Cross Flow Heat Exchanger (mixed/mixed): Heat Transfer Examples for Mechanical Engineers

In this problem, we analyze a crossflow heat exchanger used to cool truck coolant. Given particular operating parameters, we’re asked to find the exit temperature of the coolant.
Heat exchanger problems typically have one of two potential main goals: (a) find the heat transferred between two fluids, OR (b) find the area needed to achieve a required target heat transfer between two fluids. In this example, we go through a systematic process to find the heat transfer transferred between two fluids when both flows are unmixed. I believe that understanding this process will allow you to solve any heat exchanger problem.

Hey Mike, your videos are amazing. Is there anyway we could print your slides, the two by two matrix would be perfect to have a hard hard copy of. All of your slides are full of detail, did you create them?

Hello Mike thanks for sharing, is the LMTD method only valid for counter or parallel flow? or can be also use for cross-flow?

I don't think I have a separate video showing that case. But I think the big take away I tried to get students to have from these videos is the process for solving these problems. If you go through the same process described here, I think that you should be able to come up with a reasonable solution. So the path won't be exactly the same as this one, but if you watch this, and then maybe the Exhaust gas (mixed / unmixed) video, I think you should be able to piece together a good model.

So that's a bit beyond what we're doing in a video like this. I think you start with trying to size the heat exchanger. Then, you probably have some kind of size constraints in your system. That might lead you to choose how many tubes you want. The interesting thing about heat exchanger design is that there are multiple solutions to the same problem. So you probably want to create some kind of model / solver that lets you determine the heat transfer. Then play around with variables (i.e. what is the length if I pick N tubes with D diameter?; or how many tubes would I need if I have a length L and tube diameters of D?). My understanding of header design is that you want something that gives you as close to uniform flow rates as you can get in all of your tubes (or cross sectional area)...so it's a multidimensional fluids problem.

Good catch. Looks like there is a typo in the slide here and it should be C_h. I think I say this when narrating the slide, but have it written incorrectly on the slide. Thanks for pointing this out and sorry for the confusion.
