This super easy crochet pattern for a Comfort Mat for Pet Rescue Centers is a wonderful project to make because it provides comfort for animals in a stressful situation and is a great stash buster! This mat is 12' x 18", but check out your local rescue centers to see what sizes they need! The pattern is easy to adjust.
ALSO.... many people are commenting and are concerned about pets' claws getting caught in the crochet work. Again, I say, contact your local shelter and see what (or if) they want for mats, pads, and blankets. Here is a video of a 99-year-old woman who has been making these for years: • 99-year-old crochet en...

Many people are concerned about claws getting caught in the crochet work. Check with your local shelter to see what (or if) they want for crocheted items. I donate to three different shelters and none of them express this concern, nor does this 99-year-old woman who has been making these for years: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LMZcp736sbM.html

I would be surprised if a claw got stuck in this thickness and tight stitch. I could see it happening if the stitch was very loose, but this tight it should not be a problem.

I am a member of our local shelter's knitting/crocheting "Knittin' for Kittens" group. We meet once a month at the shelter to bring in our completed "knits," pick up donated yarn, share info. and socialize. We either knit or crochet -- all is accepted. We work from established patterns, but also freestyle to be creative. Currently, our shelter needs more round beds, so those who crochet are working on that. We also crochet stuffed yarn toys (no catnip), and crochet over wine corks to make toys. One member specializes in making items for the annual fundraising auction. I would encourage anybody to contact their local shelter and see if they have such a crafting group, or ask permission to start one. We mostly work with the yarn that is donated, or purchased through the shelter's Amazon wish list, so there is very little out-of-pocket expense for us to make these "knits." I saw your video on using the magic knot to connect yarn strands, and I'll be trying that. Thanks!

I think this is a great idea!! I have a friend who has 5 cats. They were given to her when a previous owner couldn't keep them. Everyone knows she doesn't have it in her to turn one away. She has turned them all into house cats that don't go out.They sleep on her crocheted afghans all the time without getting their nails caught.

Exactly! Cats love crochet!!! I find the most common complaint with fellow crocheters who own cats is that they can't keep them off their crochet projects....

Yes, the multiple strands of yarn give it that "rug texture", so using a strip of fabric, instead of yarn, would work as well!

Oh thank you so much for this pattern! Your instructions are very clear. I would not have thought to do the first row through the bumps or known how to fix a dropped loop in that way. I watched your magic knot video, too, which is brilliant! I knit and crochet mittens for charity and end up with a lot of leftover scrap yarn. Now I know what to do with it! I'll check with my local pet shelters to see what they need.

I'm thrilled this video popped up, I just subscribed and shared it on pinterest. I hope that helps your channel.❤ My dear dog Lola passed away February 29th. Obviously I'm heartbroken. I think doing this will make me feel better, I know I cannot adopt a dog now I'm just too sad. I don't believe I'll ever get another dog. I just clicked on your blog and saw that you do Dot painting. I did that a few years ago on and off. Nothing Grand but I've been thinking about doing that again. I've been doing a lot of zentangle when I'm not crocheting. Being creative has always been a part of me and it's always made me feel happy and also gives a great sense of accomplishment. ❤ I'm not very tech-savvy, I'm only 56 but I don't do social media except youtube. So I really don't know blogs and things like that. I will check your blog out more in the dot painting. Can't wait.

This is a wonderful idea. Do you recommend natural fibers or acrylic? Personally I’m thinking acrylic would be the easiest to maintain and not shrink in the dryer, but then it would be hot in the summer.
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 4 месяца назад
I am using acrylic because that's what I have on hand. You do make good points about fiber care, so I think that would be a personal call. I don't think heat would be an issue because they will be laying on top of the mats with lots are circulation around them. Perhaps in a very hot climate, cotton would be the better choice...

Perfect for washable laying pads for our chicken, too. Two solids, and a variegated. Time to bring out the "chunky boi" hook. It could make a decent dish-drying pad. (All in cotton, btw). There is so very much free yarn lying around this little town. Sourcing is not an issue right now. Perhaps the local animal hospital could use some?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 3 месяца назад
I would have never thought of laying pads for chickens! What a great idea... and the drying pad! I got the idea to make place mats and a hot pad as well. There are so many possibilities. I know some animal hospitals like comfort blankets to wrap the animals up in after they've come out of surgery... thanks for sharing!

Love this! What about for dogs?! How many chains and how many rows for a doggie matt? Would love to make them and donate to my shelter in my town. ❤❤
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 4 месяца назад
Contact your local shelter and ask them what sizes they need. Then simply make the foundation chain a bit longer and add more rows until you get the desired size! This stitch pattern tends to stretch out a bit, so you want to make the fc a little shorter than the finished width. See 4:00 in the video, I give more detail about this...

I have been making this very similar thing for over 25 years. All the yarn I use is donated. I have made over 10,000 blankets. And all my local animal shelters love them. All cats that are adopted take their blanket home with them! It's Nice to see when I go to my vets office and I see a blanket ive made in a carrier. All random acts of kindness. @createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 4 месяца назад
No, we have 3 cat shelters that gladly take these mats. They want them to fit in the carrying cases and request them to be 12" x 18" and 12" x 24". If you have pets, and you crochet, you may have noticed how much they love to cuddle up to your crochet work. I would contact the shelters directly and ask them...the person at the vet may have had an opinion rather than actual knowledge.
