of days for the M9, and everybody just absolutely loosing it definitely released some of the tension.
Forever this spell has been changed for people playing the game. Me being DM realizing the amount of messed up villains that could just send random words or sounds to distract the party or make them slowly go insane. HEH HEH HEH
I ran a campaign where the BBEG was a kobold with Ambitions far beyond the oldest dragon. Sending, dream, and illusions allowed them to end the world. (Almost ended it twice, but the party decided to do it first the second time.)
I'm imagining Essek hearing that "you float really good" song at the end of the message, and thinking "You know what? I do! I DO float really good!" and that's enough to make him respond.
@@robmc120 generally speaking Travis was pretty spot on throughout the campaign. I think there were a few instances where a syllable was counted as an extra word or where a jester fused multiple words into 1 long blob. But it’s pretty spot in.
It seems like it was almost alwaya little off to me. usually negligible, but at one point one of them counts "we need to talk to the bride queen are you aound" as 5 words. idk if it's just because she said it really fast but still there's absolutley no way.
I believe Sending is supposed to convey intent as well as words, so technically _(TecHnIcAlly)_ a person can't be confused by the contents of a Sending. However, people can be confused by Jester's sendings because even she doesn't know what she intended to say sometimes. I love how, by the end, Matt turned around and weaponized Sending against the Nein (with Trent & Caleb)
TBF they are being generous by counting conjunctions as one word when grammatically and technically, they are considered two words. Like "It's" would count for two words technically.
It baffles me how ANYBODY managed to abuse the sending spell. It's a simple utility spell it wasn't made for this! XD Only Laura/Jester could, I love it!
@@saikanji9570 I think people usually used it to communicate with party members if it was split or employers? I think what they mean is that no one has turned it into a joke like this. 😂
27:26 "It's me, Jester. Hey, I don't know if you're alone. If you're not and you're following us, then clear your throat if you're not following us." Might be the greatest message ever sent in DnD.
For me it's the fun part in watching those: realizing how Laura acts her characters to the limit. Like "smart, collected Imogen who doesn't have time for BS" and "totally chaotic Jester just letting words coming out of her mouth hoping they make sense"... Love it, and love the dedication to the characters. LOL
I can imagine Jester inventing text speech and abbreviations because of this to cut down on words until she could turn entire paragraphs into 25 words.
Laura: “This is possibly my father guys, I have to sound kewl… Ok, I’m going to send a message to the Gentleman, he’s always really happy to hear from me… *ahem* … Hi daaaad!” Everyone: **internally facepalms**
I really appreciate the references Some of my favourite moments are when Laura totally forgets what she was going to say just as jester casts the spell lol
Jester is attention deficit impulsive type personified, I can feel the train of thought evaporating right as she finishes starting the cast in my very soul
The psychic damage i have inflicted by knocking on my sisters door and asking what she’s doing and not hearing an answer and asking in the sweetest gentlest Romanian accent “Are you pooping?”
"also, mom's name?" is my favourite what was my mother's name reference in all of critical role, solely bc she didnt actually have the words to say it properly
my favorite thing is the moments when laura seems surprised by the words coming out of her own mouth, like jester has just fully possessed her and she has no control
I fully believe that Jester is just Laura's stream of consciousness turned into a character. Specifically the part that laughs at every unintentional innuendo. XD
The donut sending is peak Jester, and by far my favorite because it shows Laura coming out of her Jester-trance in time to hear the end of it and laugh hard about it.
Jester turned message into a weapon I picture her sending message to random people she's meet once heck even people she saw one time. "HEEEEEY HAT MAN......I really LIKE your hat do do do do...." Like a year after she saw him
I didn't think anything could replace the absolute joy of what was going to happen when Jester casts sending, but with Campaign 3 Laudna I have to say is giving her a run. So excited to see if they keep that shtick up, I think they will it's just so perfect lol
@@Direwolf181 Oh right, but I thought warlocks did. But then I doublechecked and its WIZARDS that can get it. Creepy Laudna Sendings would have been hilarious. T_T
At the start of the campaign I mentioned that I defenitely needed to see a "Jester message supercut" and I would like to thank you for this gift of pure delight.
