It’s so hard using the crutches. I almost fell 2 times. Lucky me my husband saved me from falling. I don’t know how to balance yet. I am keep watching this video to learn how to walk with crutches. This video is very helpful
Thank you - a very clear and easy to follow film that will make my first use of crutches far from home (Cusco, Perú) much less daunting as I make my way back home via three flights to England
I got knee surgery so I've also not been able to put any weight on my left leg. After 12 days of laying in bed and being extremely restless I decided to go for a walk and damn it humbled me. I "walked" for about 1.5km (0.9 miles) and had to stop multiple times cuz I was totally out of breath and exhausted. My chest, shoulders and arms were just fried when I got home 😂
The stairs are terrible. I lack the strength to get up from a sitting position with only one good leg. And My balance makes it scary as well. Getting up or down stairs is very complicated.
Don't bother using crutches going upstairs or downstairs for fuck's sake. Turn around and shuffle up with your arse. Coming from a 6'2 fairly strong person. Order online delivery shopping and get black bin bags if your shop doesn't provide plastic bags. Take it easy.
I'm in the air cast right now (a boot), and I'm still not allowed to walk. I have to be 0 pressure for 6 weeks and then I can start walking with the boot. The only convenience is I can take it off to sleep and wash
@Leaders Of The Old School I know all this. I see my doctor in 2 weeks. He's the one who told me I could try and walk after xx time. I'm 3 ish weeks post op, and I fucked my ankle January 19, so it's been a hot minute.
That can be challenging. My gf focuses on the glute workout from hopping. MAKE SURE YOU'RE GETTING ENOUGH PROTEIN. That makes all the difference with muscle building and improving your stamina and endurance for hopping and arm strength for crutch use.
I broke my left ankle in 3 places in August 2023 whilst on mini break holiday (4" kerb in daylight and sober!!)..spent 2 weeks in hospital due to having an external fixation before having an orif......was non-weight bearing for rest of August and September which was a total nightmare....toilet and bed and stairs all very hard..luckily in house had downstairs toilet and had an office chair in kitchen to wheel around..walking again now 10 weeks later and can also now climb and descend the stairs as i was doing bum shuffles and knee crawls on landing and downstairs hallway...(ouch on the knees)...keep going if your reading this and have broken yours and keep entertained with movies and tv and also have clothes downstairs too!!
Thank you for the video! I just got on crutches last night with my injured leg. They told me about what to do and had papers explaining things but a visual demonstration is really the best for me!
I just torn ligaments in my right ankle below my right ankle on Friday. I will be in the Ottobock CAM aircast moonboot for 8 to 12 weeks. Not able to put full weight on my foot so this will help
@@hanbulban3131 hahaha ya, I got a knee scooter instead. But I guess for crutches, you're supposed to swing all the way and then put your good foot gently down. I was always too afraid of falling forward so I kept hopping. Don't be like me! Lol
Addicbaddic I tried the swinging forward and almost fell thankfully had something to hold on to, i might just get a knee scooter I’m tired of this. Thanks mate
No matter how many videos I watch and how much I practice, I just can’t use crutches for non weigh bearing. I hop and use my scooter but now my knee on my supposedly good leg is swelling and hurting from the distress.
The theory is fine. But with a weak bladder, holding the foot up & back is not working, at all. The crutches fit as well as they can, seeing as nobody bothered fitting them before I was sent home after surgery. And stairs?? Down 2 steps, my husband walked backwards in front of me, all but lifting me down. Back up, I could only do a "butt" walk, I don't have the upper body strength to stand on one leg & hoist myself up - nor is my unbroken leg strong enough to push me up. It doesn't help that this aircast is utterly uncomfortable and confusing. If I pump it so it stays up when crutch-hopping, it presses painfully on the insicions. If I leave it less inflated, it slips down for each hop. My "good" leg, is hard, bloated, looking like an elephant's leg. My broken leg will appear with a 10" scar on either side. I am now petrified of stairs, scared of what more pain the hospital staff is going to put me through, panicky over what more I will have to figure out myself because nobody talks to the slabs of meat they push along their assembly line!
Hi where you say dont add extra padding as it can cause discomfort. I totally disagree i have been on crutches for 8 weeks now 6 of which i wasnt allowed to put my foot on the floor the last 2 weeks i can rest my foot on the floor. But the crutches really hurt your hands after a while so what i did was get a yellow car sponge and cut it in half and selotape each piece to each hand of the crutch. Much nicer on the hands.
For me I had fractured my ankle and I had the crutches for 3 weeks they bothered me so damn much . I got them off later on . My ankle is now completely healed but it hurts to walk bc I am not used to it . So guys also know having a boot on after it heals to try and walk with only stiff ur ankle or foot more than it did while having ur boot on for it to heal causing it to stiffin
If only it were possible to demonstrate how to sort things out when you need to go to the toilet. That’s where I have the most difficulty, you have to rely so much on the good leg and crutches and cramped spaces don’t mix.
How can you not slip? I have a spiral fracture in my tibia and I'm scared of going up and down the few stairs on the bus. I can't even get off of my bed without someone lowering my leg off of the bed, and I have to go back to school on Wednesday.
I fractured my leg in 2017 or 2018 and i didn’t know there was water next to my fridge on the floor and i straight fell on the floor it was a knee cast
The lift I believe should help us. It is very dangerous to be living alone and taking a stairs adventure! Esp if you have shoulder injury and your back hurts after sleeping on your back for 30 days!! Crazy video lol
i can’t seem to get the hang of crutches 😩 i had ankle surgery a week ago. i broke my ankle & had a plate and screws put it. i currently use a walking frame because crutches are too hard
I feel you on this. I broke my ankle a week ago and had surgery that evening. I can't seem to get the hang of crutches for the life of me so I'm nervous about getting outside for my follow up appointment tomorrow with my surgeon.
I am in the same position (except my injuries are reversed from yours)- got no practical advice from the fracture clinic or how to use crutches - have not left the house except to go to the hospital for over five weeks. I don't have " a good leg."
I have had a sore ankle for 5 years and I go to London just to see what’s wrong and I use brace boot crutches and wheel chair nothing works and no knows what is wrong with it an I can not walk more than 10 min without pain and I walk on my toes I have had 40 injections and blood test. Nope nothing help me plz what is wrong with it
Robert Clark hi Robert , I’m using crutches and a walker after few days now my good leg and foot hurt a lot . Did you figure out a better way to use them
I have tried crutches.. broke my lower legg a few days ago.. I'm getting SOOOOO frustrated it's either the crutches r too long/big for me, or I'm just plain stupid.. but I just can't keep my leg bent like that while trying to propel myself forward.. I dont have the strength of the Incredible Hulk in my arms.. what am I doing wrong.?*!?*! :(
Amy Mahoney I agree I fractured my right ankle and can't get the hang of using them. My hallway to my room is cluttered with my daughters crap she put from redoing the bathroom. The stuff has been there for 3 months. It wasn't a problem when I was fine but trying to manuver into my bedroom on crutches is not doable. I'm going to have her move rugs on new ceramic flooring out before I break my neck. My sister text me to get better before Las Vegas trip on February 3. Ok I will try because we paid for 5 nights and airfare already. This sucks. Good luck to you. Patricia
I had that problem at first but after having to be on them so many times, I finally found a way that actually worked for me. Try putting your injured leg straight in front of you. It's a lot more comfortable depending on your injury. I have Patella Alta, or Patella Femoral Syndrome. What that is, basically, is that my knee cap sits up higher than it's supposed to and it causes some pretty extensive cartilage damage. I just had surgery on my knee November 21st, the day before Thanksgiving. They went in arthroscopically and cut the ligaments and the other stuff that were attached to keep my knee cap in place so they could move it back down in it's right spot and also cleaned out some of the damaged cartilage. Hope you're doing better now!
Amy Mahoney hey I just fracture my ankle severely and displaced my ankle socket I had surgery and the first time I had to walk on crutches I was so mad because I felt so weak and kind vulnerable I want to quit after day 2 I’m now 4 weeks starting Monday with this injury two weeks after surgery I have pins in my ankle so walking on crutches does get easier. I still have minor accidents with my crutches because I’m very impatient and I want to get to things incredibly fast and I’m super independent so I think I can do it myself everyone is different eventually you get the hang of it
You need to find a proper occupational or physical therapist! Do not guess at this problem. Crutch length is CRITICAL, when you find the magic setting, I think you may find out that crutching on a smooth floor can feel like walking on a cloud, NO jerky walking, NO pain, NO strain, it was amazing. I was shocked at the easy feel, once I got the coordination right. You also have to avoid any excess up-down motion of the body, thus is the BIG energy waster. I just closely watched a chandelier in the room, and practiced until I could not see "any" movement of the chandelier against the wall behind. It is possible to reduce the up-down body movement like tuning a radio to a clear station. Assuming you CAN tune a radio! Practice!
Man that woman is struggling in just a few steps when going across the screen with the crutches. You can see her shoulders go up on every step. She is carry way to much weight and is not strong enough. Very sad.
@@KM-xi5dn dear lord youre an idiot- anyone that understands musles and weight distribution understands this person is struggling by just watching her. See how her shoulders go up a lot with each step? She is too weak and too heavy. See how she has to shift all her weight to one side when taking a step up the stairs? Same problem. This is a huge problem in US of A. Too many people that cannot carry their own weight.
