I switched from a PC to a Macbook Air in 2016. I very seldom used anything in Photos or Preview because I just couldn't figure things out. I would use Photoshop or PSE for piddly little things like this crop, resize, and send. This video shows me that Preview has some powerful tools that I can use and I'm grateful!

Hi Gary! I'm fairly new to Mac and have been trying to figure out my photo workflow. I often like to send smaller versions of my photos via email. I already knew about most of this but the New from Clipboard is helpful. Now all I need is to be figure out how to do batch processing to reduce the size of many photos at once (without the cropping, of course).
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
Look into using the Shortcuts app for that. Or, just rely on the Mail app's built-in function where it makes images smaller before you send them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7MBtQpH7iJE.html

@ithinkaboutthings9052

Clear, concise and to the point as always, Gary. Is there a simple way to put 2 or more images together using the stuff we already have on our MacBook? For example, I want to put myself in front of a building or monument to use as a thumbnail for a YT video and I don’t have Photoshop. Plus, I’m on a 2012 MacBook Pro which won’t update to the latest iOS. Any thoughts?
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
You can do that in Preview. Open both images. Select only yourself from one image (or use the new Copy Subject feature) and then copy and paste it into the other image. See macmost.com/10-uses-for-the-copy-subject-function-in-macos.html for instance.

I want to resize the preview window( not an image). But it seems there's some default setting that doesn't allow to make the window narrower. Any advice? Thank you.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
Right, any app would have a minimum size of its windows. I can't give advice unless I know what you goal is here. You can always overlap windows, or use multiple spaces (Mission Control).

Hi Gary, You say the image is opened "by default." I have an old copy of Photoshop Elements on my iMac. When I try to open an image, Adobe tries to get me to subscribe. How do I make Preview open image "by default?" Thanks for your good work!
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
Looks like you selected the option when you first ran Photoshop Elements to allow it to be the default app for images. To change it back, see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oVqka7TGdOA.html

@@macmost how else do I find out if you have such a tutorial? I never expected that all your tutorials would be here on RU-vid. I expected that you may say that you have such a tutorial available to your patrons, which I would then join to learn more. What I did not expect was a rude approach to your answer to my question. What a disappointment! I’ve given you loads of views over the years. 😞

@@planwithmarianne3811 Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I was honestly asking. Usually people ask a question about the tutorial they are viewing. I thought maybe I was misreading your question and not understanding what you were asking. Keep in mind I have to read and respond to hundreds of comments and questions per day so I fly through them as quickly as I can. I don't always have the luxury of thinking through each sentence. Most of my tutorials are at MacMost.com and there's a search box at the top of the site. But you can also search here on RU-vid if you like. But I also have a forum where you can ask anything and I'll point you to the right video if one exists: macmost.com/ask

Gary, Is there any versioning taking place when you crop a file and save it in place? That is, is the original version still on the computer somewhere taking up the space of the original file size or is it gone completely? Of course, sometimes we want to keep the full size original and are making the smaller file for another purpose, but if we want to resize a lot of monstrously large images as a way of increasing available space on the hard drive, is resizing an effective method? or are both the original and the revised both somewhere on the computer so this strategy would reduce available space rather than increase it?
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
It should save over the image. Of course you can rely on Time Machine to keep your previous version from the last hour in case you make a mistake. But it is a good idea to be very aware of what you are choosing to do if you just make a change and save.
@stephenheacock5855
@stephenheacock5855 Год назад
@@macmost Thanks. Yes, the few times I've done this, I've copied all the large files to a backup before editing so that if I ever need the large versions in the future I can retrieve them off of the backup -- or from Time Machine (I do both TM and my own backups). You can never overemphasize the importance of backups of any data that you don't want to lose.

How do you rotate a pdf or pic file a few degrees on a Mac? 5 or 6 degrees?
@macmost

You can do that in the Photos app if the photo is there. Otherwise, most (all?) graphics apps like Pixelmator, Photoshop, Acorn, etc, will do that.

@macmost
@macmost Год назад
@@dougiefroghopper7567 Not sure what you mean. It wouldn't "magnify" it just by rotating it in Photos or any of those others. Maybe you are confusing the zoom you are seeing when you crop with changing the photo itself.

I just want to select a part of an image, enlarge or shrink it, and leave it on the same image. On MS Paint I just select, click on the resize dots and boom! I'm done. I don't know why it's so frustratingly hard to do something so simple on a Mac.
@macmost
@macmost Год назад
That's not what I am covering here, but it is easy to do with Preview. Just select an area, Copy, Paste, drag the corners to resize, drag the whole thing to reposition. Also, keep in mind that there are many different image editing apps out there too, not just Preview or MS Paint. This isn't an "on Window" vs "on Mac" thing. This is about which app you are using, regardless of the operating system.
@Mr-Clark
@Mr-Clark Год назад
