Those are some great recommendations, Dave. I mentioned your channel on my video. I own and like Being There, but Peter Sellers is also great in Dr Strangelove. I own a couple others from this video and the rest are on my Wishlist.
Great list...I have several on there and added a few to my 'wishlist'. Also, some one mentioned it below, 'Spirit of the Beehive' is one of my favorite films that happens to be from the 1970's. I think Criterion only has DVD though.
I received my Criterion Channel coupon as well, so was hopeful the sales was coming soon. I have checked out The Friends of Eddie Coyle before, so might have to grab that one. I know it is not in the 70's, but I was also looking at picking up the 4Ks of Blow Out and Branded to Kill.
Great list! Eraserhead, House and Fantastic Planet are some of my faves not mentioned My fave Criterion and fave film overall is Mulholland Drive from 2001
If you haven't seen the January 2024 Criterion announcements, there is a Chantal Ackerman box set coming out. Since I've gotten a few criterion films recently, I think the 2 movies left that I am getting before the end of the year are Thief and 1984. Not quite 70s, but good stuff.
I bought and watched Stalker after reading the book it was based on, Roadside Picnic, and really enjoyed it. It does differ from the book in several ways, but both are great. I have also picked up and watched Solaris, Mirror, and Ivan’s Childhood. I recently bought Andre Rublev, but I have not watched it yet.
Hey Dave and another great video of recommendations. You nailed it with your prediction of the Tuesday sale. I've always thought The Rose deserved a little more stacked release. It's such an amazing movie but the release feels light. Still a fantastic addition to any collection though. Badlands and The In-laws are so great. I have The Friends Of Eddie Coyle so that just went to the top of my watch list. 😀I can't wait for the Ackerman Collection set, and what great timing for you to talk about her films. So many choices and next up, the November sale. I hope you were able to grab a few things on your wish list and thanks so much for this helpful video. You're the best. Chat soon, my friend. 👻🎃🥸🚶♂️🚶♂️
Thanks Stephanie. I can't believe I got the sale date right this time around, was thinking it might be 10/24 too. The email with coupon is an indicator plus the January 2024 release announcement on Monday instead of Tuesday. Totally agree about The Rose, always prefer as many extras as possible. I am super excited about the Ackerman Collection which is the most I've been excited about a new Criterion release in awhile. Will be a good upgrade from the Eclipse set that I have with her films from the 1970s. She is a genius in my humble opinion. Talk to you soon my good friend. 🎃👻🥸😀
I have most of the movies you mention and will ponder the ones I don't. Most that I don't actually have from Criterion I have from other distributors. Hmm . . . . I am a huge fan of Tarkovsky. Very sad that he died at a fairly young age and only directed about, um, 7 feature films and 3 (?) short films, I think. Stalker is certainly my favorite. I've also watched McCabe and Mrs. Miller quite a few times. Being There is indeed excellent. I've watched it many times. I've watched numerous Peter Sellers films numerous times, I think especially Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Your recommendations are always really appreciated Dave. I liked the theme of 70s movies. I’ve only seen Being There (based on your past recommendation) and The In-Laws. So this list gives me so many more to explore. All The President’s Men on Criterion would be amazing. You must be pretty excited for the Chantal Akerman set announcement. I loved your series discussing Tarkovsky films. A 70s movie in the collection that I discovered recently and really enjoyed is Christ Stopped at Eboli. I also caught The Ruling Class on the channel and would like to pick it up in the future because I thought it both interesting and hilarious.
Thanks so much! I am very excited about the Ackerman set announcement. I have the Eclipse set with those films so this will be a great upgrade. Thanks for your recommendations too, most appreciated.
Just received the email, "Great news! Our 24-hour Flash Sale starts tomorrow, October 17th at noon ET! All in-stock discs will be 50% off SRP (excluding pre-orders)."
You got me with Two-Lane Blacktop. I’m picking up The Spirit of the Beehive, The Wages of Fear, Freaks, EO, The Trial and Two-Lane Blacktop. Thanks Dave!
Hi Dave, I really appreciate your YT channel. For the most part, and probably because we must have the same age, we share the same tastes. Especially when it comes to the seventies. I'm a huge fan of Alan Rudolph, from Welcome to L.A up to Love at large. What do you think about this very underrated director ? Daniel, from France.
Thanks so much for your comment and kind words. I'm not too familiar with Alan Rudolph but have wanted to see Welcome to L.A. for a long time. I do own and like his film Songwriter (1984). Will definitely be seeking out more of his films.
Lots of great films here, Dave. Thanks for the recommendations. It appears that Criterion's release date for Malick's "Days of Heaven" has been pushed out to December, so I'll probably try to pre-order it during the flash sale. I'm not sure if Barnes & Noble gives the 50% off on pre-orders (although they might).
