EXTRA INFO: You can separate the offsets or daughter bulbs/corms from the mother corm by gently twisting them. Store them with the larger corms and when autumn comes I'd recommend planting the offsets into labelled pots and allow them to bulk up there for a few years before moving them into a larger container or the open soil. Thanks for watching!
i've never seen crocus bulbs so small! My crocus bulbs are the size of small garlic cloves at least six times bigger than yours. What's up with that? Are they the offsets? And if so, when planted will the offsets eventually grow as large as the mother bulb?
Hi, the little crocuses are the offsets from the crocuses I planted the season before, those crocuses were also around the size of yours. The offsets will also eventually grow to as large as the adult bulbs, it may take up to 3 to 4 years for them to bulk up and then flower. I normally plant the offsets into separate pots and label them so I can keep on eye on how they are growing 😁
Hi Grace, glad the video helped you! I let my crocuses tell me when to lift them, once they've finished flowering and the leaves are turning yellow. That's normally around late April 😍
Hi, I was wondering-what if you just let them in the soil? I have planted these on my grandmothers grave, thats the reason why Im asking.. Is it ok to just let them be and divide them every 4-5 years? Thank you in advance!
Hi Cami, yes you can definitely plant them in the open soil and allow them to spread, dividing when necessary. It's such a beautiful sight to see crocus drifts! And I'm sure your grandmother's grave looks very pretty in spring 🌱 I make videos primarily for container/balcony gardens so that's why I plant mine in pots 😊
Hi Jim, you can plant them now however if your climate is still warm the crocuses could start to emerge before the winter comes. Crocuses need at least 12 to 15 weeks of 7°C or less to flower properly so I'd suggest calculating when you want them to flower and then plant them within the 12 to 15 weeks. 🌱
Hi Sofi, thank you for your comment. The ideal place to store bulbs is cool, dark and dry ideally between 10 and 16C so if your garden shed is like that it should be fine. Take care that no mice or other animals nibble them!
Hi Farr, sorry your crocuses didn't flower this year. There are many possible reasons: it could be they were in soil that is not free-draining enough leading to waterlogged conditions, the soil lacks enough nutrients to support flower growth, they received too much or too little water or weren't watered enough when planted, the temperatures didn't get low enough to trigger flowering in the spring, the bulbs have become overcrowded and need to be dug up and separated, pests munching on them or the bulbs if planted new may have had pests or diseases. Hope that helps :)
