Beyond its first thirty pages and despite numerous attempts, Itamar Vieira Junior’s 'Crooked Plow' doesn’t do much interesting to me. Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2024.
5/10
Crooked Plow: Deep in Brazil’s neglected Bahia hinterland, two sisters find an ancient knife beneath their grandmother’s bed and, momentarily mystified by its power, decide to taste its metal. The shuddering violence that follows marks their lives and binds them together forever.

Thanks for watching, and remember: the plow was quite straight, really.

This is my favourite read of the year by far, so this review is very odd to me. Anyways. Free speech.

Bit of a Faulknerian tribute act to The Sound and the Fury plotwise, though nowhere near as good stylistically. Did like it overall but I agree that there’s stretches that are anonymous between some really engrossing patches.

This book is a huge success here in Brazil, celebrated by a certain side of the political spectrum. Everything I hear from it sounds anachronistic, uninteresting and boring, but the marketing around it is quite powerful ( because everything that belongs to this specific political spectrum, these days, gets maximum support from the cultural machine ). I know I should be here commemorating a fellow Brazilian brother who is taking our literature to the realms of the International Booker Prize, but let's be fair, it all sounds like a political theater and literature should have nothing to do with it. In spite of all my annoyance, I will read this book in order to understand the hype about it and try to make sense of the mechanisms behind it. By the way, I've enjoyed your review. You make very interesting points.

@@eduardoo31 I think @eduardoo31 doesn't understand the difference between form and content. You are aware that art doesn't become good just because the content is important or because the author has good intentions? Art is about form and aesthetics. You should check out Milton Hatoum if you are interested in a Brazilian author who is formally accomplished.

@@jnshnrisk i said nothing about the book, mind you. Just wanted to be confrontational toward a weirdo right winger who 100% voted for b*lsonaro ;)
