Personally, I think Sun Tzu's sneaking around wasn't meant to be Timothy De La Ghetto being funny, rather Sun Tzu demonstrating his principle of scouting the enemy as stated in "The Art of War".

Awesome play with words. Let me be honest. Frank -> Voltaires name is Francois, so yeah...dont start beef with me. Voltaire was a buddy of Benjamin Franklin. This line is self explanatory.
@ValD98
@ValD98 7 лет назад
Actually the "don't start beef with the frank" is referring to Voltaire being French. France was comprised mostly of the Germanic ethnicity of Franks during the Middle ages, so that's what they can be referred to. The French even have a saying that goes "We are Frank by nation and frank by nature." or smth. of the sort.

Valeria Daneva I know the history, they did call themselves Franks, yes, but why would it mean that...dont start beef with the frankish people ? Dont start beef with me has more sence imo, it probably does but its worded to mean Frank.

I thought that the ''get out the way'' line was made to reference Dao'ism (as Dao/T'ao means ''the way'', or ''the path''), though I can understand how that could seem less obvious to people who aren't knowledgeable on Lao-Tzu's work.

The "I'll not be taught camaraderie from a frog who rigged the lottery. You make a mockery of ethics, so keep your fat nose in your coffee" line is EVEN better than you presented it to be. Not only is "mocking ethics" a perfectly derogating way of describing Voltaire's work, and "fat nose" mocking the facial features of a person that is so vain and precious, but Voltaire is also reported to have drunk over 50 small cups of coffee each day. While you drink coffee (or "keep your fat nose" in it) you can't rap and need to shut up.
@Mat4yo
@Mat4yo 9 лет назад
Frannts bruh Yes, I knew this, but I tried to avoid explaining lines that were somewhat self explanatory in this video, as I stated I wanted to focus on the portrayal and decisions. Socrates literally said "fat nose in your coffee", and there's no way that's an irrelevant line - but calling him a "frog" isn't as obvious of a reference. Thanks for watching!

Just one thing about the "A bowl is most useful when it is empty" quote. This is explained in a book called The Tao of Pooh (a fantastic reference that I was genuinely surprised to see - it's a book from the 80s that explains taoist philosophy using the characters of Winnie the Pooh) as being a really simple concept - if you have an empty bowl, you can put something into it. If there's already something in the bowl, you usually can't.

Amazing analysis. I just have one remark that you didn't mention which kinda joins your claim that Voltaire's character wasn't put forward enough (or sth like that). Since I'm french, I've studied a lot of Voltaire texts, and THE typical characteristic/thematic proper to them was irony, which I didn't find at all in his lines of the battle, which kinda saddens me. He was a very cynical, even mean person (he ruined the life of his rival, Rousseau, to a point where he had to make a book called "the confessions" or something like that). Maybe he could have been a bit more sarcastic when telling Socrates and Neitzsche to work together. Also, the french stereotypes like the accents are not my favourite things, so I'm glad they were toned down in the battle.

Maybe I'm missing something, but when you say the "driven" reference is _only_ about the driving company, it makes me think you don't know that "driven" is also a personality trait, ie highly focused and ambitious. "Someone who is driven is so determined to achieve something or be successful that all of their behaviour is directed towards this aim" (Cambridge dictionary)

I knew all of these philosophers before I watched this rap battle. I have always loved history and been blessed with history teachers who shared my passion and therefore taught me well. Keep in mind I couldn't freestyle if there was a gun to my head... I greatly admire lyricists for this reason. I retain info in a weird way.. I can remember many things, but can't use it to spit a rap, just write a paper. This battle was a real treat for someone like me who can pick up on ancient and modern references just watching it. I like how they ALL fought with each other- their philosophies would've clashed, even within their own teams. I didn't like the "you can all hold these fortune cookies!" Line myself. I thought the ones with deeper meanings into philosophy just did a better job making a point.

I saw the "A bowl is more useful when it is empty" line as meaning that "Look at this opportunity we have, and all that we could do with it," while Sun Tzu wants to seize the moment, Lao wanted to think things through more, and what else can we do with this 'open bowl', as Sun wants to 'fill it' with whatever attack, thus using the opportunity, and filling the bowl with an attack, when it could have been filled otherwise, maybe with some sort of outreach.

This is an amazingly thought out and well constructed analysis using in depth knowledge that show cases not only the lyrics and rapping itself, but the other side of the coin as well: the philosophies and underlying meanings that go along with the characters and historical contexts. Mat4yo Can I say that I think you misunderstood the "yo what happened" line. You are right that Socrates himself didn't use it in any meaningful way to question the others, but instead does it in a way that mocks them. Let me explain. Basically, with this line Socrates switches the perspective of his rap. He implies that Sun Tzu's rapping is so below par and that Socrates' is so profound that his own men under his command would be inspired by Socrates to apply Socrates' method to question Sun Tzu about his rapping skills. He then applies the question he thinks they would come up with, in a very generic "yo what happened". But there in lies the genius. He basically insults Sun Tzu's army by portraying their application of his psychologically profound method in the only capacity they are capable of, which is a lame and uninspiring question.He's basically calling them dumb. The insult even goes past that to mock Timothy Delaghetto's portrayal of Sun Tzu as a very gangsta type rapper, by throwing ghetto slang back in his face.
@Mat4yo
@Mat4yo 9 лет назад
Wasabifold good observation! I kind of implied that he was making his men question Sun Tzu, but I didn't think of it implying that their version of socratic method would be unintelligent.

Just a little contribution: I dont know if you noticed but the beat used in the rap battle have to parts: the first one with westerns which is very energy and upbeat while the eastern one is very dry and lowkey, playing well with the diferente beween them. Also when Sun zu atack socrates saying is his fault he should apologies is a direct inversion of what you said earlier about him consider even better than his parner in the battle. 9:45 It's wrong though, since Nietzsche simply wasn't a Nihilist. His philosophy is exactly the opposite. The mentality of the Übermensch lets him overcome the nihilism and be godlike himself since god is dead.
@Coff1nf33der
@Coff1nf33der 8 лет назад
Nietzsche never considered himself or others as Übermensch though. The Übermensch was something people were supposed to strife for and fail doing so. Through this constant reaching and failing, people would actually become higher versions of themselves. His sister of course changed a lot of his manuscripts, so the Nazis could think of themselves as Übermenschen. The verse about Nietzsche growing hate is obviously bullshit too, since I doubt that many "normal" people in Germany back then even read Nietzsche. The hate stemmed from extreme poverty through hyper inflation then used by extremists.
@luizh4049
@luizh4049 7 лет назад
Alneon you're correct that he wasn't a nihilist, but the rest is incorrect. What made him claim that nihilistic despair could be overcome is his theory of life affirmation and amor fati, ultimately.

Really enjoying the analysis of the ERB stuff. (Along with your latest battle) One thing that I thought was missing here is the line by line analysis that you have done before, this I felt was more jumbled just going to lines you liked the most. Anyways, I hope you can produce the content fast, it is very enjoyable.

@Mat4yo 9 лет назад
Justin Gurley I intended to not do the line by line analysis mainly because I had so much to say about the way the characters interacted, I felt like most of the descriptions for that allowed some of the lines to be self explanatory. Also, some people have complained that they can just look up the lyrics on rap genius, so I'm trying to accommodate to that audience with a type of content that they can't find through research.

Love the lyrics analysis, it is certainly way beyond anything i could do myself. And it made me watch the battle again, over and over and analyse deeperly the own behavior of the characters, actually just the western characters, once i am a philosophy student at university, and noticed a lot of stuff that passed unnoticed by me at a first contact. The dinamics ERB puts is really great,but i honestly think they should have make Voltaire try to ally with Nietzsche instead of socrates, and later it will be clear why. Anyway, first there is the use of the word symposium, it's great because it is the name of one of the most important platonic dialogues, hence one of most remarkable socratic apparition. This dialogue is an attempt to find an answer to what is love, by the way, and also features Aristofanes, one of the greatest cricticists of Socrates and his methods and investigation goals, it would divert too much explaining how and why, but i'd love to see some reference to "The clouds" on the eastern philosophers lines. When Voltaire says "droping western medicine on this east infections" is actually a bit confusing. Well, during the 18th century there was this huge discussion, on wich pretty much every relevant thinker took part on (Voltaire, Rousseau, Hume, La Bruyére, Mandelville, etc, etc) regarding weather or not luxury was favorable to mankinds development. There were two parties, one that said no, there is a huge need of a certain measure of adversity to make a man's life honorable and to make this man improve itself as a man, an example of this party, perhaps the most remarkable presently, is Rousseau, and his arguments on this point are in pretty much the entirety of his work, particularly on the two speeches, concerning the arts and sciences and concerning the origin inequality between man. The other party, of course, claim that it did help manking, and that's Voltaire party. And Voltaire himself puts that the circulation of luxury implies the circulation of culture, that is, commerce with the "east infections", for Voltaire would mean connecting distant cultures and distant types of knowledge, improving manking by that. Besides that he made a good amount of money by commerce sooo yeah... Now on to Nietzsche, when he says "take control of the life you're given" it's a reference of major importance, and it is actually way in door to the use of the word übermensch. I like the mention you've made about the parallel between übermensch and the company über company. I didn't actually seen it prior to you mentioning it, but it makes complete sence. The übermensch is a key term to understand Nietzsche thought. It is a character, in a certain manner (Nietzsche is particularly complex on what comes to writing style, you take the birth of tragedy, it's a certain style, you take zarathustra, it's totally different, you take the twilight of the idols, it's also way diferent) on the book Also spach Zarathustra (don't know the tittle in english, and dont think there will be much use saying it in portuguese) this book is the narrative of the tale of a man, a reclusive, that's spent many year in complete reclusion, having only an eagle and a snake as companions, then he decides to go back into civilization and teach people how to... drive.. their lives in order to reach a next step in their personal development, that is, become the übermensch. He fails, by the way. Also, and here i am fowarding a bit, Confucius says to Nietzsche "you killed god". Nietzsche killing god is not necessairly a religous position actually. The actual quote, and i think it's from the antichrist is "God is dead, and we killed him." That "we" is fundamental, Nietzsche is a very striking critical on the christian institutions of his time. When he says god is dead, it is not a refusal of the bible itself with the teach of Christ, the person of Christ actually, it is rather a refusal of christian institutions, that are, for him, the ones guilt of killing god, and corrupting the whole message. The reference of to god's death in his work is also found, again, in the zarathusta, right when he is leaving his reclusion the first person he meets is also an heremite, but a very religious one in oposition to the main hero, they talk a little, i honestly dont remmember the actuall conversation, but when they say their goodbyes they leave each other laughing, then the main character says, to himself "what a fool, doesn't he knows yet that god is dead". Back to Voltaire, i remmber once a professor of mine saying that his complete works when lined up would possibly be longer than the building we were at. That is a massive amount of stuff, and if you take, for instance, his english or philosophical letteres (it depends on the edition you have, at least in portuguese) you will find he goes throught and really wide range of themes, passing from the quakers to comparing Descartes to Newton, and that's a very bold move of anybody. But it also means that it is hardly reaching any depth on his thought, he is so a very good crictical, and also made some interisting arguments himself, but if you take the bigger picture of his work, and this is just an opinion i tend to have about Voltaire, much of what his done seems a little he is just yapping actually. You can't go too far on a "voltairian theory". But the guy still is brilliant and certainly should still be respect and read with the deserved care and credits. Just not as much as if we were still on the 18th century. Socrates next line, i honestly think ERB is being ironical when they make Socrates say to Sun Tzu "luckly you didn't author...". In fact all we have left of him is what was written by others (Plato, Aristofanes and Xenofonte) and because of that is hard to differ who is Socrates and who is Plato, or Xenofonte. And when you take Aristofanes's Clouds for example, the way he portraits Socrates is radically diferent of that in platonic dialogues. While in Plato he is that brilliant orator that using the dialectical method (by the way, great exposition of it, you pretty much coverd it's form, pun intended, but i would only add what was the goal of this method. But that perfectly understandable, because this goal actually chances during what is classically put as Socrates lifeline on the dialogues... The first type, when he is younger, shows a Socrates trying to learn by others what is that special think he is trying to learn, so he goes and ask to authorities on the subject. Learning that those self proclaimed authorities didn't know the answer he creates the actuall dialectical method, that is what u pretty much described, a confrontation of two diferent answers and looking to weakspots in order to, in a way, unveil the truth about that matter, normally here his interlocutors are sophists, that is, professional orators, so the dialogues here look a lot to the rap battle, they are quite aggressive, gorgias for instance is even funny because of how Calicles and socrates mistreat eachother. Specially Calicles, Socrates keeps a more altive position. And the last type is that of his maturity, when he actually have disciples, and is also we he become to treat matters in a more methaphysical way, the most dense dialogues, like meno, thaetetus (my personal favorite), the seven books of the republic and phaedo, are found in this phase, also is where u can find a bigger number of definitions, like the theory of forms, or knowledge being true justified belief (that was only answer a few decades ago, by Gettier, on a three page article) ) in Aristofanes he is pretty much a freeloader, taking advantage on his pupils. And i was forgeting Conficius line. A: Voltaire was actually really arrogant, just see his letters to Rousseau, luckly Rousseau had quite a great sense of being a dick himself. B: It is claimed that Hitler was a great fan of Nietzsche and believed his ideas could help making Germany a sort of "überland", but Nietzsche was a misanthrope, he didn't hate just minorities, he hated pretty much everybody. Now, the key line, in my opinion, in the battle is Sun Tzu "i think you owe both your students here an appology". That's the ultimate provocation on them all, but specially Nietzsche. He really, i mean REALLY, would hate being called Socrates's student. You can find the reason why on his first work: the birth of tragedy. On this work he analyses the plays of three greek writers: Ésquilo, Sofocles and Euripedes; this analysis is based on the identification of two extremes of their way of writing, Esquilo is dyonisiac, that means he doesn't actually holds on to a formal manner, it's more intuitive, more animal, and therefore for Nietzsche more purely human, closer to a real portrait of what mankind should keep on being. Then appears Socrates, his search for a universal truth, his ideal of knowledge is what allows the appearence and rapid popularity growth of Euripedes, an apoliniac writer, more glued to a form to something more artificial, and distant to what Nietzsche's views as an ideal path for people conducting their lives. So, basicly for him Socrates is responsible for the corruption of easter civilization, being associated with such pervertion is untolerable for him. And i believe it also explains Socrates overreaction to being called plebe by someone who clearly declares himself not to look for truth in the socratic manner. Also, continuing with this it's nice to take a look on other nietzschenian text, the twilight of the idols, one chapter more exactly, one you just have to take a look on the title: "Socrates's problem". Actually this entire book consist on attacking Socrates legacy as a father, painting a portrait of him more as a destructor of reason. There is also a very famous quote of his, i honestly don't remmember where it is, sorry for that, on which after doing a whole history of knowledge, and how since Socrates things got progressivly worse, he, and i actually think that right here this quote is more of a trivia, he describes Kant, father of critical philosphy and author of the critics of pure and practical reason, the chinese of Könisberg, i kinda expected an apparition of Kant on the eastern side because of that. :P Moving on, i said Voltaire would possibly try to ally with Nietzsche instead of Socrates, well, first they do have more similar personalities, second, Socrates was certainly not known for appealing to a confortable life, third, there is Socrates answer about Voltaire making a mockery of ethics. Also, in Socrates, specially on the republic, there is a bigger sense of comunity than in both Voltaire or Nietzsche, those are more individualist thinkers. Anyway, here is why i thinking Socrates gave that answer to Voltaire's approach. First, Voltaire did have inherited a lot of money, but still dedicated part of his atentions to business, that as i said, influenced a lot on his thinkings. Second, he was possibly the most cafeine addicted person to ever live, he drinking gallons after gallons on daily basis. Third and most important, making mockery of ethics. For this one it is necessary to go back to the discussion about luxury. The main diference between the ones contrary and those against luxury was on how did they base their arguments. I mean, if you take for example Gibbon, one of the greast historians of english language, if not the greatest, contrary to luxury, that is visible on his history of the roman empire, more precisely of the decay of the roman empire. He points out that when Rome was a republic the luxury trades were rare, romans had to make things themselves, becomingo stronger, more focused, better, after while, and that after becoming and empire, and expanding it's territory, including new cultures and new luxurious goods, the romans began to have an easier life, becoming weaker, and falling to the hands of a bunch of simplistic barbarians. If you look close enough you can notice where Gibbon takes us, is to a moral argument of why there should be no luxury on people lives. Then you look to Rousseau, possibly Voltaire biggest oponent, and you find whom as role model for a perfect, honored and strong life? Socrates. He always been depicted as living a way simpler life than the rest of the athenians. So his refusal of Voltaire's values is pretty much to be expected. And if i was Voltaire, i certainly wouldn't even try to be pals with Socrates, i would just battle the easterns and move on to my next bottle of coffe. I probaly am overthinking the video, but anyway, i really this battle, not only for treating a subject most dear to me, but just take a long at the ridiculously long text i've to respond to a three minute video haha And i've just covered half of it, and shallowly, i believe.

Holy Video Necromancy Batman! (One of the few breakdowns I found of this battle) - A note as to the stability of Eastern Philosophy vs. Western. It is likely intentional as, while the East had intense internal competition, it never allowed such competition to spill out to the outside world and the Chinese world that they are all from were all about peace and unity. This made it easy for the nation to come together against outside threats. And then fall apart to internal disputes when the outside threats had been removed.

On your analysis of the use of the word ‘golden rule’ or more specifically ‘rule’; I think you may have missed the angle of rule as its second meaning, as in being a ruler, someone of power and authority. when one is considered a ruler, they are often considered elevated over all others, hence the phrase ‘to rule over’. So looked at in this context the phrase ‘way above you weak rookies’ could make more sense. Additionally as I understand it the use of the word ‘golden’ in the phrase ‘golden rule’ is not just to emphasize how Important the rule is but how absolute it is gold, so I interpreted him as saying ‘I’m the absolutely ruler, dominating you weak and childish armatures’, or something to that effect at least. But hey what do I know I’m just growing this out after finding the video years after it was posted lol

Stanley Small its not preventing anything, I'm simply waiting. there will most definitely be 2 more Chisel This! episodes about ERB in the near future because they have 2 more to go within the next month. After that, they will go on break. I will use that break time to target their older episodes and offer more content about ERB specifically when ERB is not offering content themselves. also, as clearly seen with this new battle, the next 2 battles could alter the top/bottom 5 list as well.

This is a great analysis of this rap battle. A few things that were said that may have had a deeper meaning: "I'll put my knee up in your chi..." Chi is believed to be the state in which Sun Wu was born and may have been a reference to his home state as well as what you mentioned. "I'll knock your war mongering head out your to go box hat." Sun Tzu was condemned by many Confucians by virtue of being a member of the "Militarist" school of thought, which didn't adhere to the Confucian ideal of culturally overtaking enemies. and were condemned as "Warmongers" and "Deceptive".
@Mat4yo
@Mat4yo 9 лет назад
Travis Anderson I did explain the second meaning of Chi, and did reference the hometown thing but can't remember if I cut it out or not. And about the war mongering thing, I just didn't explain that because I thought it was obvious. but good further explanation. new episode coming tonight!

One of the main principles of Daoism was going with the flow, moving around the obstacles in your life, as opposed to the Nietzschean philosophy of powering through them (the "Ubermensch"), making them an even better pairing than you gave credit for in your character analysis section, and adding an extra layer to "get out the way."

I've watched the battle a few more times with your own analysis in mind. I think I have something to add about the final line (although it's pretty trivial). When Confucius says "You can all hold these fortune cookies", I felt like the word 'hold' could've been replaced with the word 'eat'. As fortune cookies are a type of food, and obviously they were using a more modern insult for this line, saying 'eat' instead, would be even better because it would reference both the food and the insult, simultaneously. If the line was reversed, and one of the Western philosophers was insulting Confucius instead, they could also do the same thing (make a reference to the food, as well as the modern insult), by saying something like "I'll break/crack/smash your fortune cookies". It would address a stereotype, considering fortune cookies are associated with China (even though I think it was a western creation). But anyway, I'm getting off track. I mainly just wanted to bring up a minor adjustment that could've been made to the final line.
@Mat4yo
@Mat4yo 9 лет назад
Alyson Rodrigues very good observation! I didn't think of making an alternative to that because I know they wanted it to be simple and to the point, but that's very interesting to think about.

I Liked that you showed the connection between Uber and driven. I am just not sure you knew that ubermensch is German for Superman; a term Hitler used to describe his so-called Master Race of Germans. So there is a double meaning to that phrase as "driven" would mean "committed" in an obsessive-compulsive fashion.

Mat4yo Just finished the video. Looking forward to the top 5/bottom 5 favourite ERB list. If I could comment on anything to do with the video, though, is about the "move bitch, get out the way." I understand that you have a non-negative opinion of the line, probably neutral, if that's what I picked up from the analysis you gave. I feel as if the line is in fact genius for improving the memorability of the rap itself. People will watch the video, hear that line, and make the battle more enjoyable for themselves. Which means their chances of replaying the audio in the background will increase. And inadvertently, they will also learn some stuff about philosophy. You would also need to remember that a younger audience exists for ERB, which will probably not understand most of the references - so to appeal to them, ERB sometimes adds lines such as these that make it enjoyable for everyone. I'm saying younger audience, even though the sentence includes the absolutely evil-ridden disgrace of a word "bitch," according to apache helicopter parents that upon hearing that word from a mile off, will use its M320 chain gun to locate and exterminate the demon who said You-Know-What. Sometimes it's weird to be replied to by the same person you just watched ramble for about half an hour. I don't know. Anyway, good work on the video, fantastic in-depth analysis.

"his anger manifests as the result of his anti-belief" that's not coherent with Nietzschean philosophy. I understand that your error likely stands with over-simplified explanations of Nietzsche's philosophy or someone's misunderstandments, but Nietzsche's whole end-goal was to eliminate the nihilistic despair that came with the death of God and skepticism, preaching thus life-affirmation and the awaiting of the Ubermensch.
