I like your formula for the number of turning chains based on how many times you yarn over to complete the stitch, i.e.; one for single and half-double crochet, two for double crochet and so on. It makes complete sense & I've never seen it explained that way before. Because you're a scientist by profession, you think of things in a scientific or mathematical manner. For those of us who like logic, this makes so much sense and is easy to understand! Thank you, Nikki!

This video is the first that made it clear to me (beginner trying to teach myself through books and videos) that the hook goes through both strands of the V with each stitch of each row. I was putting hook through just one yarn stitch. So thank you for that!!!!

I am self-taught and began from a book but since I didn't have anybody to explain much in the pictures were not that much help I did the best I could and the method you were explaining is just what made sense to me and is prettier than what the book said to do so, there you have it. It all makes sense now. I use a stitch marker at each end to mark my first and last stitch. Up till now, it has been ‘go to’ insurance for straight edges. I didn’t realise I’d been doing it right all this time! Thank you for clarifying it for me. ❣️🌹

I was going to use this to respond to just one but I now see several ppl are complaining.... So, here is what I was saying. In regards to not being able to follow what she's saying: Maybe its more for an advanced beginner but, when you look at patterns they will say for example, "chain 60, in 3rd chain from hook hdc to end, chain 2 turn". So you'd have 58 stitches, bc 2 was used as the turning chain. So, what happens, especially for us beginners, we get confused as to where the end of the chain is bc it looks like there's another stitch. Which of course is when all of our stuff goes wonky. So, what she telling you is that instead of doing a ch2, turn, hdc----remember to only do one, as she demonstrated the yo, and how many times you yo and pull through to finish that stitch. What that does is makes the stitches tighter on the ends and keeps them to the actual height of the stitch, which is why sc and hdc is only a ch1, bc that's the number of times you yo and pull through to complete that stitch. Likewise for the dc, you ch2 because you will yo two times to complete that stitch. Really it's very helpful for us newbies, especially when trying to figure out where to end the st in the row. The extra sts ( which you usually find in patterns saying: for hdc they say ch2, DC they say ch3, and treble/triple crochet they say ch4) is what caused the side to bulge out a little not keeping a tight straight line. So, what you have is an every other row on the sides with a bulge due to those 'extra' stitches most patterns tell you to do. Your other option is to chain the turning chains VERY, VERY tightly. I'm not sure everyone's skill level of crochet whose complaining, but I hope this helps. I found, when first starting, I would search for beginner videos and I'd watch them through first. Then I'd try to follow along. You can slow the play time down, not to mention 'rewind/replay' the instructions you're having a hard time with, rewinding until you can see and understand what they are saying. If after giving it that much effort and you still can't understand, move on to another persons video. They put in a lot of time, and effort to put these vids up for free. Maybe ask for some clarification in the comments section instead of basically saying she a bad teacher. If the person who made the video doesn't respond, most of the time another crocheter in the comments section will. Generally in this hobby group, people are helpful to each other. They are excited to share their skills and knowledge and are very welcoming to us newbies. So, I hope my above comments and explanations help you to follow the video better. Happy New Year!

What if it says to skip the first stitch and chain 1 ? I’m workin a pattern that’s driving me crazy cause Trying to find what’s causing my side to slant .

Helpful overall but frustrating that the camera went out of focus for the critical stitches and at times your piece wasn’t even in the frame! This happened a lot near the end

Thank you so much. I was making a swatch in double crochet and couldn't seem to keep the edges straight or the same number of stitches per row. The demonstration video on the pattern of the sweater I am making shows 3 turning chains and going into the third double crochet for the second row. I ripped out over and over and finally found your video. Using 2 turning chains and going into the first stitch has made a world of difference. Just hope it keeps the number of pattern stitches correct, since the designer was doing it differently.

Nicki you are such a fantastic instructor, I really appreciated the close ups of the stitches and you have a pleasant voice, that is easy to listen to. Sometimes the work was out of focus but not terribly much. I found your tutorial easy to follow and understand but it would be better if you focused on only one crochet stitch per segment of the tutorial.

I'm back to watch this thru. I first began watching couple months ago when I watched just enough to get going. Today I came back to relearn, as I'd forgotten some key pointer. This is the best method offered, in my opinion. I've seen some other methods that seem convoluted and needless effort, where this method is simple, straight forward and works. I've used it for single and hdc and it's worked great, with good end results. Now I want to use it for taller stitches, for which I am back. Great video, thanks for sharing.
