Cruising ALL DAY to our Anchorage in the Georgetown Harbor on the Great Loop

When you have a 10-hour cruise and you move trawler speed, you are at the mercy of whatever the tides are for the day. Sunlight is the limiting factor therefore "it is what it is". We start with an early morning departure from Ashley Marina in historic Charleston, run through some No-See-Ums tests, and end up with a beautiful cruise to Georgetown, South Carolina.
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

Just for informational purposes. Noseeums only come out right after the sun sets for about an hour or two. They don’t fly in the wind, so a breezy evening means no noseeums. They live in and around sandy and marshy areas. Noseeums are not gnats. Almost nothing I have ever tried really works to keep them from biting during the peak time right after sunset, unless, you have really drenched your skin in whatever product you have. Once that product dries out it becomes ineffective during that leak time. If you are getting bit during the bright daytime while riding on a boat then it’s more than likely not a noseeum. There are however biting gnats that will get you during the daytime. I enjoy your videos. Nice job!

Thanks for the information! Bugs are just part of life on the water, I think... They aren't bad enough to get off the water just a little annoying - plenty of things we can do if they are truly terrible at a location. Cheers and thanks for watching!

The best fix for any flying insect is wind. When the wind is calm and you have to be outside, like on your flybridge, a box fan is your friend. Get a no-se-um net/screen and tape it over a box fan. Point the fan at yourself and enjoy. The moving air will keep the bugs off you but the fan will also suck them in and trap them in the netting. The only issue is you need either a 12V fan or inverter power on the flybridge. Putting the net on the fan, its easier to place it over the back as the air holds it on. But it works better on the front. It's just harder to get it to stay on the front. Take the front cover off , attach the net to the inside of the cover and then put the cover back on. Now the bugs will be trapped inside the fan and can not crall to the edge to fly away.
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo 2 года назад
Love the idea of a fan with the no-see-um netting - genius!! We just so happen to have 12V and a regular outlet so that is a great option 🤙

Another super video of your ventures northbound on the loop, a little "hickup" but your experience saw it through. Good job. It sounds like you have a air leak in the suction side of your fuel line. I had it happen to me and had to replace some line and fittings. No problems after that. Give hugs to Ollie, one heck of a good boat dog. Aloha!

I was hoping one of those bug sprays would be a clear winner. We'll definitely tune in for your future experiments. We love traveling to Upper Michigan and the bugs up there can be vicious. Not supposed to be common but since we’re done a lot of living on this boat something’s we can guess without much research! It’s a common topic when you change your fuel filters so I guess it starts there!

At the end of this video, you were talking about a hook and your bridle and how you hook when anchored first, then put on the bridle. It would help me to see those things and see what Jen is doing. Could she wear the GoPro on her head and demo the anchoring? We have only anchored twice for practice and did not use a bridle. We just ordered a snubber. Just a suggestion-I could probably find it on RU-vid as well.

I haven’t finished watching the entire episode, but wanted to put in my 2 cents worth on no seeums. I live in Savannah (bummed I didn’t realized when you went through here-you would have had another dinner invitation). When I golf, I use Avon Skin So Soft. It feels good, smells good, is not harmful. It does not keep the sand knats from landing, but they drown before they bite. You do not feel them land, but at the end of the day you can count the dead ones on your legs, etc. Gross, but kind of fun at the same time. Others here stuff dryer sheets in their hats and clothing. I’ll watch the end of your episode now. Hope to run across you at some point. We are starting our loop from Rhode Island in June on our 43 foot Eastbay.
@SchoandJo
@SchoandJo 2 года назад
Sweet, best of luck starting your Loop! What route are you taking in the North East? Eerie to Trent Severn?
@janetmiller1254
@janetmiller1254 2 года назад
We will be taking the entire length of the Erie Canal all the way to Lake Erie so we can go by Detroit and through the St. Claire River and under the Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. We have a family cottage there and hope to stay the last 2 weeks in July for a family reunion. Not sure if we will go up the Ontario or Michigan side of Lake Huron. When I graduated from college 45 years ago I sailed with a friend and her family up Lake Huron, across the Georgian Bay, and all through the North Channel for 6 weeks. It was so beautiful. We even saw the Northern Lights. I’d like to see it again, but Michigan has its charms, too. We will catch up with Loopers again at Mackinac. How do you intend to go?

@SchoandJo

No worries! Ollie will use her mat when we go 24 hours without taking her to shore. For example if we are in an anchorage without land access, or cruise sun up to sun down, or any other rare situation that we won't take her in, in those scenarios she will use her mat. Otherwise she simply holds it and goes to shore when we go.

@@SchoandJo IALA A works, I believe, on the basis that if you are a stranger, entering a strange port, without local knowledge or local charts, after a yellow clear water mark, you keep the red mark on your port side and green to starboard - heading up river. Simple rule for me - red light to red and green to green. When you land you can buy the local chart or take local knowledge and later depart in safety, reversing the rule.

Hey Jennifer - I have been meaning to comment on this for a while. You are getting quite a bit of sun burn on your nose. I have also been an extensive boater - and because I didn't use enough sun screen over the years (or wear enough hats) I have had to deal with having several skin cancers removed (basil cell). Since are also very fair skinned I'd recommend liberal use of sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.
