Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we hear the Combat Story of Sean “Buck” Rogers, a former Green Beret who served multiple deployments with various units, including 10th Special Forces Group, after escaping an incredibly difficult and harsh childhood.
[NOTE: We're launching on Patreon soon. Register to get notified at www.combatstory.com/patreon]
Buck transitioned to 19th Special Forces Group and eventually joined the law enforcement ranks, including time with SWAT.
Since leaving the military and law enforcement, Sean has written a best selling book titled ‘Rising Above: A Green Beret's Story of Childhood Trauma and Ultimate Healing’, became an ultramarathoner, founded the FNG Academy, and now produces content and leads a community trying to help other aspiring special operations candidates succeed in selection and the Special Forces and Special Operations worlds.
Buck is working on getting his second book published and has several interesting irons in the fire that we touch on in this episode.
I hope you enjoy this real and raw Combat Story with someone who’s overcome so much and maintains an overwhelmingly positive attitude as much as I did.

I'm not a veteran but I'm an avid listener of Combat Story . I work at Oshkosh Defense and we built the MAT-V that Buck mentioned several times in the podcast . It makes my job so much more gratifying and important when you hear from a warrior that served in something you personally laid hands on . Love the podcast , keep up the good work !

I remember Buck talking about how he felt shameful about having been “just a cook” and how it kept him back later on. I understand that feeling completely! I was an Army Reserve MP with two mobilizations, both CONUS! That’s from 2000-08, both stateside, at the same installation Garrison Support Unit so that was our exact mission), both times performing “just the LEO mission.” I had a few friends that got picked up to do deployments to backfill with Active or Reserve/Guard units that needed a few extra guys, but I never did. So for a very long time I was upset with myself that after 8yrs throughout the beginning through the surges where MP’s were in high demand for various missions that I was totally slick sleeve on my right shoulder. I’ve had guys tell me that someone had to be home to protect their families and were glad it was me. Years later one of my old soldiers left the Reserve and became an infantry officer in the OkNG. He had been one of the guys to deploy once or twice to backfill. So the night I got the call he had died in Afghanistan was rough. I had a lot of bad thoughts for a while: sadness for the loss, wanted revenge, but the biggest was questioning had if I had been there if I could have prevented his death. It was not a good deployment for the OKNG back in 2011, they lost several LT’s, numerous enlisted guys, with a lot more wounded. It took a long time to get to the point that I wasn’t upset about not being able to protect my friend, or hadn’t deployed.

I once saw a pair of legs, complete from toes to pelvis, with maybe 8 vertebrae still attached, and a bit of spinal cord hanging out of the vertebrae. The torso looked to have been pretty cleanly removed from the pelvis in an almost precise manner just above the hip bones, so that if you could stand the legs up the pelvis and lower abdomen would be like an empty wine glass sitting on two stems. The really bizarre thing, to me anyway, was there was no torso, no arms, no head, no internal body parts no clothing no gear other than half of a wooden AK butt stock about 12 feet away, no crater, and remarkably little blood on the ground. To this day I wonder what he was hit by. I've seen a guy take a hit center mass from a single round of a burst fired from an A10, it was I hate to use this word but for lack of a better one spectacular result, but nothing like who we referred to as Elvis ( From the Elvis the Pelvis nickname Elvis Pressly got due to his signature pelvic moves, an older E7 came up with that bit of humor) One thing I'd bet money on was Elvis was probably dead before his legs hit the ground, and never knew what hit him which means we had something in common. I only mention this because Sean mentioning seeing the aftermath of Aviation putting in a full night's work and wondering what hit some of the bodies. Also Sean mentioned developing an ear for what direction rounds were coming from, unfortunately for me a near miss from a big ass mortar waffled my left ear drum early on and from then on almost every round, or anything else seemed to be coming from my right side, and has only gotten marginally better with time. Sucks to lose stereoscopic hearing.

Strangely, Mr. Rogers and I have some experience intersections, between adolescence, time on a PSD, and being a 'Fobbit' seeking shelter from indirect fire. On an occasion of 'get in the bunker, I had a switch flip where I wanted to go kill the guys shooting at us. I asked a British major attached to my brigade, "Sir?, you have the authority to order me to go kill these bastards shooting at us, right?" He said: "Yes, but I don't think that your commander would like that very much"..with a smile. I proceeded to detail a sniper operation to counter the enemy. Thank you Sean for sharing your story 👍🏻

Most people cannot commit to raising a dog properly with love, let alone having children. Why people rush into having children especially when they have had poor experiences I will never know. It is impossible to love another until one loves themselves. If we are full of loathing for those who wronged us, we can never show pure love and acceptance. Know your demons & issues, know the signs that red flag a potential problem. Be good to yourself and good to others.
