Flo Mounier is a great extreme metal drummer. I watch and learn a little about what it takes to get through the great classic Cryptopsy song, (Slit your Guts)

In the summer of 1998, my rag-tag group of death metal friends from our small Illinois town made the 5 hour journey to attend the legendary Milwaukee Metal Fest held at the Eagles Auditorium that year. I was only 15 years at the time but was already a die-hard fan that had discovered bands like Sepultura, Suffocation, Resurrection (FL), Sinister, and Pungent Stench, etc. at the age of 13. So this was like my Woodstock -ha! We got to see so many great and respected bands like Suffocation, Crowbar, Cryptopsy, Death, Incantation, Deaden (IL), Mayhem, Emperor, Bloodstorm (NJ), Destruction, Mortician, and so many more. We were all fans of Cryptopsy's 'Blasphemy Made Flesh' album and really wanted to see those inhuman hyperblasts that Flo did and wondered if he was able to pull them off live. So we noticed that there was a large window just above and behind the drum-rise (The Rave stage) and decided to watch the set from this angle. We witnessed one of the most insane and unforgettable performances that I have ever seen in my death metal experiences. Even before they took the stage, there was a buzz among the crowd filing in to the Rave Stage (a particularly passionate fan was clenching his fists and grinning uncontrollably as he said "CRYPTOPSY, DUDE,...CRYPTOPSY!!!!). He was a die-hard Cryptopsy fan and we could feel his excitement as we had never before been around so many other death metal fans!! The entire place lost there minds as they started playing. There was a circle pit of at least 200 rabid death-heads, Flo delivered flawlessly through a set of classic Cryptopsy material and proved that his hyperblasting was in fact 'the real deal'. Not only that, but he was also playing the fastest double-kick drumming that I had seen from any drummer at that time. It was like we were in the ideal 'drum cam' position to see Flo's "inhuman performance" live. I can actually picture Flo hyperblasting like it was yesterday (a memory that is forever burned into my mind). The set was nearly perfect but unfortunately Lord Worm (a favorite vocalist in our circle of friends) had left the band a few months before as Mike Disalvo had replaced him. I have nothing against Disalvo but Lord Worm is such an enigmatic performer that just would have made the ultimate Cryptopsy experience complete. Later in 2006, most of us got our chance to finally see Lord Worm as he rejoined at that time as Cryptopsy was opening for Suffocation in Mokena, IL (The Pearl Room). Lord Worm literally owned the stage with his distinctive style of indecipherable growling and shrieks. And yes, the infamous 30+ second scream in 'Open Face Surgery' was witnessed by all in the audience. He even stood there frozen in place (in suspended animation) for a good 20 seconds after the song had ended causing humorous confusion to everyone...only to concrete the fact that he is a living legend in the underground. If anyone was in that circle pit at the 1998 Milwaukee show, please share your perspective! -Devon (Remnants of Industry, Somnolence, Subterranean Drift, Altered Existence)

I would have like to see Death more then anything. I was born in 1997 so I never got too see Death when I finally got into death metal when I was 14 years old in 2011. My battle vest has the scream bloody gore back patch with all the other album patches around it. Truly my favourite band next to Cryptopsy. My twin brother has the none so vile Cryptopsy backpatch on his jacket.

@@shalo6669 Yeah man!! Wouldn't change a thing!! Well, sleeping on a picnic table wasn't very comfortable actually -ha. Eventually I crawled back into the tiny Honda with the other guys (it got pretty cold outside of Milwaukee at the highway rest-stop -ha). We each got about 2 hours of sleep and had an entire day of death and black metal to absorb...unfortunately we had to leave during Emperor's set to begin the 5 hour drive back home!! -Devon

@@СлаваУкраїні-с3л Haha...I bet your brother gets some funny looks with the 'None So Vile' cover on his back (although it does have historical significance as it was a based on an actual event). Seen any good metal bands/shows over the years?

Yeah, from what i remember, Flo was the first doing the hyper blast, before the gravity blast came around! This album is so badass!

Actually, I would argue that Kataklysm's Max Duhamel was before Flo (back in 1993, Nuclear Blast Records was advertising Kataklysm as 'The Northern Hyperblast'). Check out Kataklysm 'The Mystical Gates of Reincarnation' 1993 ep...although Flo of Cryptopsy was a bit faster at it (but then again, the blastbeats on Kataklysm 'Sorcery' are pretty darn fast -ha). There were lots of underground DM bands doing hyperblasts in the early 90s (Magus from Texas, Decrepit and Embalmer from Ohio, etc) but Max was definitely the more influential drummer at the time (being heard on more widely distributed Nuclear Blast Records compilations, etc). Nobody had really heard of Cryptopsy until 1995/96...when 'Blasphemy Made Flesh' got re-released by Displeased Records. Back then, if you didn't have a cool metal friend or a decent record store...it would take years to actually hear an obscure band that you'd read or were told about by other fans. Different times for sure!! I miss those days actually (it filled your head up with all kinds of possibilities of discovering the heaviest music out there at the time!!). I can still remember the first time I heard Cryptopsy 'Defenestration' (was hanging out with my friend Morbid Mike in Dec 1997 as he was hilariously pantomiming Lord Worm's shrieks and growls with total accuracy!!). I was blown away by the tighness of the drumming and soon started practicing the "Cryptopsy-blast" regularly (never got use it for any songs I recorded though...well, let's say "not yet" anyway -ha). -Devon

Cool to see a fellow Samael fan!! Funny you mention Proscriptor of Absu...Proscriptor was actually doing some impressive hyperblast-drumming in his band Magus before Cryptopsy was even a band (or was known as Necrosis at the time...not as good of a band).
