I'm sorry you lost your friend. I haven't been unlucky enough for it to happen to me, but I have lost both my parents. Death sucks. All we can do is carry on and remember some semblance of a good time. I hope this song brings you both memories of your friend, and also some kind of peace. never heard this before. My cousin who was like a brother recently committed suicide and this was requested by him to be played at his funeral. That was the first I heard this. Part of the words to this song are also engraved on his headstone. Now I sit and listen to this over and over and I can actually hear his thoughts in the words. Very emotional and Willie's voice adds to that emotion! May you finally have peace Brian!
My sister shot herself. This was her favorite song. My heart aches.. but this song graces my life everyday in her memory. It's a cruel, cruel world out there.
The duality of this song and the John riding scene is uncanny. They both have this weird feeling of nostalgia, which is even more present if you played the first game. They both have such a subtle, yet very real feeling of a happy moment wrapped in a sad reality. John's riding into town to get a loan from the bank, but to buy a ranch to make his wife happy. The song, while seemingly happy and positive, the lyrics are surprisingly sad, which helps you understand the scene. John is hurting, but he's not complaining or crying, he's just, as the song says best, moving on.
I think the duality also touches in to the fact that john is riding back into town to buy ranch that's gunna be his final resting place in the next few short years to follow
At this part of the song, i stopped crying from what happened and started to smile a bit. It made me feel like what Arthur did had an impact, and it allowed John to have a second chance at life. And that was enough to make me smile.
The first time I listened to this song was under a train bridge by a small river in rural Wisconsin. There was something magical listening to Willie while sitting by as time just passed by, watching as people tubed down the river. Wish I could go back to stay there forever.
I was in an unhealthy relationship until recently. I'm now realising that I'm valuable and loving myself. This song has been helping me alot. The world can be cruel, but I'm moving on.

@adsfinch That’s what my family and I called my granddad on my mom’s side. He passed away in December of 2018… hell of a Christmas gift, right? The day of his funeral, anyone who was family or considered, we wore buffalo plaid shirts, and he wore one too in his casket. The pallbearers including myself wore a poppie flower. To this day, I still miss him. The fondest memory I have of him was getting me into football, and practicing in his yard. I remember the best advice he ever gave me from practice: he told me “Duddy (my family nickname for me), as a lineman, you are gonna get pushed, and sometimes you’ll fall. But No matter how hard you get pushed, and no matter how many times you fall, you’ll always have the strength to get back up, and go again.” So here I am… pushing life back hard, and getting back up every time. I miss you old timer.
My mum owns a dog business where she looks after dogs and there was this one dog we always looked after and her name is poppy and she was amazing but sadly died about a year ago. Seeing this comment,I started crying uncontrollably. whoever made this comment thank you for reminding me of that amazing dog and as the song says “I’m moving on”
As of typing this i have just completed my first playthrough of Red dead redemption 2 and it is the greatest experiences iv ever had. Its not a game its an experience and a magnificent story.
Easily hit me the hardest playing RDR2. Was a huge fan of the first game, thought the world of John Marston and his story, until Arthur came around. Playing John again, and this moment, the dichotomy of playing an old friend again while losing another character I'd learned to care for over dozens of hours, only to hear this song and remember John's tragic ending, I couldn't help to think: "God dammit, how the hell does Dan Houser and the other writers manage to sleep knowing how sad but also how amazing they craft such great characters." RIP to Arthur and RIP to John, easily the greatest realized characters in gaming ever realized.

As a huge fan of Willie and Arthur Morgan. I must say this hits hard. My dad and I saw willie together. Had the best experience together. And my dad saw me playing rdr2 one time and loved it . He loved westerns. Strangely One was on the TV in his Hospital room when he left this world. Spooky but felt good , my dad once said you ever thought about being a good cowboy. So i decided through my RDR2 journey to be Good Arthur and it hit hard .
I only got the chance maybe once a week for half an hour or so. Bought it in 2020, just finished. I think the extended time it took made it even better. Bittersweet. I really was sad
For me this song it is the reboot of things... John maybe was doing the things that he always hated: The loan, holding uncle, caring for a ranch. Yet, it was time for him to make for once in all his life the things right; no more robs, no more assaults. Just making himself a man and caring for his family.
I lost my grandfather on July 3rd 2019, he loved Willie Nelson, and this song makes me remember all the good times I spent with him when I was little, he died when I was 12, and after playing rdr2 I got to the part where this song plays as you ride with John Marston, and now I realise people don't die, the just ride off into the sunset
God, Willie is such a songsmith, this is timeless. Is this something he did years ago or tomorrow? Doesn't matter, it'll always be good and speak to someone.

Once my horse “Jordan” was killed during a mission and I couldn’t do anything. He almost died but luckily I save my game all the time. Then my horse died on me during the last Arthur mission. I cried for a whole week

That's just an overreaction. It's just a really good story, not "an extension of your life". And it is VERY sad that you need a video game character to teach you how to be a good man, especially a murderer and a thief.

Many people have cited characters in their favorite novels as father figure esque to them. Some of us, also live very sad lives. Doesn't take away from the significance art can do for people
As John approached the gates of heaven, he couldn't help but think of the brother he once had, if he would be reunited with him. He gazed at the luminous horizon and looked back on his life, reminiscing about his memories. He was taken aback by a familiar voice approaching him he couldn't tell who it was but it was a silhouette of a man. The man finally stopped in front of him and said "BOAH".
It’s incredible how this song perfectly describes Arthur Morgan, and John Marston AND Jack Marston. They are all bound by their past, and can only change their future. John looked back and it led to the Pinkerton finding him and killing him. Jack looked back at and he ended up becoming an outlaw. But jack gave up the life, and never looked back (kinda)

After playing through the game 7 or 8 times, I still can't decide if I like this version, or Josh Homme's version better. Both are a simply amazing and beautiful.
I like this one more. It feels happier to me, and it gives you a new sense of the changing world. The other version feels sadder, and more sad that times are changing. This feels like John is happy to be a new man, but the Josh Homme version feels like he wants to stay as an outlaw after killing micah.
Christian Larsson did a great cover of the RDR2 soundtrack, including this song. His is different and to me feels like it could actually be Arthur singing it. But there was just something about Willie's voice when you were playing the game and heard this for the first time. However, having heard all 3, it wouldn't have mattered who was singing it when you heard it first, the emotion would have been the same.

This song is cute and all, but I find it funny how it played as John is riding to Blackwater to buy a ranch after his wife and kid just left him and y'all are like "Arthur was amazing" but in reality this song is about John suffering to buy a ranch just so he can get The Love of his life back
That's just him an Abigail, obviously Abigail was gonna come back to him Arthur Morgan was betrayed by the man he called father, Dutch and Hosea basically raised him Arthur was in the gang for so long and was super loyal, only to see it crumble before his eyes and see the man he's known and loved all his life throw him away and the other man died because of dutchs job which was rigged from the start thanks to the rat Arthur knew he was dying and Knew he ruined The downes family life and tries to redeem himself, He knows his time is running out so he has to help those he loves escape the outlaw life and be safe before he passes, He basically sacrificed himself to save John and tells him to never look back, what does John do? Get revenge on Micah and leads the pinkertons to him. Besides, This song is meant for Arthur not John
@@dkb115 You forget that Arthur was also a scumbag, most of the time. Did we all just suddenly forget that he killed dozens of lawmen who were only doing their jobs? Or that he had no real qualms with being Strauss' money shark other than it felt 'dishonest' as it didn't involve shooting people? Arthur changed his view of the world only after his life was in great jeopardy. That's part of his character arc. For John, people seem to forget that his character started out as a man who was completely unwilling to raise a family and continue being a gang member. He was a renegade through and through, and his interactions with arthur, his wife, his son and Dutch changed him. He grew up. The moment John takes revenge on Micah was a lapse in judgement (despite the fact that the game rewards you with more money than his family would ever need, which kind of does contradict them living a hard life on a farm, but whatever.) and it set the stage for the first game, in which he has effectively matured into a caring husband with a mean streak. Neither Arthur nor John are perfect. Nobody is. That's the point of the entire story. They are just people doing their best to be good in a world that spits on them. Lastly, your point is irrelevant, considering the OP mentions that this song plays during John's mission in the epilogue. The song is about "moving on", not about "mourning arthur". It's about becoming a better person, despite the cruelty of the world. Arthur's change of heart came far too late, but John has a new chance at a better life. The song is fitting, because it describes John's personal struggle with himself. Therefore, it doesn't actually have anything directly to do with Arthur, even if he was of course one of the catalysts that ensured that change would happen to John.
@@dkb115 You missed the point, he wasn't really comparing Arthur's and John's situations but pointing out how everyone in the comments is talking about Arthur when this scene plays in the John parts of the game when he's trying to retrieve a land for his family.

Man, realizing the cowboy outfit was a gift from Abigail and seeing him wear it for the first time. Leading into getting to play as him in free roam for the “first time” it had me smile crying, I was a kid again, the last time I played as John was in 2016 on an xbox 360 and I had played as him for years. It was heart wrenching to know the ending that I had played so long ago, but I was along for the ride.

I’m 16, listened to “On the Road Again” of course when I was little but never listened to his sadder music from the heart until now. Glad I understand hard times come and go.
When this played, right after John had saddled up, in his old duds from the first game, riding through a wide open grassy meadow, I cried, hard. I played the hell out of the first game when it came out, for years. So when I played through RDR2 and got to this point, it was like I got to see the most important person in John's life. Like I got to know the friend of a friend, through his eyes, in the most vulnerable way possible. I'd never experienced that in a game before, and I doubt I ever will again.

My girlfriend broke up with me while I was playing this game (It was my mistake). And while playing, this song popped up in one of the final missions and I liked it. I was listening to this EVERY GODDAM DAY! After the trauma, I tried to apologize to her for so long and I worked very hard for it, now we're together again and I kinda happy but feeling a little guilty (She deserves more). This song is to me like feel the pain without getting hurt, and I gotta say, it's a very weird feeling. I love you, Giovana Pampuch! Hope we'll be together till the end.

its very strange feeling sorrow over the passing of a man who never existed, long after the mission red dead redemption, i was still feeling like i was almost mourning for Arthur. goes to show how immersive the game was. only game where i walked rather than running around. it is one hell of a video game.
