Hi Mark Great effort :-) I was surprised that the relationsship between Business Applications and Application Services is shown as "Provided by", and not "Consumes", which I thought was the official relationship between a BA and a AS? Or is it not so strict?
Thanks for the examples Mark! These are very much welcomed by the whole ServiceNow Community. I question came to mind regarding the CI Relationship Types used between the Application Services. How do you see the difference between these "Microservices" that can create an underlying dependency to another Application Service representing a bigger system vs. "Application Modules" or Platform Applications that have their own Application Services running on top of a platform type of Application Service? Everything connected to one another with "Depends on" relationship? Maybe different relationship types for different use cases? Or maybe there is a plan for adding some "type" attributes to Application Service class to differentiate between different application models?
There is a simple approach which is to use “depends on” to represent the integrations currently. This is Ok for dependency analysis but it doesn’t provide lots of detail on what the nature of the dependency is. This is an area I have been trying to evolve to have a better ability to manage those dependancies more rigorously. Read my Digital Product white paper to see where we want to go with regards to managing the full mesh of dependancies better in the near future.
@@markbodman Sure. I'll check the Digital Product materials. I've been doing some custom implementations on Business App "integrations" into CMDB and very eager to see this part is going to be included into CSDM some day.
@@mikkojuola I also wanted to add that there is a keen differentiation on the choice of relationship. One being “part of” and the other being “depend on”. The ownership, governance and interaction for these differences is different and the automation we implement on this structure will be different.
Very Nice! Saw interdependencies between applications shown as setup by application services level, not at buziness apps level as I would expect. Would those relations be replicated for all environments (DEV, UAT etc.)? Should Biz App relations not be set?
It can be both. The Platform examples demonstrate the Business App dependancies and how those are mirrored in Application Service dependancies. Here, we don't cover the Business App dependancies specifically. This is an area that will evolve in the next few releases, as we firm up our CSDM model to better support DevOps & a more configuration driven dependancies.
