Its about the boat. A well prepared and maintained seaworthy boat will make or break the ocean crossing experience. As a solo sailor its all about autopilots .because its a boat its going to break. So spares are where its at.

@@followtheboat just finished watching this with Rene. You both are the reason why I wanted to buy a sailboat. The stories you wrote on your blog I read over and over. Thank you for sharing this way coz you're both great story tellers. This story didn't need B roll. The saving of turtles, hallucinations, wall of fire, squall after squall, hand steering all the way, Indian and Andaman and then Melaka straits .. fuyoh ⛵ not for the faint hearted. Simply Amazing. Another story I admire about FTB is the crossing of the Red Sea. When anyone says Red Sea we have visions of pirates and ransom. To prepare yourselves for the crossing, to actually go through it ... That's another truly brave experience. You guys have really earned your sailor stripes. 💘

That you told this story in your usual understated manner adds to it -- only in narrative art do I believe that less is more. (That sounds so friggin pretentious but I believe it entirely.) One question not addressed: how did Millie react to all this? I'm quite stingy with my internet time but your hour long poscasts are always time well spent. Best regards.

Hmm , I do not think I would cross an ocean or sea short handed with only one working autohelm . In fact I would want two independent ones working on a different system if I could . Now fully crewed maybe I would. My boat has just one right now , but new to me and I am not crossing oceans . I am planning two systems independent of each other , one a hydraulic ram existing and I think the other an octopus drive . Both sets of electronics will be able to drive the other one's drive adding additional redundancy and a 2nd emergency steering system assuming you do not lose the rudder . I would be able to steer with the octopus drive if the hydraulics go down or of course the emergency tiller . What I do need to work on is an emergency rudder next .

If your boat is well found and you have a working autopilot and functional sails, it shouldn't be a problem, Tim! It's a fast crossing until the edge of Sumatra, by which time you're almost on the home stretch.

I’m interested that you say you relied on your main and mizzen. Was that because of the issues with halyard wrap on the genoa? I sail a 40ft ketch and if the weather turns gnarly, sail on genoa (or staysail on inner forestay) and mizzen.

the old Greeks had tales about hearing the Sirens during gruesome sea conditions. There is a reasonably recent video about an old sailor who is quite famous among insiders for doing a lot of crossings between continents with a very simple and relatively small boat, just sitting at the tiller for very long time periods day and night. He also talked about hearing things that do not exist. Yet these are the most crazy stories I´ve heard regarding this topic. Maybe Followtheboat are just the most frank and open in talking about it.

Just a bit of feedback on the title. There's a joke in there- the reasonable and the absurd.. the reasonable is that sailing across the Indian Ocean nearly broke your boat.. the absurd is that it nearly broke you too The absurd part is the punchline of the joke, but you put it before the set-up. The brackets after the statement should have said (and us), not the other way round..
@followtheboat

Yes, I had it that way round at first, but swapped it back to get the whole first part visible to anyone scrolling. Liz 🙏

As we say in the episode, there are a couple of blog entries we wrote at the time, which include images and screen grabs. They are linked in the description. Nine days of hand-steering, not 14. Just because you can't imagine it, doesn't mean it's not true. Jamie posted a short clip from the crossing 10 years ago, check the date in this upload: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5mw_okFkkF8.html Liz
