I don’t blame the ports who are complaining about the numbers of tourists. I think there should be limits. Remember, these places are their homes. I want to enjoy where I go, not fight through crowds. The local people I’ve talked to mentioned the large ships have too many people to manage well.

A lot of commenters think that the typical cruise passenger really enhances the local economy. In some places maybe this is true but for larger cities with their own vibrant economies the tourist trade produces empty dollars and causes more problems than it is worth. With the advent of the mega ships - geared towards corporate profits only - the problem has grown out of proportion in many places. Venice, Key West, Bar Harbor, Barcelona, Amsterdam, etc. do not want to be reality theme parks. The people who live there aren't paid cast characters in a Disney attraction. When the budget lines pull in and unload the dirty sneaker crowd with screaming kids it all seems to be a losing proposition.
@allytrudie864
@allytrudie864 15 дней назад
BINGO! Land tourists spent WAY more money. No one cares about the ships- they don’t even stay in hotels overnight. Tourists that pay are wanted over cruise ships that come in for a day and leave. Cruisers are not the smartest people and they think everyone travels their plebby way when most of us avoid it like the plague.

Some of the complaints that the Barcelona residents have about tourism may have some merit. However, a lot of the particpants just seem to be the usual 'disrupters'. Regardless, they need to take up their dissatisfaction with their local officials. Intimidating and spraying tourists is not acceptable. I live in a very popular tourist area in tht U.S., and I hope anyone who tooks these types if actions in my hometown would be arrested.

How do you know many of the participants as you put it are disrupters whatever a disrupter is? You have no more idea than I have and this is the problem giving their opinions about something they know nothing about. Barcelona is under stress because of tourists. There is no fault on tourists or Barcelona. At issue is the volume of tourists has made it expensive for locals to find housing and pay for goods. Tourist both help economies of cities and towns but, make it harder for locals to afford to live there. Many places that would be apartments are now VRBO or Air BnB. As tourists we are in a position to pay higher prices for restaurants, gift shopping and entertainment. Locals not so much. The irony is that tourism is good for local economies, but their governements are not being pro-active in a way that works for both tourists and local folks. I have seen this first hand in Portugal and the government there does have measures in place that welcome tourism and protects the well being of their citizens.

I find it strange that the activist are putting energy into targeting the tourist. They need to be targeting the government and systems that allow cruise ships in the ports. And it is not just cruisers that need to stop since they have no effect on housing which is one of the complaints. That is the tourists that stay in the Hotels and air BnBs since landlords find they can make more money from the tourists than renting or selling to locals. So for the locals to get back to what it was before, the travel companies should restrict people from going to those places that want the tourists to stay away. From Halifax NS, Canada - We love to have tourists visit- helps the economy and promotes the city and province. If Barcelona is eliminated from all cruise ship itineraries for about 5 years - a lot of businesses that rely on those dollars would die.

Thanks for your cruise news it is always interesting and informative. Crazy protesters! I live in a town where many ships dock (Southampton UK), bringing much wealth to our city. There are some grumbles about increased traffic on certain days but nothing too loud as most people see the benefits of having these ships coming. My next cruise is in October from Southampton and back which is a perfect recipe for me! I fell in love with cruising last year and now want more! I have learnt much from videos such as yours and am grateful.

A..... I was a little worried becasue of all the negative things I had seen about Progresso. I had heard reports of alot of crime against tourists. But, we had a great time without any issues. We weren't drinking and paid extra attention to our surroundings as you should do anyway in an unfamiliar area

The problem with the Progresso port is the distance from the peer to the mainland. All there is to do close to the ship is hangout in the souvenir shops.

I don't live in a cruise town, but I do live in a tourist town. For the most part they're welcome because they tend to be pretty decent and respectful. But I can understand why some places don't want tourists or are tired of them, especially if the people their tend to be rowdy or disrespectful of the local population.
