When working on a cross stitched piece it's important to support your work and keep it taught, but are embroidery hoops the only... or even the best way to do it? In this video I talk about my favorite ways to support my work while stitching.

I've only ever used a hoop and I hate them. The creases are maddening and I can never get it tight enough. Deffinatly going to get myself one of those PVC frames to try. Thanks Phil

I've wanted one of those frames but I mostly do very small projects. Thanks for the info on the scrolling frame though, pretty cool for bigger projects!

Ah, yea I usually don't use anything to hold my work when making small projects. Of course that means I'm always touching the Aida, but most of my small projects are things like bookmarks that will be touched all the time when they're finished anyway.

I like the Q-snaps too. I purchased some fabric Grime Guards that cover the part you hold to protect the stitching fabric from the oils.

Thanks for the video. I have used the PVC pipe frames for years, especially when I do my needlepoint projects. Your video re-minded me about them, because I was needing something to hold my embroidery in. I never thought about the PVC pipe. Thanks for your neat video.

Thanks for such helpful info, your ladybug video helped me get started with cross stitching. I just finished a large piece & the marks from the hoop are terrible. I’m scared to wash it, as I’m not sure the procedure to use. Next time you wash A finished piece, could you please post a video of how you do it? Thanks a bunch!

You can also slide the outer things off the Q-snap. I find it easier than trying to pull them off

I don't bother with a hoop or a frame... I hold the fabric in my hand and roll it as I go XD But I am considering getting a frame for giant pieces!

What exactly is the point of the hoop? Do you even have to use a hoop or frame or anything?
@darlahardy3386

They make extensions for the Q Snap frames now. Try to stick with the brand Q Snap because they won't slip off your work. It looks like he's using Q Snap in this video.

Hi, new subscriber here! I enjoy your videos a lot. They are very informative. I have a question: I'm cross stitching a huge piece and I've been using a medium hoop (not wood). The indentations are really noticeable when I move the hoop to a new area. My question is, will this HUGE indentations disappear when I wash it and iron it? I'm not sure if I should ditch the hoop. I'd hate to have marks on it. Any advice? Thanks.
@PhilsNextKick
@PhilsNextKick Год назад
Yes, washing and Ironing should help, but also if you are going for long periods between stitching, don't leave your piece in the hoop like I tend to do. That will make the creases a bit more difficult to get out. Also, if you aren't already, try to remember to wash your hands before stitching to keep as much finger oils and other things that might be on your hands from staining your work. In my experience these stains tend to gather on those creases from holding the hoop.

You mentioned washing off skin oils and ironing out creases - are those steps super important? If so, what do you use to wash it?
@PhilsNextKick
@PhilsNextKick 3 года назад
I'll have a video on this sometime in the next week or two, but generally I wash mine in slightly warm water with a mild soap (I just use blue dawn) by submerging it in the soapy water and swishing it around. For any possible stains use a soft toothbrush. Press the wet piece in a towel to dry and then lay on an ironing board with a cloth on top and iron through the cloth with the heat on low. All of this does has benefits that I will cover in the video, but in the end it's your piece and you get to choose what you do with it!

@@PhilsNextKick just a FYI.. you should iron it right side down into a towel so the stitches don't flatten out.

I like the frames except they are sooooooooo hard to remove your work. so I have gone back to the round hoop
@PhilsNextKick
@PhilsNextKick 2 года назад
To me it's all based on your preference. I really like the idea behind the scrolling frame, but my work tends to loosen too much while I stitch. I probably like the pvc frames better than hoops because they give me a little more room to work than the round hoop does, but I know one size doesn't always fit all.

The frames are called Q-snaps. They're quite popular so you can probably find some online. If your aida is bigger than your frame, you can fold it over and keep it in place with a grime guard (a piece of fabric for around the frame)
@pai009
@pai009 9 месяцев назад
If you already have one or more of the frames, why can't you just make the frame its self and reuse the parts that hold the fabric on the frame you made? All you'd need to make sure is that the pvc pipe is the same as the frame the clamps came from.
