Always checking on those sticks. The bears love to play with them and pull them out of the water hole. They love bathing in them too. I have countless pics of bears totally immersed in the water hole cooling off in the summer heat.

We have the same problem up here. They slosh around in there for hours and take turns climbing in. I have a pile of videos. Kind of annoying, lol.

Great video I might decide to switch to these tanks from digging large ponds. I'm not 100% on the E. HD midges, because a few years back in upstate New York they had a massive EHD outbreak, but they also had record rains during the entire period. And the local biologists could not explain the non Correlation with the muddy midge theory. Hopefully at some point they can become certain on some of the EHD data Thanks

The one good thing is they do know that's where the midge propagates...also why they go away when it rains late summer. It's a good thing to know...lots of good research out there.

Your info on water holes led to two awesome bucks being taken by my 12yr old protege in Eastern IA last year- one during youth season and one during early ML (tagged out on bucks by mid-October). The biggest I could find was 150 gallon tank, but we have not had to fill it since we put it in last May. Some crazy trail cam pics of deer actually getting in the tank??? Thanks again for the tips-keep them coming.

Jeff, I was going to install a 110 gallon tank after watching some of your older videos but the 300 gallon tank makes more sense! October and November are our driest months when water tends to dry up! Most of the year, water is plentiful but during the dry months, water is better than bait!

Love your info on water holes Jeff. One thing I might add is most folks don’t have the money and all that big equipment to dig/fill those behemoths. Little water holes can work well also. You just have to be more inventive on how to keep them filled. I use cut 8” x 36” long pvc pipes cut in half and placed together so it works as a catch for rain. I only wish I could afford all that fancy stuff you use.

In my area, the pressure is so immense that a small water hole would do more harm than good because if having to fill it constantly.

You mentioned Mosquito infested ! Any still water is a breeding ground for them ! You don't try to control them ? Mosquitos carry West Nile virus and studies say Lyme Disease and EHD too ! I use Mosquito Dunks in all my still water holes , can buy them at TSC too ! I still have frogs and tadpoles in my water holes and every kind of birds and animals drink from them . Been using them for over 20 yrs . ! Keep the Great Videos Coming ! Stay Safe & Healthy ! God Bless !
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 месяца назад
EHD and Lyme is not spread by Mosquitoes...in any way. It is completely unnecessary to control mosquitoes in small waterholes. If anything the first kills them in October and if they did keep deer from drinking out of them it would be a good thing because they would stay full until needed most by deer and hunter. But, the mosquitoes don't keep the deer from drinking out of them and it is completely natural. There are some hunting industry companies that take folks hard earned dollars away by making them think they need to control mosquitoes...but don't fall for it. Ad a seed company and the leading authority for using waterholes in the hunting industry (based on amount of experience and volume of content created), we could make roughly over $100,000 selling product to customers that would remove mosquitoes. However we don't do that because we would rather be correct and ethical...than make a lot of money selling a product we don't believe in.

My brain is always going. Just wondering and thanks Jeff

Shoot! Didn’t think to check drain plug! I just buried one exactly as shown with an excavator and having someone fill it with water tank this week. Do you think it would be a bad idea to have them slap a small section of flex seal over the inside? I’d be pressing my luck to ask them to dig it out and tighten it! 😅

My new property has a major river and creek running through it. I’ve previously used watering holes with great results on past owned properties. There is plenty of water but I have heard animals like to drink warm water and deer will choose a watering hole over a cool creek. Has anyone seen this?

We used 15 gallon milk jugs that we strapped to the front (1) and to the back (2). Worked very well! Of course limited but better than nothing. Also, pulling a small trailer with a tote works very well and keeps your ATV from becoming too tippy.

Right now doesn't matter....but if you are talking about hunting season, you need a thick edge around a consistent year long food source. Then you need hardwood regen within your woods with enough cover for those does to bed within 50 yards of the food if they want to.
