Cube Houses hang on pylons like a forest canopy in Rotterdam

Tilted at a 55 degree angle Rotterdam’s “Cube Houses” (Kubuswoningen) seem to defy gravity.
Dreamed up by architect Piet Blom in the 1970s to help the city turn a downtown overpass into housing, this oblique housing was Blom’s attempt to defy the idea that “a building has to be recognizable as a house for it to qualify as housing.”
Blom perched each slanted cubic residence on a pillar to create individual “tree” houses and connected them all to form an urban “forest”.
Lilian raised her son Mitch in their cube home and while the square footage is small (some are just 240 square feet), the cubic footage is much larger. There are no straight exterior walls and opening or closing a window can be a battle with gravity.
Today, Lilian and Mitch run their home as a guesthouse, but they said living in the home meant keeping possessions to a minimum. “A lot of people bring a lot of stuff into their house, but then you lose the effect of the building because already it has it's own vibes, or it’s own atmosphere.”
The Cube Houses are now one of the city’s top tourist attractions, and an Instagram favorite. One of the two extra-large “super cubes” is now a hostel.

maybe the designer did a bad job since he forgot furniture and solutions for the modern form. I Tokyo they had this tiny cubes (also not working) that provided at least everything needed in an integrated furniture. Here you only ged contorted walls and have to find solutions yourself. poor job.

I looked into those houses a bit more, and apparently there were originally supposed to be several blocks of these, all built for the private housing sector. But as they were building the first block, they realised that noone wanted to buy them. So they proposed them as office spaces, noone wanted them either. So in the end they made them into council housing - hence the half-way home - and never built the other planned blocks. Quite the failure.

I would like to see the cubes in different colors on the outside. The inside would take some getting used to....but a really creative person would have a lot of fun designing useful furniture. A few murals on the walls would be nice, too. Most of all...I'm thinking about all the wasted space...BUT there is LOTS of potential for suspending things like pendant lighting....hanging plants....suspended shelving....even macramé hangings and curtains would give a more vertical feel in places. Even a clothes rod in some of the angular spaces could provide clothing storage opportunities....and a curtain in front of it would give a vertical sense to the room. There's lots of opportunity here....but it would certainly not be for everyone. I grew up in my grandfather's home, and he was a carpenter....I swear the man would not sleep nights if something wasn't level or at the perfect right angle. He'd NEVER get any sleep if he saw this house!!! LOL

@Carlos Garza No. Because a house ought to take into consideration the needs of the people living there FIRST and offer them good LIVING design. These houses are self indulgent in their "Look at me, look at me!" design. They're designed as anomalies... to catch people's attention. The Architect was thinking of himself FIRST, of his reputation for doing something original and noticeable, rather than taking into consideration the vast waste of space, the disorientating element, etc. You HAVE TO BE a minimalist to live there. Rather than the house catering to the needs of a family, the people who live there must bend themselves to the house. THAT is what makes it a failure; the house and the Architect's self importance. HOWEVER, I think it is a fabulous design for an airbnb/hotel accommodation as it offers something completely different/original and THAT is exactly what people are seeking when traveling. In THAT capacity, these would be a great success.

I visited the cube houses earlier this week. Inspiring that the architect took such a bold, experimental and pioneering approach. Visually they are superb and the "villagey" courtyard works. However, I don't think these properties really work as places to live on the interior. Each room is compromised by a lack of usable space, storage options and an enforced need to purpose-build the furniture. In effect, they are a caravan. There's a lack of usable wall space to hang artworks (which I guess is not important to everyone) so it's difficult to personalise. Also, they appear as though they may be a maintenance nightmare...the walls are very exposed to the weather on all sides meaning there's a crucial need for insulation and repair/redecoration solutions. The rooms are very overlooked by neighbouring properties so that human intimacy and privacy is compromised. I can see why this experiment was not repeated and why so many of the properties are not functioning as real homes rather than architectural showpieces. This woman and her son don't live there surely...an empty fridge, fire-extinguisher and no sense of personalisation...all the hallmarks of a costly AirBnB!!

This might fit into the category of "hostile architecture" in that it's uncomfortable for people. The woman giving the tour keeps noting that there's not enough room to store things, that the windows fly out (unsafe for children), that you have to watch your head, so you don't bump it, that the couch is ugly, and there's little privacy. Also, some people would experience vertigo and it's inaccessible to anyone who has a physical disability. It's like the leaning benches in my city that you can't actually sit on; they're just used for advertising space.

Seems like way more consideration was given to how it would look from the outside than how livable it would be on the inside. Not impressed at all, tbh. Part of living in a small space is becoming very good at "real-life tetris" as I like to call it. Making use of every available square inch to store your things and keep them out of the way. Seems damn near impossible to do that here, you have to just have next to no possessions which is just silly. Could have oriented the cubes right-side up and connected them at the corners. Would've still looked incredibly cool but would also be, ya know, practical and not such an egregious waste of livable space. Something like this is far more intelligent, imo, while still looking quirky and playful and surreal and being of a similar architectural style. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitat_67

That was really cool but made me really dizzy haha 😵‍💫 Also the main stair wells gave me anxiety lol. Like omg those steps were so small!!!

My G-d. The carbon monoxide fumes must be horrendous in those places above the road unless they are air tight with airlock entrances! And then what would you do for fresh air? Sorry. Does not seem healthy at all. Having said that, I think I would love the challenging space and unusual windows if the place was in the countryside!

It's almost like we are not ready to live like this. It's too futuristic and bold. But it's pretty fantastic. I went to have a look at these. On the same trip I saw the rietveld house..and these explore similar subversion to conventional living.

I am sorry but this seems like a really shitty place to live. It is beautiful and everything and must be amazing for children - but functionally it lacks everything a normal home has, just seems like a huge pain in the ass, you know? Also of course the skyline is pyramids, interesting.

A hostel next to people who were incarcerated, with crooked walls, all built over a busy road. What could go wrong. Those walls would make me seasick all the time. Interesting theory, but not sure how it translates to real life. Some ideas are just TOO crazy.

Aesthetically amazing, but interior functionality is wanting. More spaces are lost in favor in the name of artistry versus functionality. If you are bored and depress, you better stay here, because it brings your amazement.

Horrible living space! Who the hell pays for that must be really stupid! Also 10000 steps to move around..... GG architects!

Sad, looks like a prison. I understand the idea of using the overpass pilings and I do love the slant away walls but I would want it on level ground : ) and not hanging at an angle, I have vertigo. Idea was good but instead of so many small units, make each unit much larger. Even if on government housing, this is too small. Tiny living should be a choice and not forced via subsidy. Thanks tho, it is novel.

I have known the outside of these for years and not really liked them. Living in them would literally made me loose my balance, sionce nothing is straight or naturally curved.

typical concept house. cool on the outside, sucks as a livingspace on the inside... this happens when you let a minimalist urban architect roam free without some sane, down to earth person keeping him or her in check. think what happens when you cant climbe stairs or if there's a fire... the owner may sound happy now, but i can imagine the bitchin' about things that are not or only partially working, when the camera's not around :-)

It's a cool concept, looks really interesting from inside, but man is that yellow colour hideous! together with the awkward angle and repititiveness it wins the price for the ugliest building in Rotterdam. I always cringe when i walk next to it, its an extremely unpleasant experience.

This reminds me of what my brother told me one time when we were Young, there are two kinds of smarts, one.that think they are smart, n are smart, and there or some that think they are smart and their dumb as he** and don't even know it. This definitely qualifies for the one that thinks their smart. well you know rest of the story This is beyond stupidity, there's no way this can be normal to live in, sorry but this doesn't take rocket science to rellize that this is something that you would see in a science fiction movie. REALLY.

This seems like a failure. though intresting idea. Now you realize that cubes are only usefull when not tilted. Round might have been a better idea. this doesn t feel like a hundred square meters. the views are intresting and the proximity is nice. Still the cooking / livin space is to tiny and light could be much better considering that they are "trees". I would like to see this done with forms that are more functional and use the light aspect of a tree more.

This definitely falls in the category of form over function. But it's cool someone in the world has tried this. But I had to stop watching because I felt sick. The people who live there are lovely, and it seemed like it works for them.

very artful..not for me re: living inside one but fun to see the interior..and the outdoor views of the property are refereshing to look at..makes what would commonly be a cold-appearing automobile thoroughfare environment actually comforting too see.

And I might add, very unstable architectural structures. If these kinds of buildings worked well long term, our world would look very different than it does. Sorry, but breaking the laws of physics has consequences...such as how the hell are you going to convince anyone to want to live in that!

It looks cool on the outside, but I found the inside quite claustrophobic. It wasn't obvious how you'd get out if there was a fire. I know they pointed to emergency escape doors on other buildings, but I didn't see how you could get out of this one if the buildings were on fire.

nice like art, but not very smart like house. All fornitures must be customized for fitting. I don't understand why architects have to do some so strange and not confortable.

the comments here made me realize why making any sort of change is going to be difficult on large scale, such low level of tolerance and imagination... no wonder we never moved much in this area despite several centuries worth of technological progress.

unfortunately, sometimes stupid is just stupid and in rotterdam's architecture, there is a lot of stupid and this is one fine example of such. This city has been ruined by post-modern, deconstructivist, idiocratic architecture.
@Qeisama

The very definition of postmodern deconstructivism architecture. The fragmented building, the slanted wall. An exploration by a professor of architecture perhaps?

I like that this place exists but it far too inefficient space wise you seem to have to live around it rather than in it. that being said . . . the cupola at the top is wicked cool, I'd have to deck it out as an epic man-cave/sci-fi spaceship bridge.

This video mind blowing I would say these are cool art pieces but not a functional home it'd be great for a hotel. I'm really impressed with the camera guy holding the camera straight in that home must have been a challenge.
