You are right it does seem like a solution to a problem that does not really exist. But one thought or something I realized by watching you showcase the three is that having the diagonal peen hammer saves you having to have two separate hammers in relation to how you are holding the piece to be worked by using tongs.
The French hammer that you have is the equivalent of a ball pein hammer, "marteau rivoir" a riveting hammer. I use them (I live in France) for forging as I have them! Regards, Matthew

Hello. Using playdoh to demonstrate the principle of moving metal with a hammer is genius. And having a play anvil for your daughter is very cool. Also, good informative video.
Good stuff Brandon !! the only thing i can figure about the right and left peens is, some folks are just to lazy to turn either the work or their hammer, hahaha. Looking forward to the other videos in the series. maybe Santa will bring the girls some more play-doh...
thanks for the great info, couple questions, the other side of the cross peen would that be considered to be a flatter or a rounding hammer or could you dress it anyway you want? what would one use a brass or bronze hammer for? like what you was explain in the video ? I have a box full of them they are pretty soft, need to be dresses, and they are 1-2 lbs each
hey Greg, to start you may sharpen (the term for domeing a hammer face) the face of a cross/straight/diagonal peen to suit your needs. A rounding hammer is a specific style of hammer with a domed face on one side and a very flat face on the other. A Flatter is a struck tool with flat face, the face is usually larger than the body of the flatter but not always. Long story short dress the hammer face to suite your needs, most of my faces have a slight dome. Brass and bronze hammers are used when either you don't want to marr what you are hitting or you can't make a spark. Two examples would be tweeking a finished scroll and working in a natural gas pumping facility! They are great to have in the rack, copper and leather as well! Hope this helps.

I had the same thing happen to me! I was holding a splitting mual for my dad and it came off the 8lb sledge hammer he was swinging! Still have it in my arm today! Over 40 yrs ago

Usually I use the one to the left of my body, but sometimes I hold it between my legs! Sometimes I have a helper hold it and sometimes I use a hold-down.
