It's pretty much a mod itself. It's based on a total conversion of Nival's game called Blitzkrieg, which is awesome. There is even a Mad Max type strategy that is pretty much a Blitzkrieg asset swap.
Rapa Nui (aka Easter Island), where the famous Moai statues are located, IS the easternmost of the major inhabited Pacific islands, and closer to South America than any other continent. But it's still like 3000 miles away (about as far away as Hawaii is from the mainland USA), so the image in the game, which appears to show the South American mainland being visible from Rapa Nui, is still hilariously wrong.
Penetration system works like this: Each side of vehicle has min to max armor stats. Visible stat is average. Weapon penetration is exact value +/- random value. On successful hit, random value from within armor values is matched with random penetration from within penetration values. Also every vehicle has hidden stat which decides chance to fail enemy hit even if it should hit based on spread and distance (mean to represent how hard it is to hit I guess?).
Good review, brings back memories.. got this game for my 8th birthday and finished it albeit with cheats, gonna redownload it and give it a go, if i manage to find it, I personally love it but because of nostalgia mostly Btw if i remember correctly you can use + and - to speed up or slow down the game, so you can avoid the bad traction of wheeled vehicles on snow or desert maps, doing so you will be able to finish the filler defensive missions in literally 30 seconds because the game can go up to +10 speed, just set your infantry in defensive structures and trenches to counter tanks, if it fails just replay it since it takes little time because of the speed up
Believe it or not, this game has a semi-active modding community that makes it into something enjoyable. The most popular mod right now is "Chronicles of Third World War", which greatly expands on the story, available missions and unit roster. For instance, Act 1 of the Soviet campaign is dedicated to performing "police action" in Polish People's Republic that decided to break away from Warsaw Pact (with a little help from Anglo-American expeditionary force), and your starting units are late WW2 surplus (IS-2M, T-44, IL-10M etc). Oh, and the damage model was somewhat fixed, the battles are no longer a coin toss between win and fail.
Resupplying vehicle is slow on snow because of terrain. It's like mud and vehicle doesn't have tracks to move faster. Also the AI can be exploited like killing the tanks from above or behind smoke screen but strategy is worthless. Artillery is the queen of the field.
Fun fact 1C software wanted to make a fallout clone back in 2008 I think but the company pulled the plug on it since the progress and game didn't get enough interest.
This is a a mod of 'Blitzkrieg' a very good game that carries a loyal international following to this very day. (Because modding it lets you do lots of customization.) Try Blitzkrieg. Try Stalingrad which is another mod of it, too. Blitzkrieg is the one that has the actual tutorials that teach you what to do. If you go into a game like this and you haven't played those tutorials, you're going to be frustrated. That said, the game does have a huge flaw: the pathfinding. The pathfinding is absolutely atrocious. Other than that, very good game. It's on steam. Worth a play.
Yeah but i am a sucker for those Blitzkrieg Engine games and I DONT KNOW WHY: WWI: The Great War, Icy Hell, Conflict 2012, Stalingrad, DESERT LAW ... All horrible hahaha but i cant stop. I never beat any of those and sometimes i feel lost or just get wiped out in 2 minutes, but GOD DAMN there is something about the look. Sudden Strike is another one. (Different engine, same vibe)
Don't know the issue with spotting. In the manual it clearly stated you can go prone with infantry to be better concealed. You crawl up to the assumed position of your enemy, park your officer in a bush and use binoculars. Then you can engage the enemy with your tanks making use of your range
I don't think you can give the game points for visuals design this is almost literally a reskin of Blitzkrieg, assets and all. But to be fair, that game also takes the blame for the shitty mechanics and abysmal AI. Still love that one, though. That game eat a lot of my gray mass and lifespan back then. At any rate, I like your style, man. Please keep making these videos.
I’d say only ~50 ish % of units are Blitzkrieg reskins. Most of the map assets (cities, bases) are original. And they are of high quality. Too bad it’s all wasted on shovelware.
Tank Destroyers are probably called Tank Chasers because the German word for them is Panzerjäger or Jagdpanzer. Jäger means hunter but can also be translated as chaser. Tank hunter would make more sense, but hey.
I ended up deleting this bit from the video because I couldn't coherently articulate the thought, but basically: a Russian term for Tank Destroyer (one of several) is Exterminator. It also happens to be their term for the class of aircraft designed to chase down and intercept enemy bombers. I think in the mind of underpaid programmer who ended up translating the UI-related stuff, all these things became conflated.
Similar to Czech "stíhač tanků". "Stíhač" is also used for airplane interceptor so "stíhač tanků" could be translated as tank interceptor but verbatim translation also means tank chaser.
@@ducedevlstear2471 Depending on the context both is possible. When "jagen" is not used as hunt but to quickly follow behind someone ("jemanden hinterherjagen") it can be translated as chasing. But this are several strange corners to think around to get there. Maybe it os french where "chasser" means "jagen" and the Tank destroyer/Jagdpanzer is a "Chasseur de chars"
Young me had a lot of fun with the Bulgarian translation of this game. I save scummed and loved the detailed vehicles. It fueled my tank and vehicle mania byt itself. But as a game, it is very flawed.
That "monstrosity" is the Convair Model 49, which was a coleopter concept for the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System in the sixties. It's still absolutely wacky science fiction, but it comes from the demented minds of American aerospace engineers, not the demented minds of Russian wargame designers.
@@Familyguyfunnymoments_ I guess he/she emphasize the Ruzzians that got killed by that second hand equipment. Ironic tbh since the Ruzzia use and bought second hand equipment too from China, Iran, and North Korea. I guess mobikfuhrer became so desperate for that Soviet Union x Tsarist deep dark fantasy
Actually there is a very obscure scene that does make these types of games with the Blitzkrieg engine. This is one of them. Others are Stalingrad, Talvisota: Icy Hell, and some WWI game i forget the name of (pretty sure it was called simply WWI). The Blitzkrieg game is really a niche taste type of game. It is frustrating and janky from a gameplay perspective, but the games themselves are quite well researched and the battles are spectacular most of the time which kinda balances out the jank. That's why it still has a serious (albeit really small) community up to this day.
I replay blitzkrieg I and II every year. I have probably played thousands of hours. Had it on disk when I was just a boy. Made levels for my friends to play. I wish they didnt drop the ball on Blitzkrieg III so hard.
@@peterdenov4898If it's an offensive operation, just don't bother, it's ridiculously squishy and ANY armored vehicle is able to claim a horrifying number of poor grunts. If it's defensive and you have trenches, infantry does an okay job.
If you want MOW with a TW style strategic map, I recommend checking out Dynamic Campaign Generator. The newest version is only for the first Men of War but its well worth a look at.
Ah yes, this game that when I played it, felt like a juiced up Sudden Strike. Beat it once, never touched it again. The "Chaser/Destroyer" thing is something that oddly enough makes sense to me, as I have seen it before. A naval Destroyer is not called a "Destroyer" in Swedish, but rather a "hunter". And "hunt" is the same word as "chase". Could be something to do with that.
Oh wow, this is literally just cold-war blitzkrieg. Anyway, too bad it seems they worsened resupplly mechanics; they had a winning formula with blitzkrieg 2. Having played it and its expannsion, Fall of the Reich, i can see how this sort of game-balance will feel really frustrating. Tank fights really do feel, transparently, RNG. You can manipulate them a bit by forcing defensive tactics even while on the offensive, attempting to provoke hostiles to attack you. Infantry in trenches are great for this to draw fire.
Honestly, it wasn't that bad. It just felt half finished and the ending was like "wtf that's it?" I only completed the Chinese campaign because there wasn't any payoff in completing the other campaigns given the universal ending. The biggest two annoyances in gameplay were the inability to see enemy units at varying elevation and the incredibly easy defense missions. The radiation environmental hazard was also nice until I realized how tedious it was to clear a path and how often the AI would path through radiation patches and kill itself. I put up with the game because of my niche interest in the period and my liking of the blitzkrieg games of the same engine.
I think you're in the same boat as me and many other buyers of the game, in that we liked the concept so much that we were willing to put up with the flaws in the gameplay. It was a very unique idea and having so many period-specific units to play with, as well as feeling like you could go anywhere you wanted on a strategic map while building up and maintaining a persistent army, was worth putting up with the lackluster gameplay.
This sort of reminds me of the Risk/Total war style game mode in Tiberium Wars Kane's Wrath (PC only) i don't remember playing that game mode very much. Maybe that could be a video topic?
I remember this game, since I also played it. It was my Blitzkrieg-phase so there we go. Especially the chinese campaign was rather interessing. Mostly because they had an additional resource they could use - manpower. They were the only faction that could reinforce infantry squads. So I basically ordered all my squads to attack a fortified position, put supply trucks slightly behind them and set them to reinforce them and all I could see was infantry trying to rush and dying on mass until the enemy was slowly whittled down, or ran out of ammunition - most of the times it was the latte. Fun times. I also tried modding a bit since tanks like the Abrams were hidden in the files.
I only played the Soviet and European campaigns but they were pretty fun. At least until you get to that absolute bullshit 'stealth mission' in the Soviet campaign where you're trying to prevent the POWs from being executed by the Chinese. so far as I can tell that mission was just unwinnable.
I feel like the idea of a "vision" mechanic is actually a really good idea, if only for the fact that these are such huge concepts in real-life wars that go almost completely unrepresented in games for the sake of convenience. The issue with this game is that they neither implemented any sort of conveyance that this mechanic exists or how much you can manipulate it, but also there is absolutely no way to _improve_ your vision. As a result the vision mechanic is not something you have to account for, rather it just remains a handicap. I want someone to make a game that handles this idea better.
One of the most practical uses of "more gun range than visual range" is in C&C3, where one faction has some sort of atillery mech that can only fire it's huge gun when forward positioned infantry units mark targets.
The engima engine (used in Blitzkrieg, TDA/CMC/IC, Stalingrad, WW1, Desert Law) is very long in the tooth now. The sad thing is a lot of the issues you described can and have been fixed. Stalingrad for example fixed the issue with buildings and objects not blocking line of fire. It's a feature easily transplantable back to the original Blitzkrieg. Sadly TDA/CMC/IC is too different, adding radiation and fuel and 3d-mesh based missile based weapon (amongst other things) to port those changes to. The issues with line of sight being too short, the camouflage problems, AA issues (being too effective, or not enough) are all fixable with XML changes. I've done it myself, albeit on the original Blitzkrieg rather than CMC. I've considered porting my mod to CMC to take advantage of the additional features that version of the game engine offers but as your review shows, there are just too many downsides. TLDR, all the issues you mentioned could have so easily been fixed with proper playtesting, porting over features from Stalingrad and XML tweaks. They just couldn't be bothered.
Yeah for example i play the gzm mod with the xml file from stalingrad and works fine , my only problem its maintein the tank formation or preven then pull back with the but to the enemy
And every time you are attacked on the strategic map when you go to the tactical mode -- you always need to attack. So, on a strategic level, they are attacking you, and you are outnumbered 3 to 1 or even worse. You go into Real-Time mode and YOU need to attack the entrenched position, again, being outnumbered 3 to 1. And AI defense always has the AT and AA Artillery, slaughtering all of your vehicles and aircraft at the sight. At the same time, when you defend your facilities, you have only infantry and light-armored personnel vehicles. That's just not fair.
Well, the game has very good atmosphere of nuclear apocalypse. I played it quite a lot and sometimes I stop playing because I wanted just listen to music and watch my tanks before most of them will go to tank heaven or tank hell. But the random battles are nuisance. Most of them are almost the same. Even with few tanks enemy had few squads of infantry with rocket launchers and in most situations they will just act passive and wait in ambush. The air forces are essential to defend territories from the enemy incursions (again with few tanks and a bunch of infantry) but they can win a battle in few minutes. It is almost like auto resolve only better. And a big plus is I've learned much about equipment. And I think that USSR, at least on the beginning is really overpowered while in the second US-UK scenario my M48 Patton tanks which are heavier than Soviet MBT/Medium Tanks were massacred by T-54/55. Overall it wasn't bad game.
The interesting unit lists and feeling of freedom that it gave the players, as well as putting the effort into making unique scenario missions, rescued the game from its flawed mechanics for me. I have fond memories of it.
Everytime I see this game, I want to play it again, only to realize the tactical combat make me bored to tears Thank you for making me feel like that again
First of all....the game is good. Much better than most of the modern games. Second....the publisher was full of original ideas with several actually good and original games. I still remember a countless hours spend with Jagged Union. The graphic is a little under the critic but the game is full of fun. Actually, this video reminded me on those games to play them again.....
Will you do a review of this game cousin Stalingrad? I played both Cuban Missile Crisis and Stalingrad but for some reasons I think Stalingrad is better although still suffer from some of the same flaws. I got both for free so might be something to do with that too.
It’s not completely without character, but yeah. I regret wasting my time on this. Lenin's mausoleum next to Gaza Pyramids was the only memorable part.
I concur. TDA/CMC is a masterpiece compared to that dumpster fire. They didn't even program in the air support properly, so its coded, but has no appear points on the map. You will literally *never* see aircraft, that they bothered to make 3d models, sounds etc for, because they forgot to add 2 seconds worth of map locators when making the maps. Even modders can fix it, but it's really not worth bothering considering how it plays even worse than TDA/CMC does.
I'd (not) recommend WW2 Panzer Claws for that, based on Earth 2150 engine. Possibly the only RTS I dropped not because I lost interest, but because it was just so bad.
I believe they translated tank destroyers as tank chasers because in russian it's истребитель танков, and истребитель being the same russian word for fighter (as in "fighter plane"). Looks like translator decided that "tank fighter" would sound retarded and sticks to older term for "fighter" part of the "fighter plane" that is "chaser" plane. Translator was professional in linguistics but unaccustomed to military terminology, it seems.
this is like a ghetto prototype for Men of War, but looks like blitzkrieg... and why does blitzkrieg look so much like sudden strike? what's the connection there?
Why in this game factories are considered like ancient, impossible to recreate artifacts? I mean, if they are so desperate for factories, they can just build them...
Every generic Blitzkrieg 1 mission was also the same Step 1: Artillery fire Step 2: Send the tanks Step 3: Victory (because of a lack of AI) ...but the game was great for his time and a good alternativ to Sudden Strike...not comparable with the today´s standarts. Check out Sudden Strike 4, no AI and it's from 2017.
i swear to god i played a game like this or something in Vietnam or the cold war bc i remember these same graphics but with a russian helicopter and a mini soldier that came out of a rundown barracks
A lot of the problems with the game are simply a result of the reviewer's unfamiliarity with how it supposed to be played. This is pretty much a Blitzkreig 1.75 (game already had like 3 expansions at that point) which itself carried on formula and mechanics from Sudden strike. A bit like starting HoMM experience with Shadow of Death campaign and missions - was not made for the first time player and would bully you with "unfair" content. The game expects you to know how to go about solving the "issues" described - vision cones, anti air, resupply and refueling - in a timely and comfortable fashion given that you've had to deal with them in hundreds of previous missions.
The game uses the same engine in which the game Stalingrad was made - It is a game inspired by the Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg series by the looks of it - isomentric artwork meets 3D vehicle units, tanks with actual different armor over front, side and rear and lots of different unit types working together. But something is a little off - the detail about the camo-effect of static units appears in Stalingrad too. It's a really good attempt but somehow i cant decide wether just masss-blob strats of methodical working out enemy positions is the most effective and or enjoyble way to make the game work. Anyways...
I'm not a fan of limited ammo and fuel. While it might be more realistic, having to micromanage each unit is just painful. At least in real life, those units will have the brains to get to refuel and rearm themselves.
this game reminds me of a really niche game called 'Cold War Conflicts' that came out in the 90's, it had the same style of gameplay, tanks running our of ammo, supply trucks, infantry can crew vehicles, kill vehicle crews, and many artillery guns, its rather scary how similar these two games are, with this one only looking slightly better graphically.
Amazing game, playing it now for the second time after almost 12 years. If you are obsessed not to lose any unit don't play it! if you are Ok to through big attacks based on primitive recon and lose some loved ranked tanks, go ahead and you will have fun.
I remember buying that game a long time ago. couldn't even instal it for some reason. never knew what it was about. had Red Alert 2. couldnt care less.
I played this game when it was new. I thought I just bad at this game. Turns out it was a poorly made Blitzkrieg reskin. I did find that getting a ridiculous amount of ground attack jets as the US/UK basically wiped everything off the map.
Man I loved this game when I was a teen, the one i liked most was Ice Crusade, it started my love of Object 279 :) I never really found it boring, i just thought it was really hard and to be honest I love a crazy concept delivered with a straight face, my biggest issue with Red Alert 3 was that they made it too much of a joke while Red Alert 2 was basically a perfect balance.
The kind of absolutely bonkers backstory that requires the right mindset to get into. C&C RA did it and people either love the weirdness or don't play it in the first place. I've never met someone who said they really liked the game but found the story silly.
Blitzkrieg was a really good game. I've always liked RTS games and my friend recently introduced it to me. It's obviously old and clunky and some game mechanics (particularly line of sight) are kind of broken, but I feel like it provides a pretty realistic take on WW2 era combat.
I find it hilarious that CoH3's Italian invasion campaign is quite a lot like this. While no doubt it is a better experience in some ways, the structure of the campaign is almost as boring. And I love the Total War style but if there is no depth in the strategic map gameplay why bother?
There's a stand alone game that comes in several version- Mars Wars, Doom Wars, UAC wars. They're all the same product really. Its a doom based RTS game, think its a mod of either Warhammer 2 or command and conquer if I had to guess, that's pretty fun and free to download and play. Small file at that. Never really left the alpha stages though. give it a look sometime its down your alley.
I think what fucks with me is that the joint French-German european forces in this game are basically, for the most part, WWII vehicles. And the wrong ones. Post-war france and germany both got a bunch of loaned american tanks and vehicles after the war, and mostly didn't get around to making their own stuff until the mid 60s (at least nothing effective). Most of the surviving nazi-german armored force was dismantled. This isn't that well represented here. The Bundeswehr certainly didn't drive around in Panzer 4s, which would have been pretty ancient by the 1960s. And this game has a lot of experimental and paper tiger vehicles for the other factions, and some they made up themselves...so why not do the same for the Euro forces? Why not give them more stuff like the AMX-10/30 or the Leopard 1 or maybe some fictional super tank hunter like Red Alert 2? Dunno, seems pretty weird to me, because the kind of russian war nerds who usually develop games like these can come up with better stuff.
So i know this is three years later, but if you wnt the total war map mode cold war game map, maybe look at Warno. Its Army General mode is really great, and its co op and competitive coop.
nice vid i only have one problem with everything you said. as a hetzer fan it is everything but Czech it was a German tank developed in Germany the only thing that makes it remotely Czech is it was based off the Czech panzer 38.
9:00 the Puma is a wheeled vehicle and is driving slower because of the type of terrain it is going over, not because of a hill. The fuel truck had the same issue earlier in the video trying to reach the tank. The game is 2.5D so hills are visually represented too.
How dare you say that about 1Company! They made my favourite games when I was a teen. Like Space ranger 2 And Star Wolfes 2.... you know what, yeah they are shit!
