Once again, it's Wednesday, so it's time for another installment of "Western New York Wednesday" here on the channel. This week, I'm reviewing another beer from the Mortalis Brewing Company, and it's their Crosby. This is a Double IPA that is brewed with Idaho 7, Vista and Chinook hops. I've reviewed a ton of beers from Mortalis on the channel, but not many hop-forward ones, so I thought it'd be fun to grab a beer like this and give it a go. What do I think about it? Let's find out!
Commercial Description:
This Double IPA highlights Crosby Estate hops. A large helping of Idaho 7, Vista, and Chinook meld together to give us flavors of tropical stone fruit, citrus, and a hint of herbal pine for a perfect balance. Best enjoyed overlooking the hop fields of Oregon, on the patio, or wherever one might be.
Pertinent Information:
Brewery - Mortalis Brewing Company (Avon, NY)
Beer - Crosby
Style - Double IPA
ABV - 8.0%
IBU - N/A
Canned On Date - 06/18/24 (Just under three weeks old at the time of review)

It was great, Wes! Mortalis is hit or miss for me when it comes to hop-forward beers, but they certainly nailed this one. So damn good. Cheers, dude!

That's what I'm talking about, dude! I don't know what I'd do without the ability to buy singles. I wouldn't be posting a review per day, that's for sure. It's a beautiful way to explore beer without breaking the bank. Cheers, man!

So amazing meeting you this past weekend! What an awesome surprise! I always associate Mortalis with fruited sours. Occasionally I see Mortalis on the shelves by me. I will have to keep my eye out for this one. I would absolutely like to try something from Mortalis that is not a fruited sour. Cool to see a beer with label art referencing a local hop farm. Cheers!

Dude, it was an absolute blast! I was so happy I was able to come up for the day on Sunday. I would've been thoroughly disappointed if I missed out. I saw on Untappd that you guys popped the Gemini Bomb Pop variant that I brought up, and you seemed to enjoy it. I think their Heavily Fruited Sours are some of the best in the game, but when they make distro, the prices are quite high, which is why I brought up three different offerings from them. Their hop-forward beers can be hit or miss, but this was a definite hit! If I come down to Cleveland at some point in the future again, I'll make sure to hit up you and TK, and we'll hit up a brewery or two, if you guys are game. Cheers, Anderson!

@@averagejoe716 The Gemini Bomb Pop was an excellent beer. The flavors were exactly as described on the can, however, I wish it had been a tad more sour. Over all it was a great beer. Thank you for bringing that! Definitely hit me up if you are ever going to be near Cleveland and if I am around we can absolutely meet up. Unfortunately, TK actually lives about 2 hours south west of Cleveland so it maybe hard for him to meet up with us. Cheers!

Yeah, I feel like those Heavily Fruited/Smoothie/Slushy Sour Ales lack a true firm tart/sour punch. Mortalis usually NAILS the flavor, but it's hit or miss when it comes to that tart/sour character. Glad you dug it! I figured as much with TK, but if I knew ahead of time, maybe we could figure something out.

Nerd alert incoming 🤓: This has got to be a reference to Crosby which is one of the better hop farms in the U.S. I’ve heard a lot of big time brewers rave about how good their product is on some podcasts. I would assume all of the hops in the beer came from Crosby Also if you ever see CGX listed in the beer info, that’s Crosby’s version of Cryo. I haven’t had a ton of experience with Idaho 7 by itself but last summer I did have a single hopped Idaho 7 lager from homes that I liked quite a bit so I’d say I’m a fan of currently. Anyways this sounded like a cool beer and I usually dig when breweries go out in a limb and exclude those “banger” hops to see how it turns out.

Oh, 100%. I think I mentioned in the review about the label perhaps being a picture/portrait of the Crosby hop farm, but I didn't mention much else about it. All the hops are definitely from their hop farm, and I knew about the CGX thing, although Mortalis didn't specify if any of the hops were CGX. Without question, man. I love me some Idaho 7 when it's done well. Not much pineapple to speak about in this one, but I think the weird hop bill worked extremely well. I'm falling in love with Vista, and even though I didn't get that distinct pear note in the taste, this beer was awesome! Love when breweries go outside the box with a hop combination like this. Makes for a fun drinking experience! I think you'd dig this one, brother! Cheers, Curtis!

@@averagejoe716 I think I would like this one for sure. You don’t see a lot of Vista but it’s definitely one I’d like to try.
