Harsh and I stood in neighboring doors to capture our train cross the mighty Ganga on the 2.24 km Farakka barrage. I observed water gushing through the opened sluice gates. A few minutes after that, we went through New Farakka station and then negotiated a huge curve to cross the feeder canal. This connects to the Hoogly river and is about 40 km long. Note the line from Azimganj-Ballarpur joining us from the left just before the feeder bridge. Feel free to check out the layout here - wikimapia.org/#... .

Beautifully shot... Remember crossing Farakka river by a steamer when the bridge was not there in 1968, on a trip to Darjeeling. 😊

My grandfather was the Chief Engineer of the Farakka Barrage project. My aunts and mother grew up watching the project start to finish. I was able to spend few years of my childhood here in Farakka, remember going into the control room with my grandfather and being mesmerised by the control panel. My grandfather is no more, but he lives through these videos for me.Thanks for making me revisit my childhood 😊

Remember going by train to Siliguri from Sealdah about 55 Years back ! There was no bridge over Ganges at Farakka at that time ! One had to ferry across Ganges and than change to other train waiting o take passengers to Siliguri ! Times have really changed !

You must have started your journey on a broad gauge train, then switched over to metre gauge after the ferry journey, right?

Traveled on this route countless times during my childhood days while staying in Jalpaiguri. Brought back lovely memories. Always enjoyed this marvelous build.

Very nice to hear that. When did you live in Jalpaiguri? What routes did you usually travel on at that time? My first room-mate in graduate school (in US) is from Jalpaiguri - Sujit Bhowmick. He used to tell me all kinds of interesting stories.
@priyamganguly
@priyamganguly 4 года назад
We used to live there in the 80s. My father was posted there. It was such a neat and quiet town beside the Teesta river. People were so friendly then. No apartment culture was there at that time. There was a warm coherence among the neighbourhoods. So we used to visit neighbours' and relatives' places frequently and watch Ramayan, Mahabharat and Chitrahaar together on Doordarshan. My schooling started there. I was a student of Holy Child School run by the Missionaries. As Jalpaiguri was close to the hills, we used to have outings to the mountains every month. And once a year, we used to have that grand picnic from my father's office in the hills and forests of Dooars, including Bhutan. One of my father's friends was tea garden audit inspector. By that virtue, we had the opportunity to visit numerous tea gardens and experience the best hospitalities of the gardens, that's probably unavailable to the outsiders. By the grace of one of my uncles, who was a forest officer, we got to tread deep into the Lataguri jungles twice. The wonder years of my childhood!
@priyamganguly
@priyamganguly 4 года назад
Regarding rail routes, we enjoyed the ride from Siliguri to Darjeeling on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. We also traveled up till the border of Bangladesh at Haldibari, that's around an hour from Jalpaiguri town. From NJP, we traveled up to New Alipurduar. There used to be a metre gauge route around Coochbehar. I experienced my metre gauge ride there. There's another route from NJP that goes to Alipur Duar Junction traversing through the greeneries of Dooars, tea gardens and the foothills of the Himalayas that included Sevok, New Mal Junction, Hasimara, Raja Bhat Khawa, etc. All these are significant points of the Dooars forest. At that time, all these routes were dominated by mighty & huge steam locomotives, along with WDM-2 locos with the quintessential 80's livery. Now, these routes are dotted with modern DEMU rakes as well as ALCOs from MLDT and EMDs from SGUJ. My knack on railfanning started from this point of time, instilled by my father.

@@priyamganguly Wow! That sounds like the perfect childhood. And Dooars is simply an amazing place to be close to.

@@priyamganguly That is just great to hear. How I wish I had visited that section when MG was still alive? I can only imagine the legendary AT and Assam Mails running through Sevok, New Mal, Binnaguri, etc. During my 2013 sojourn, I did cover the remaining MG sections south of Lumding. Also, did Capital Exp. from Kamakhya to NJP and then the Shatabdi to Howrah.

I think ganga become widest before entering bangladesh . My grandmother from Chandpur in bangladesh used to tell us story of padma(ganga) aboot its sheer size. It used to resemble ocean after two mightest river Ganga and bramhaputra joining and creating a mega river.

It was then when I was kid and travelling from Guwahati to Howrah. I don't remember the train name. It was day time and rainy season. Our train was crossing Farakka the great barrage. Suddenly our train stops on the bridge. It was completely in middle of the bridge. Nature was killingly silent. But water beneath bridge was making deadly noise. My father shown me that scenario. Barrage was almost full and doors were opened. Just imagine the running water with full force. That image still haunts me. I am still scared of The great Farakka.

Your govt and people raped the mother Ganga. The river is filled with silts all over the river due to dam. Floods occurs frequently because of that reason. Before the dam the water level in Varanasi was 7-8m deep and now 2-4m deep full of shits , dead bodies half burnt, dead animals and sewage from 300 cities and the water is not potable and unfit for take a holly bath too. This dam has brought more harms than goods intended too, means punish Bangladesh
