CRIMSON TIDE (1995) | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION 

It might be easy to see him as being overshadowed by the two leads, but Viggo Mortensen's performance in this film was the role that got him noticed by Peter Jackson's casting director who decided, "I've found our Aragorn."

Enemy of the State with Gene Hackman and Will Smith is a superb thriller and a window into the world we live in now.

Hans Zimmers score for this is so underrated. It really helps drive the action, the suspense and the mood of the whole film from beginning to end.

The boarding scene in this movie is RIDICULOUSLY iconic. With the rain pouring down, and Gene Hackman spraying testosterone everywhere, and the men shouting "GO BAMA! ROLL TIDE!" and then the bugle, it's just perfect.

Gene Hackman is a LEGEND in Hollywood. He's starred in like a hundred films. In fact Denzel said he was "intimidated" acting along side of him. Of course Denzel's performance in this film was nothing short of PERFECT! Thanks to both of you for another great reaction! I saw this in the theaters. I can't believe it was almost 30 years ago!

This really happened in 1962. During the Cuban missile crisis a Soviet sub, out of contact with Moscow nearly fired its tactical nuclear weapons at the US. Vasily Arkhipov, the lone dissenting officer on the B-59 is credited with saving the world from nuclear anilihation

Both Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington can bring intensity like no one else.

We can’t talk about Gene Hackman without mentioning his iconic performance in The French Connection.

You two only realising Weps was Aragorn at the end was hilarious - it just shows you how much context matters for recognising people. Viggo, Denzel and Gene are outstanding in this, three really charismatic actors facing off with no-one as an outright villain, only a check to each other. I watched this movie over and over in University dorm parties, it's really well written and it holds up to repeat viewings even when you know the ending.

I was a sonar technician in the United States Navy in the early 1980s. The height of the cold war. In fact, I read the book "Hunt for Red October" (before it was a movie) while attending sonar "C" school. This movie was surreal to me. It isn't often that Hollywood depicts this much believability for those that have experienced this environment. Some of it was a little exaggerated, like the kitchen fire reflash, or the dog lifting its leg in the corridor, or the avoidance of multiple homing torpedoes (your countermeasures can probably only avoid one if you are lucky). Russian subs were noisy and easier to find in that snapshot of time as well. But all in all, much more believable than most Hollywood depictions. It was for the most part, very believable.

Hi Cassie and Carly! Thank you for watching one of my favorite movies from the 90s. The title refers to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The intercollegiate athletic varsity teams that play for the University of Alabama. It’s fitting given that this story takes place aboard the USS Alabama, which is still in service with the US Navy to this day. The name comes from a Birmingham sports editor named Hugh Roberts who described a football game between Alabama and Auburn in 1907. Birmingham’s iron-rich soil turned to a sea of red mud which stained Alabama’s white jerseys. He said the team played like a “Crimson Tide.” While the story of this movie is fictional, it was inspired by real-life events. At the time Russia was experiencing a lot of political, social, and economic turmoil following the collapse of the Soviet Union. When Crimson Tide came out in 1995, Russia was fighting to put down a rebellion in Chechnya. As shown in the news footage, the First Chechen War (1994-1996) resulted in appalling casualties for both sides. What this movie depicts is a fictional Civil War in Russia as a result of the events at that time. The movie also utilizes some combat footage from Operation Desert Storm. The situation on the USS Alabama closely parallels a real-life incident that occurred aboard the Soviet submarine B-59 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The captain of the B-59 believed that his submarine was under attack by US Naval vessels and wanted to launch a nuclear torpedo in response. They were unaware that the Americans were dropping non-lethal depth charges with small explosives of the type used for training purposes in order to force the submarine to surface without causing any significant damage. Unfortunately messages from the US Navy to communicate this never reached the B-59 or Soviet Naval HQ. The B-59 had been out of contact with Moscow for days while in the Caribbean, so the crew onboard were unsure whether or not war had broken out. Thankfully one of the senior officers onboard named Vasily Arkhipov refused to sanction the launch of a nuclear weapon. He eventually calmed the captain down and convinced him to surface and await orders from Moscow. Vasily Arkhipov is widely regarded as a hero for preventing a nuclear war. (11:33) A submarine like the USS Alabama has a crew of 15 officers and 140 enlisted men. (13:07) US Navy submarines have special machines onboard that make oxygen from ocean water through a process called Electrolysis. They also have distillation machines that produce fresh water from ocean water. This allows the crew to live underwater for months. (28:56) Dear Carly, if you are talking about the Russian Akula submarine that attacked them, it was destroyed. You can see the submarine explode and break apart at 26:37 when it took a direct hit from the Americans torpedo. For your next submarine movie you two have to see Das Boot (1981).

CrimsonTide is one of Denzel's best movies. One of his best performances.

A film score so iconic, every Hans Zimmer score since had just been a variation of it.

The dynamic between Hackman and Washington is amazing.------ The clash of ideaologies started at that first dinner scene. I love the setup that Ramsey was someone who only needed to "know how to push the button ... they'll tell me when." Hunter wanted to know why, so they would not push the button for the wrong reasons. --------- He's constantly evaluating the situation and looking at the big picture on the consequences of their actions/non-actions. ------ It really establishes the unstoppable force meet the immovable object dynamic that carries through the rest of the film.

Tony Scott is such an amazing director. Excellent at building tension, and showing tense awkward moments.

Don't recall the two of you so completely immersed and stressed when watching a film together. Love the film. Love the reaction. Love Carly.

The thing I love about this movie is how they end with mutual respect. A lesser story would end with them holding grudges or one of them dying, or going to prison, etc. The fact that they don't do any of that is what makes it great.

The suspense you guys felt is exactly what I felt the first time I watched this movie. Strike that , THIS MASTERPIECE. If anyone had told me a couple of years ago that I would be watching someone watch movies, I would have laughed at them. Now, I realize this is the closest thing to being able to see a movie for the first time again. Thank you for providing this experience without the over the top, ridiculous behavior that some reactors use.

If you like these submarine-movies, may I suggest Das Boot (if you haven't seen it all ready). It's a german movie in german language, though, so you need subtitles. But it is often considered as one of the greatest war movies ever made. And it is based on a novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim on his own experiences onboard a german U-Boat during WW2.

If you're looking for a Denzel movie to watch, he won an Oscar for Training Day

The writer of this movie taught one of my screenwriting courses in film school, he’s an awesome guy. He wound up meeting me over meals outside of class and became a bit of a mentor to me. I’m grateful. He was proud of this movie and I don’t blame him! Colors and Lean On Me are also good! Colors is a classic.

You two have no idea how happy I am you liked this movie. It's a classic, and you'd be hard put to find a better set of actors at just the absolute top of their game. Great flick, I saw it in the theater with my dad, and we we're absolutely rivetted and then had one of those Father-Son conversations afterwards about power and responsibility.

Das Boot is a natural follow-up as another suspenseful submarine movie.

Those are two serious actors. Some of the best ever ever. And supporting cast Viggo and even Rick Schroder's brief scenes. Strong.

I joined the navy and volunteered for submarine service almost exclusively because of this movie 😅. It's not at all accurate but still holds a good place in my heart

Real life Denzel - Cold War Russian submarine commander Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov , 30 January 1926 - 19 August 1998) was a Soviet Naval officer who prevented a Soviet nuclear torpedo launch on the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I always hated that bit about Lipizaner horses being either from Portugal or Spain when they are actually from Lipica, Slovenia where they also get their name from.

I saw this movie just after I left the US Navy, and was fortunate enough to see it in Alabama. The audience in the theater absolutely exploded when the Captain and Chief of the Boat did their speech before boarding the boat. "Go 'Bama!" "ROLL TIDE!!!" *audience goes NUTS*

I think Mississippi Burning is Hackman's best picture. Very suspenseful and a true story about a civil rights conflict from the 60s.

Looks like you gals really enjoy Tony Scott's films (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide). Hence, definitely continue to explore his filmography: True Romance, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, etc... For another great suspense movie, check out Bound (1996) starring Jennifer Tilly & Gina Gershon.

As a former serviceman, I know Hollywood movies take A LOT of artistic liberties with military life. I WILL SAY what gives me what i can only describe as flashbacks is military movies with great comms chatter. War Games, Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide. THAT immerses me into the movie.

I love this movie, a superb “peace time” military film. This was also one of Quentin Tarantino’s first projects. He wasn’t the original writer of the script, but he was called on by Tony Scott to “finesse the script” a bit, because Tony had directed Quentin’s first script “True Romance”. Another great movie for you. The Quentin Dialogue is the silver surfer stuff, the Star Trek content, and the Spanish horses dialogue while they were waiting for the communication to come through about the launch.

To be fair, Viggo Mortensen is one of those actors that changes his "look" from movie to movie, so its hard to recognize him sometimes. And he plays a wide array of characters in varying genres.

There are 134-221 crew members on our sub fleet. Typically 134-150 was the standard crew + officers (15-20 typically) size of Ohio class subs. Last year, we had a sub with a crew of 221 put to port. It's the largest in our fleet at 561 feet long.

Two very good Viggo Mortensen (weaps) movies to consider. "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises". One of his older movies that I really like is "The Indian Runner".

People tend to forget this movie also features James Gandolfini before he was Tony Soprano.

I was an Interior Communications Technician in the Navy in the 80s and I love this movie. I was not on a sub but we fixed radios and amplifiers along with all other equipment. We would have 2 or 3 replacements at the ready in electrostatic bags if something failed. Can’t tell you how many times we just took the failed equipment out and just swapped it out took minutes to restore comms. While underway we are just testing everything and repairing even if not broke. Still a good movie but rest assure the Navy is prepared.

Actually they're both wrong. The Lipizaner horses ( Lipicanci ) come from a country called Slovenia. They're raised in a place called Lipica ( same name origin as the horses ). And yes, they are black when born, and turn white as they grow into adulthood. They are absolutely not Spanish horses.

"John Q" Love your reactions, PIB. This is another Denzel film, although very underrated (probably by critics & viewers who are not parents). Very intense and very real-world (based partly on a true story) take on the failings of privatized health care in the USA.

Lt. Hellerman, who was ordered by Hunter to seal the hatch, was played by Ricky Schroeder. Ricky was an award winning 9-year-old actor in the 1979 drama "The Champ".

I loved Gene Hackmen's character in this. He's the perfect example of a guy who's been in the game too long and now his ego is getting in the way. And he does it soooo well. This movie was actually inspired US navy report that found that no one individual on a missle sub should be able to launch because it had potential to create an absolute worst case scenario and this movie really showed how this could, in fact actually happen. I live in area (Hampton Roads VA) w/ a lot of current & former Navy personnel. My submariner friends consider Crimson Tide (& for that matter Red October as well) a comedy. They all say you want to see a real submarine movie, Das Boot is by far the best one ever made.

During the Cuban Missle Crisis in October 1962, Soviet submarine B-59, carrying Hiroshma equivalent nuclear tipped torpedoes, that were unknown to US military forces, was submerged near Cuba. 11 US destroyers accompanying the aircraft carrier USS Randolph were sailing in the area and detected the sub and dropped signaling (non-destructive) depth charges on the it in an attempt to force it to the surface. Captain Valentin Savitsky of the B-59 had been out of radio contact with the USSR command for days due to their depth. Presuming a war had broken out between the two super powers, the captain and political officer both approved the launch of the nuclear torpedo. Normally, this would have been enough to authorize the firing. However, Visily Arkhipov, Commodore of the Soviet submarine fleet, who was also serving as the boat’s executive officer, overruled the command. A heated argument between Captain Savitsky and Arkhipov ensued. Had the torpedo been fired and struck an American vessel, it surely would have led to a massive nuclear exchange. Upon the sub’s return, the captain and crew were excoriated by USSR naval high command. Arkhipov was later called the man who saved the world. It’s seriously time for you two to see Gene Hackman’s greatest film The French Connection (1971) and Denzel Washington’s finest portrayal as the titular character in Spike Lee’s masterpiece, Malcolm X (1992).

Another excellent Gene Hackman-led thriller is The Conversation. It was one of many “paranoia” thrillers of the 70s like Blowout and The Paralax View, all three great films.

The beginning of a great collaborative history between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. They would do 5 movies together before Tony passed and I enjoy all of them. Crimson Tide, Man on Fire 2004, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123 2009, and Unstoppable.

Crimson Tide is a heart pounder for sure... GREAT movie with two of my FAVORITE actors... and a FANTASTIC supporting cast!

Gene Hackman was the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein, and also Lex Luthor in Superman 1978. Those are two where you would recognize him. One that hasn't been on the channel that you might enjoy is called Heist from 2001.

This movie had me gripped from start to finish and had me wide awake that night thinking about it. Never before have i seen a film with tension like it! Absolutely brilliant! I have now seen this film 5 times and it still overwhelms me! Great reaction popcorn in bed...keep em' coming!

The movie takes place aboard the uss alabama. The football team of the University of Alabama is known as the Crimson Tide for the color of their uniforms. A phrase often used at their games is "Roll Tide!"

The thing I love about this movie that most people overlook is the score. Its fantastic and so powerful even without the visuals of the film.

Very intense movie with perfect casting! Cool seeing your reaction to such a classic. This movie does such a great job of telling both sides of a story (old vs new) ways of thinking and how the weight of responsibility crush most morals when lives are at stake.

Another great and suspenseful submarine movie is "Das Boot". I can highly recommend it. It is very long but it is up there in my top submarine movie list. Also, it is interesting to watch a war movie from the German's perspective.

That was James Galdolfini, the actor who played Tony Soprano in The Sopranos, on the bus who ordered the sailor to "drop down and give me 20". The song being sung as the submarine dives is "Eternal Father, Strong To Save", it is also called The Navy Hymn. I recommend "Run Silent, Run Deep." It's an old submarine war movie but a classic.

My brother and uncle were both history majors and teachers, so at around 6:15 when you said movie was based on real events, I kinda lost it laughing. It's a good reminder that just because your well versed in a certain area(s), does not mean others are. That said.....BRING HISTORY BACK!
