This song was impeccably performed. The crowd singing along (most of whom probably weren't born for another decade after the song's release) is magic. That shows you how music can truly be timeless.
In 2000, My Dad was terminally ill with lung cancer. One day we'd been out for a drive and I was taking him back to the hospice and I had this playing on a tape in the car. He'd never heard it before but he listened several times and absolutely loved it. I had it played at his funeral, very moving. I've only recently been able to listen it again....
I was watching this video, which I adore, and watching Neil look over with so much love at his son, who is playing the echoey fill guitar here, and I was imagining Neil having a few words with the audience, about telling your family members just how much you love them, and encouraging the audience to do the same. Especially parents and children. And I was thinking about my 28 year old daughter, who I told just this morning how much I care about her, and how wonderful I think she is. Then I read your comment. Something going on here. Peace and love.
My Dad also died of lung cancer, in his early 50's (myself in my early 20's at the time). This song randomly played in a cafe recently and I was transported back to our old home and his cassette copy of this album, that would often be playing. A bittersweet mixture of sadness and loving memories.
So sorry for your lost of your dad. Beautiful testimony of how much he loved this song and how you had it played at his funeral. God Bless you for that.
me, i love this, always makes me sad though this song, When Queen Elizabeth died the radio channels here in the UK played loads of sad music and I remember I was in a taxi and this was playing as we went past a billboard with the Queen on, so anytime I hear this I am gonna think of the Queen
Neil Finn is a Master Volcalist. Crowded House rocks to no end!🎉🎉I'm 66 years old now anf and grew up listening to the best rock and roll music 🎶 in the world 🎶 👌
@@marklandau365 Currently, I think, 3 New Zealanders, 1 Australian, 1 US - but aside from that, Crowded House _is_ essentially Neil Finn (since he has virtually all the writing credits) plus whomever he choses to play with at the time
Split Enz is a Kiwi band and I actually prefer that music to Crowded House more so...but both are very good .... Te Awamutu can be found only in Aotearoa...
The 43 year old me remains a hopeless romantic thanks to listening to songs like these when I was 8 years old. The 80's heartbreak songs were my nighttime lullabies.
It's funny bc I'm currently playing this for my two babies.. I play oldies every night as a routine after bedtime stories.. we're not rich but I hope these are the memories they'll hold on to
This is how seasoned bands should perform. No need to gyrate for the masses. Play it as clean as you can and sing as clear as you can BC the music is good enough to stand on it's own merit. Gives me hope to see younglings being so accepting of music not from their generation but still recognizing when it's done right, it's good enough on it's own.
Neil Finn's voice is just magical. I really appreciate the videos he made at his home studio during lockdown. Crowded House are a spiritual uplift during difficult times.
Generations are now singing this song out loud at concerts. Awesome. We just saw them in Berlin on Monday last week and it was amazing as well. Neil Finn is a LEGEND!!
A true Trans-Tasman Legend - the Concert in Berlin was AMAZING - so heart warming … Their new stuff is great too - with regards to overall entertainment they have never been more relaxed and any better than now. Will have to take a bunch of friends when they come around next time to Germany
@@Itsallillusional oh yes thats so true for me Neil is the hottest man alive and such a good dancer and so full of amazing energy. I only noticed the band 2 years ago and am so very thankful for that.
35 years has passed since I heard this song for the first time and still moves every cell in my body. It is my favorite song of all time. Neil Finn is a master genius!
@@chambatips3619That's the beauty about music. You are not obligated to like every group. So, anything you say about Crowded House doesn't affect the love I feel for their music. Greetings!
I have to admit..I've loved this song since I heard it the day it was released...but this version just got me choked up. Wow...so subtle...so melancholy...so amazing. Neil and band...you continue to surprise!!! Dig, DmGrk
@@BarryAlexanderKing It reminds me of when I was barely elementary age tagging along with my high-school aged brother, going to the comic book store and bothering him at band rehersals, lol
Love seeing Neil’s sons on the lead guitar and drums! Couldn’t have been better additions to the band than his sons who are not only big fans of their dad’s music but also great musicians. RIP Paul Hester 😢😢😢
Yea.its great. But if you notice. This song is played in a differnt key every time I watch a video..he is just versatile enough to sing a song he wrote in any key.
One of the very best songs ever written. I remember watching them playing it many years ago at what I believed was their “farewell” gig on New Years Eve at Sydney Opera House and how much of an impression it made on me. Loved it ever since.
@@simonhodgetts6530 It is. And a few years later he wrote "Fall at Your Feet", then, "Private Universe" shortly after that! How many people have written as many absolute killers as Neil?
Neil Finn you ever dream you would be singing the song don't dream its over in 2022 at Glastonbury your voice still holds up Brother keep the faith blessings always.
LOrd give me 10 seconds of the satisfaction of leaving something so timeless and amazing behind when i go as this song. Just breathtaking how easily it transports me back.
I am instantly decades younger! That is why I love music so much. In a few seconds and for a few minutes I can almost be immortal by being 30 or 40 years my younger self all the time!!! I am so glad that music does that for me.... I'm sure I'm not the only one but Damm if I don't love it when it happens!
I always feel a sense of sadness whenever I see and hear live versions of this song. I have seen the Crowdies live throughout the last 30 plus years and go through their line up changes and now it’s a blessing to hear Mitchell, Liam and Elroy recreating that original sound. It has to be said that I still bloody miss Paul Hester.
Absolutely. I've got about a dozen songs still now that trigger me instantly to think of him bouncing around at the back. It feels so so long ago yet sometimes feels like yesterday.. crazy really.
Neil Finn is a bloody treasure...this is music kids...One of the greatest songs ever, by one of the greatest ever singer/songwriters. I remember listening to this for the first time as a 17yr old in Marton, NZ in '86 and thinking this song could be anything....and it was....
Neil Finn has such a distinct and clear voice it’s sooooo incredibly uplifting and soothing, you can always pick it out of the crowd of even the Greats 👍👍👍
His voice is timeless, he still sounds every bit as good today as he did all those years ago. Took me a long time to appreciate this song, I thought it was about the downfall of a relationship, but I was wrong. It's the polar opposite, it's about a relationship surviving the ups and downs. Neil Finn, keep performing this classic, we need more uplifting pieces like this. Thank you.
In 1989, at the tender age of 8, I dubbed over my sister's New Kids On The Block cassette so I could record a mixtape for a girl named Megan. It's one of my most vivid childhood memories. This song always hits me hard.
What makes this song so perfect? I have heard this 10000x since it came out, and it makes me emotional every single time, without fail. There's nothing particularly complex about it, and I couldn't name another Crowded House song, but add my name to the list who say it's their favorite, all-time, hands-down.
There is freedom within There is freedom without Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup There's a battle ahead Many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're travelling with me … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win … Now I'm towing my car There's a hole in the roof My possessions are causing me suspicion But there's no proof In the paper today Tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the TV page … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win … Now I'm walking again To the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead Barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and release … Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us You know they won't win … Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now) Hey now, hey now Hey now, hey now Don't let them win (They come, they come) Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now), yeah Hey now, hey now
@@pmoorepmkmoore3377 You said it. I have all of split enz discography and of course crowded house. One of my all time faves is the lesser known "dirty creatures" by split enz.
@@bornflippy1 yes one of my faves by split enz, I had the enz of an era best of cassette from 1982 which featured dirty creature, and last time I was in Australia in 1989 I saw split enz/crowded house live at darling harbour in Sydney, great memories 😊🇳🇿🇦🇺🎸
i dont think we give these guys enough credit! they sound amazing for having performed this song for so many years. over a decade ago and he still has such an amazing voice
This just proves that this song is a classic. It never gets old and seems to get better with age. God bless Neil Finn, he's a great person and wonderful performer!
God bless the 80’s when I was 15 to 25 years old and I enjoyed every single year with My Mother, Father, and only Brother that are All dead now but They live in My Mind . This is one of My favorite songs. Thanks to Casey Cason and American Top 40’s every Saturday afternoon where I was very into Music and also Mtv because wasn’t Internet yet and the Teenagers watch Videos, go to Disco Parties, Discotheque Clubs, and Concerts here in Puerto Rico even been under 18 years old. The Decade from 1980 to 1990 was the Best Years of all kind of Music from the Best Artists. The new Music cannot compare to My 80’s Music.
My deceased brother spoke to me through this song. It's how he communicates with me. Thanks for posting the vid..my heart has once again been magically touched by my brother through an old song! 🙏😌
I rarely do this but I sincerely appreciate what you wrote about yourself and your love for my music that shows that you are really a nice person to be with in person.. where are you streaming from,?
This live version of this Classic song might among the best I've ever heard from one of the all-time BEST bands! So happy that they're still performing and recording 36 years after their first record came out. If you haven't heard 'DREAMERS ARE WAITING' from last year (2021), do yourself a huge favor and go listen in it's entirety.
What a beautiful redition of this classoc song. Neil Finn is one of he greatest musicians in history, songwriting and performance. The fact that his two sons are in the band and rock this song makes me fall in love with my childhood again. Ive met Liam and Elory multiple times when Liam was touring for himself (gracious and wonderful people) and I am smiling ear to ear watching this video.
I’m 58 and remember when this song came out in the 80s. Truly never gets old. But what gives me chills is seeing these youngsters singing the worlds. And hearing that crowd. Man life goes too fast folks!!!!!
Hearing this song now for the first time in ages is like bumping into a beautiful old friend that I haven't seen in years and whom I had forgotten how much I love 😊😓
i’m so happy glastonbury is back and this is the first song that i hear from the show. looking forward to hear more from artists that i’ve never known before and want to find out more about their music.
Neil - what a guy. An inspiration for me and our band in NZ way back in the early 70's when he was opening for the Enz . . . so cool to see him up where he belongs in front of the best audience in the world :)
DÉCADA DE 80 FOI UMA DÉCADA DE OURO !!! MÚSICAS QUE FORAM TRILHA SONORA DE UMA GERAÇÃO FELIZ, QUE PODIA BRINCAR NA RUA, QUE OS VIZINHOS CUIDAVAM UM DOS FILHOS DOS OUTROS, QUE HAVIA RESPEITO PELOS OUTROS E QUE ACIMA DE TUDO, TINHA MEUS PAIS VIVOS !!! MUITA SAUDADE DELES !!!
Momentos ímpares, dias iluminados, felizes que mostraram que o dia era interminável, a doçura de escutar junto aos pais, amigos, músicas que traz uma paz de espírito
the funny thing is out of ALL of the people I saw perform at Glastonbury this year - these chaps were the only ones whose voices felt like old friends and warmed my heart in a way that took me out of myself - thanks guys
