One thing that often is overlooked when discussed is the length of this event. The award ceremony starts at four in the afternoon and the banquet with the following private reception for the laureates rarely finishes before two at night. That means that the royal lady’s are starting to get their hair done around lunchtime. So for the Nobel price the female members of the royal family are in tiaras for at least twelve hours.......thats more than the length of three state banquets. One must wonder about the relief the ladies feel once the hairpins are finally taken out and the weight of the tiara is removed.

A fact about Sofias tiara, it was not bought for her but "made", it started out as a necklace that the queen was given from a prince in the in the Thai royal family and for the wedding the Swedish king and queen sent it to jewellers in Thailand that remade it into a tiara. And another thing, the kings mom is not named Silvia (that's his wife) her name is Sibylla (Sibylle)

Tiara Secret: ladies who may not have thick hair use hair pieces on the top of their heads that will secure the tiara (think braids that act as a platform/base for the tiara) or a “fall” that is used to hide the back of the tiara. Princess Sophie’s red gown had been made for her while she was pregnant so had to accommodate a changing body - the top and the length of the skirt in front. The new style is more flattering.

I think that the Swedish RF has a lot of French connections also because of the first king and queen of Sweden after the 1830s, because there was no heir before and since they were afraid to be invaded by other countries, they told to a French soldier, Bernadotte (I don’t know why they chose him), to become the new Heir to the throne with his wife. So Bernadotte and Desiree are the beginning of the now Swedish RF, so it makes sense that some jewels have connections to France, also because the couple was CLOSE to the Emperor of the French.

I love jewelry. Most of the women in my family does. We have a close relationship with the jeweler whom we have been going to for over 30 years. My dad loved adding to each of our collections. He was researching costume tiaras after my daughter became princess of our Sons of Norway lodge. We received a box of tiaras, most of them were not in very good condition. Dad said that they were ugly and jumped on the computer and he was hunting for something that he liked and hoped that my daughter would like. Yes, he spoiled her. We found a tiara that was similar to what we were given, but kept it.

@jonasviking9768
@jonasviking9768 9 месяцев назад
It’s more or less impossible to give one definite answer to your question, there are simply too many factors that play in here. Like when was the tiara in question construed, what hairstyle and length of hair does the lady have. The easiest way to get a clue to how the piece in question is fixed to the hairstyle is to find out when the pice of jewelry was made and then look for portraits dating from the same time. The tiaras was made to fit the hairstyle and fashion of it’s day and that’s the reason some tiaras look so strange in modern hairstyles. Some of the most obvious examples are the edwardian tiaras that are meant to be worn in a large poofy gibson-girl hairstyle (some prime examples in the swedish RF collection are the six button tiara and the edwardian ruby tiara). Often the older (early 19th century) tiaras was made to be sitting on a braid close to the wearers scalp and then sown to the braid, later in the century threading sections of hair throuh the tiara base and more or less braid the tiara into the hairstyle became more popular........i can go on and on but I guess i have already been harping on for far to long.
@FinnishLapphund
@FinnishLapphund 9 месяцев назад
As the other reply says, it probably varies a bit from tiara to tiara, but I think the short answer is usually simply hairpins in different angles, and/or in combination with how the hair is styled as a base for the tiara. As I understand it, the fabric at the base of at least some tiaras, which e.g. is mentioned being of the wrong colour for Princess Madeleine's then blond hair at 17:51, can be/are used as something to attach/hook a hairpin to before the hairpin goes into the hair. But maybe I've gotten that all wrong, or it's only done with some of the tiaras...
@jonasviking9768
@jonasviking9768 9 месяцев назад
The fabric (often velvet) used to cover the base of some tiaras serve three purposes: making the tiara frame less visible, making the wearing of the tiara more comfortable and perhaps the most important one is minimizing the wear that hairpins would cause to the tiara. In the documentary “Kungliga smycken” one of the court hairdressers explain how he sometimes uses hairnet to “sew” tiaras to the hairstyles with hairpins but avoiding hairpins directly touching the tiara base. Some tiaras that has only one wearer have the base wrapped with hair from the wearer instead of fabric.

If the name is French, then the proper pronunciation for it is (burn-a-doe). My choice is CP Victoria. Her purple gown and amethyst tiara with her glossy dark hair was amazing. 👍 (I didn't care for the bow, flower, or whatever on the shoulder; looks awkward for me. I'd remove that and replace it with a pleat gathered semi-shawl on the shoulder that would continue to the floor front and back. (CP Victoria also looks fabulous in the CP fringe tiara. ❤️ that look.) I think they should shorten all of these gowns by 3" off the floor. If you watch closely you'll see Queen Sylvia stepping on her hem (11:06 plus) as she went up the stairs, and another lady had to hike her skirt so as not to step on her hem. I guess gowns were worn to the floor way back then to keep winter cold away from feet and legs. 🍃

You are right in the french pronation of the name of the swedish royal family, however after two centuries as heads of state in Sweden they no longer use the french pronation in favor of the scandinavian way of pronouncing their family name. The British RF changed their family name from the german “Saxe-Coburg-Gotha” to the more English sounding Windsor.....it would be completely improper to address them by their original german name.....even more so if it’s done with a distinct german pronunciation.
@jonasviking9768

For practicality I completely agree with you about the length of the dresses. But for the dress code of white tie floor length is actually the most correct hemline. The marble staircase of the blue hall where the Nobel banquet is held every year is notoriously difficult to gracefully both ascend and descend...... the marble is so highly polished that it is quite slippery. The 1300 guests are actually informed about the somewhat precarious nature of the stairs....my guess is that some of the ladies attending would rather rise their hemlines a bit much rather than risk falling. Why they don’t just put a carpet down the stairs is beyond me, but I guess esthetics and tradition won over practically in this case.

As you like to talk about the royals around the world, can you please make an effort in pronouncing their names correctly. Same goes with names of places and maybe check up a little bit about the histories of royals houses, etc, instead of saying that you guess or don't know. The Swedish royals last name is Bernadotte but the e in the end is silent and you insist on adding an a at the end as you pronounce it. Yes, Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte was one of Napoleon's generals and a fantastic administrator. Sweden was bankrupt and almost dissolved by the Danes and the Russians. The Swedish king, Gustav IV Adolf, was disposed and exiled from Sweden and Bernadotte was invited to be crowned the Crown Prince and sort out the affairs and he did a great job. As king he became known as Karl XIV Johan.
