This video really helped me! Been trying to figure out the hand-stand pushup for the past few days, and it turned out I was just too close to the wall. I backed up a bit, and did 2-3 in a row. Progress!

The Kip is an efficiency movement to conduct more reps in a shorter amount of time. I will produce the same results if I did strict Hand Stand Push Ups with less reps. CrossFit talks about Power output and if you remember a little physics/chemistry from high school, power equals force x distance over time, thus I want to decrease the distance over time utilizing the body's force and I produce more power!!!!! CrossFit doesn't want to cheat movements but make it more efficient. But I won't hate on someone who wants to do all gym work strict. Don't hate what you don't know and understand!

Because in competition; the value is placed on task completion, not on muscle growth. The task is to do many reps, not to hypertrophy the working muscles. This is the reason the video is entitled "efficiency tips" as opposed to muscle/strength gaining tips. Please pay attention to the words I have chosen before trolling me. That will answer all your queries on kipping and why it's used, regardless of the movement in question.

+MrStuBStu This makes sense in a competitory sense. I think a lot of people are viewing this videos thinking it is just basic technique not crossfit competition advice. In that regard, slow and controlled is generally better.
@danschmidt5189
@danschmidt5189 8 лет назад
+MrStuBStu Many reps with moderate resistance is a hypertrophy protocol. Maximum strength gains are made with short sets and near-1RM intensity, and in that case (with low time under tension but high recruitment) most gains are neurological. There's a reason CrossFitters tend to look beefy - lots of reps makes you beefy.

That's funny. We've been doing it the same way for 100 years with sound results, naturally, and unnaturally. Why in the world would we even bother to dislike this video? It's an interesting and challenging thing to do(Master your own bodyweight), the only people that would dislike are people that complain about dislikes in the comments.

They are doing the kipping weird. I just did 2 full classes of this today. I did "Diane" 21, 15, 9 in under 8 minutes. The kipping is crucial. And a slow knee bend before the pushoff is important, in my opinion.

If your goal is a freestanding hspu, don't do it with your back facing the wall Do it with your belly facing the wall for proper form, better range of motion and safety

Yes. It can hurt your wrists because the push-up puts pressure and a high degree of flexing on your wrist. You can mitigate this by doing the handstand push-ups gripping some heavy dumb bells so that you're not flexing your wrist. Also, work on your wrist flexibility. Check out some of these MWod videos. mobilitywod(dot)com/2011/01/episode-145-wrist-flexibility.html mobilitywod(dot)com/2011/04/episode-236-overhead-wrist-dysfunction.html

It takes more than just balance. It uses a lot of core strength to do it freestanding. It just takes time and practice. I can do about 5 freestanding handstand push ups now. Guess you could say I have a lot of free time lol.

This is technically a headstand push up, not a hand stand push up.
@onceuponthecross1
@onceuponthecross1 11 лет назад
actually elbows out is easier because the medial delts and traps are contributing more
@WeskerUmbrella4
@WeskerUmbrella4 11 лет назад
Isn't there 2 variations to this type of push up? Headstand and a handstand push up. This is a headstand, where the top of your head touches the ground and the other type is where kick your head back a little so that you can go all the way down, shoulders to the level of your palms. However, this is a propper technique, shoulders should be tucked in and not flared out. The improper technique gives you a little bit more strength but it hurts the shoulder joint.
@nwman1234
@nwman1234 10 лет назад
Strict pull ups should be trained first because they develop the strength needed to complete other gymnastics movements! But the kipping pull up is a way to be more efficient in your movement's when pure strength isn't the goal. A bodybuilder would never want to do anything but strict pull ups, but us crossfiters aren't just interested in strength. There are 9 other facets of physical fitness out there and kipping/butterfly will hit the other ones, including cardiovascular health, speed, accuracy, and endurance. It's a pull up that doesn't specialize in strength because sticking to one of those facets won't allow for an efficient accomplishment of the task, you need all of them to do that.

yeah its a bit jarring being upside down on only your hands and takes a while to get used to even when you are up against a wall and the constant tension of your entire body weight and the awkward position tour arms need to be in also takes a hell of a lot of strength considering most people cant even press half their weight above their head.

is there a risk of stroke in the long term in terms of doing any decline exercises like this - straining while blood rushing to the head? i've heard yes's and no's from different people. i would think as long as you breathe right (and don't have high blood pressure or detached retina/s) that things like this would be safe. am i right?
@drdavidfranco
@drdavidfranco 7 лет назад
TeslaDRay As a physician, I can safely say there is no real increase in stroke risk by doing this. The only exception that comes to mind would be if you have a large cerebral aneurysm, in which case this exercise would be a bad idea.

No one is an asshole for disliking something. If that is all it takes for the crossfit croud to get offened, just dislike something... then this sport does not produce toughness.
@rawbyproductions
@rawbyproductions 11 лет назад
People who know that extending through the spine does not reduce range of motion in the arms, it just makes it easier and less effective. Also, people certainly do shoulder presses with arms at the side with dumbbells, it just targets the medial delts more. The kipping technique is dumb and dangerous. Feet should definitely wrap around the straps or you'll fall like he did, but you can still use very little help from the legs but be safer. No reason why CrossFit increases risk without benefit.

From a functional standpoint, I don't understand why you do handstand push-ups without a full range of motion. For a competition: fine (only applicable for CrossFit?). For anything else: full ROM means you must elevate your hands so that your head cannot hit the floor. Try parallets. Adding a hip/leg movement reduces the load on the arms and does not work your hips in a productive manner. #Don'tCheatYourself

Your hands should be about a foot from the wall. Keep your butt and stomach tight and straight. The only point of contact on the wall should be the heels of your feet. If your back is rubbing against the wall, it is probably because your form is collapsing as you push.

@selbig007
@selbig007 8 лет назад
Charles R, crossfit is all about intensity. If you can kip a handstand push-up, you will do them faster.
@cmep
@cmep 8 лет назад
selbig007 Doing faster shouldn't be the point. Doing them correctly should be. The key to doing a fast handstand push up is core strength, upper body strength, balance (no wall) and learning to do a handstand. I just don't like cross fit because it is a bunch of difficult exercises, all taught in a manner that is easy to mess up, normally taught to intermediate to beginner level athletes. In the end you get 95% of the group that mistakes done for done correctly, and swollen for strength. Cross fit is a great business, but horrible fitness model for the average person.

Title says handstand push up. But in reality THE handstand push up is done with no wall to lean on and no head to stand on. But since it's Crossfit you'd expect them to mess it up. You know kind of like they confuse humping the bar with an actual pull up. The handstand push up is a gymnastic move. This is a wall leaning headstand sort of push up. Crossfit. False labelling stuff from the start.

Well, he did introduce kipping with "Kipping...again... is something that, for an athlete who maybe has a bunch of strict handstand pushups, could resort to as they got more fatigued. Or, for you bigger guys, it might be something you go to after 5 or 6 reps. So you need to know how to do it, regardless where you are." So it seems the focus, at least for the Coach here, is still on being able to do them strict first.
