The Medulla Nebula, CTB 1, Abell 85 or LBN 576 as it is also known depending on which catalogue you look in, consists of the remnants of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopeia. Interestingly, this object has been mistaken for a planetary nebula and is catalogued as Abell 85 in George Abell's second version of Abell's Planetary Nebula catalogue published in 1966 and was also included in the first version published in 1955.
The Medulla Nebula is located at 10,000 light years from Earth and the diameter of the remnants is estimated to be about 1,100 light years. The age of CTB 1 has many estimates but the most commonly accepted is 10,000 years.
