If the leg room wasn't bad enough, on your walk through the train, we find some plonker who thinks they can place their suit case in the isle !!!. Nice work, keep it up.

Yup, some people really have no common sense. Although, considering the size of the racks provided, it does make sense.

I remember when I first saw these on the train to Cambridge back in the day when I lived in Essex, I was so impressed by how much nicer they were compared to the 317s I normally rode at the time (I was like "how is this diesel train so much more modern than the electrics"); it was the train that got me into trains!

I haven't tried the cross country turbostars but use the Scotrail ones on a regular basis and I have got to confess that I quite like them. Usually try to get the priority row near the entrance which has much better legroom. Would always move if someone needed it.

The trains themselves are fine but for many years they would be packed to the rafters! A two-car train often showed up on ridiculously busy services on the Cambridge - Peterborough - Leicester - Birmingham line which was nowhere near enough. But using 170s now around Northern is quite enjoyable, and I agree with you about the priority seat

@@moose_ringo9161 Oh tell me about it! I was on a ScotRail class 170 just a few weeks ago, and at peak time, there were only three carriages! I had to stand with my suitcase squished against the door because I couldn't get through to the luggage rack. This was during a 50% reduction in service, you would've thought they would couple two sets together since they had some spare trains, but nope! Doesn't seem to be a problem unique to one operator
@artfuldodger4850
@artfuldodger4850 3 года назад
Very interested in this journey as I know the route and the rolling stock well. You were lucky in travelling when you did, because my experience is that these trains are usually busy. Get 3 or 4 adults travelling together with their obligatory two large suitcases each plus hand luggage and you can guess there isn’t much room for the other 50 passengers. Never understood why Cross Country, as the name suggests covers from Penzance to Aberdeen, operates trains with 2/3 carriages with the 170s and 4/5 carriages on the long haul 220/221s. Pre-Covid travel on XC was a nightmare. Shame really because it is the main provider of routes travelled as its name suggests. They try hard with very limited resources.

I travelled on this service back in 2019 and to be fair the trains were good, but as you said leg room is very bad if you are tall. The train I took was a 3 car unit and packed, I paid £24 (purchased the day before at New Street as no cheaper tickets offered online) and it was the only time I wished for a Voyager as I felt cramped on the train (like you I am over 6 foot). I was glad that the return train was not as busy.

Another shout for Tamworth, it should be noted that historically Tamworth was the capital of Kingdom of Mercia. line/platform you were on crosses the West Coast Main Line which passes underneath and a lot of interchange of passengers. so its just not Reliant cars ( including Scimitars).

I've used these trains on occasions since Friday 26th May 2006. As of now, I think they're extremely reliable trains! I could be wrong but if the Avanti West Coast Voyagers transfer to CrossCountry then I believe the Cardiff to Nottingham services could be operated by Voyagers if the Birmingham to Nottingham and Leicester local services are run by another operator. Voyagers on Cardiff to Nottingham services mean InterCity trains and more of an InterCity service rather than regional! Also don't forget the Voyagers have plug sockets which the XC 170's only have in First Class. As a result, 170's will increase capacity on the Stansted Airport routes. That would be an interesting move 🙂.

As a local to Nottingham, I have travelled on these units very often, and overall I find them very disappointing. I frequently see 2 car sets being put on the Nottingham to Cardiff route, and they are often overflowing and people sometimes cannot even get on the train. *I have had to sit in a luggage rack before* , I have seen one one of the folding seats almost fall off the wall. The seats are very tired, the interior quality is appalling, with scrapes, cracks and general wear and tear not being looked after properly. The tray tables rattle uncontrollably and the prices are outrageous. They charge £18 for a 14 mile journey (Even with a railcard). I always try to avoid the cross country 170s as much as possible.

Not just in the bathroom mirror. I do appreciate your showing that pitiful leg room. My hubby would have a bear of a time. Those other cars seemed packed with travelers. As you walk from car to car, the aisles look a bit tight. I'm disabled. I'd be bumping into everyone as I go. That suitcase in the aisle doesn't work either. All in all, one more enjoyable trip. Thanks for another cool travel video. If you don't mind my asking I have noticed over the course of your british rail videos that it seems to be far more common there for rail lines to not be electrified compared to Germany. Is that indeed the case and if so, why? Over here electrification of existing lines is pretty much always ongoing and it's the precondition for any long distance service by now, with very few exceptions. Also if you like to see a collection of weird old rolling stock check out the new-ish InterCity line from Dresden to Warnemünde via Berlin and Neustrelitz. Near the latter station there's a rail graveyard with some cool looking stuff. Also this line is operated by 4 car long double decker EMUs making them Germany's shortest long distance trains. Don't know who had that bright idea as - I kid you not! - a few weeks ago the conductor asked for some passengers to volontarily leave the train as it was overcrowded and couldn't continue ... for safety reasons... 😅🤦‍♂️

I never quite worked out why there was never a regional variant of the Turbostar. Unless Central Trains who operated these regional services back in the day, and which XC inherited, specified this configuration so that there was one standard variant of the 170 for both their commuter and regional services. And it shows in the layout, not great for long distance.

Reminds me of the current gaps in my life, been to Birmingham by train many times, much easier than driving especially as the Dartford road crossings are so unreliable. As a very vulnerable person I cannot use public transport if there are unmasked others about. Hopefully come 2022 things will improve. Also, shame about the closure of the John Lewis department store, hope the site will be given a new lease of life soon.

Enjoyable ride with beautiful weather. However, the narrow legroom isn't for me 😵 (2m tall). Thanks for sharing ☺️

Maybe Crosscountry could operate from Norwich and Stansted Airport to Leeds, York, Lincoln, Cardiff Central, Nottingham, Birmingham New Street, Derby, Sheffield, Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street. With using Class 170 Turbostar DMUs.

I live in Leicester, On the Stansted Airport-Birmingham corridor and I've gotta say that for me, The XC 170s are the worst out of all the 170s, The interior is cramped, Overcrowding is rife, Legroom is non existent (as you pointed out) and tickets are not cheap. Me and my wife refuse to travel on Cross Country when possible.

Mixed feelings about these trains. They are decent regional trains but have defects in passenger amenities. For example, no plug sockets and they are undercapacity for the routes they do, they are NEVER joined up which means you could be on a 2 car from Cardiff to Nottingham! And I found they were crowded every time I rode on one. On the up side, the seats are comfortable, not including legroom, and the air conditioning makes it a bit more pleasant especially when crowded.

Even for a short ride, I think the seat pitch was a little unreasonable. As you walked through, it seemed quite a bit cramped.

"...the Beer in Britain is Brewed in Burton". Okkkay... BTW It could be that the luggage stacks are carpeted to prevent rolling around of luggage. (spoken from bitter experience!)

Great Ryan Air comment! The leg room looked miserable and the width of the passenger aisle seemed very narrow. Are those smaller cars?

Value engineering: the DMU edition. A 5 coach HST or even a 158 Express Sprinter would've made this a nicer ride.

First, let me lament the passing of John Lewis at Grand Central. Also note these trains have decent a/c which was great in the summer (compared to the 323s, one of which was at platform 12 when you got on at BHM)

Could you test the 195s on Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly

I love the 170s, but the CrossCountry and West Midlands Railways examples are horrible. I didn’t know what a good class 170 looked like until I used one of ScotRail's examples
