Growl's name in Japanese would be more accurately translated as "cry". So the orphaned baby Pokemon will do nothing but cry, then struggle, _then_ learn to actually fight.
And Water Gun because Cubone's tears. (Also partially unrelated but Jigglypuff and Wigglytuff knowing Water Gun and Thunder Wave due to Balloon physics.)
I tried this a couple weeks ago without looking at Cubones starting moves and immediately NOPED out upon seeing the first battle. Mega excited to watch!
I love doing underused Pokémon/weird challenges all the time, but there comes a time when you have to evaluate something not being worth it lol. The pain and agony by far outweighs the bragging rights of the accomplishment 😅
@@_Paul_N Anything that starts with only Astonish is truly the worst. At least growl weakens them, a solid majority of early game trainers are literally immune to astonish, so it's doing nothin' And yet, I've sat through that
They're all exactly the same. Pick a pokemon without an attack, use struggle until it gets an attack, play normally. If you watched more than one, you need a hobby.
8:35 Eevee is a mash-up of multiple mammals. It's like a cross between a dog, a cat, a rabbit, and a (fennec) fox. I think its species is deliberately vague so that it can have all those Eeveelutions.
That's the whole point. Eeve is just supposed to be a cute, fluffy mammal creature. Not a specific one in particular, just an adorable looking mammal so that almost everyone will love it. Don't know why some people fight over whether it's a dog or a cat, when it's clearly a mix of both.
@@evawhite1144I'd say Dog as in domestic dog is the only thing it isn't. Rabbit, Cat, fox? Sure. And the evolutions all lean in one or two of those directions too. But the only one that's even a little canid is Jolteon, which is pretty thoroughly fox territory.
@@jesusinsua4089 Cubone is evidence that abilities were introduced in Gen 1. And it's obvious that Venomoth is not Bug/Poison. If you look at the website it will clearly state that it is Electric/Grass.
Cubone is my FAV! Also... YES Do the Oak fight as a victory lap from now on! I wish they kept this fight in the game and its interesting to see how pokemon stack up to the true strongest trainer in the game.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon electric types are awful in hoenn too There are A TON of ground types and no electrabuzz Ironically the only good encounter is chinchou and that's not until the 8th gym Worst yet alot of those coverage moves electric types get ARE NOT UNTIL THE POKEMON LEAGUE When you have to use Leer yes you heard it CORRECT LEER into explosion or Leer secret power as your go to strategy vs ground types That's how you know electric types are awful in hoenn
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon cubone does have a great moveset dig eq fireblast ice beam blizzard bubblebeam and body slam That being said the lack of speed really hurt it I don't think diglett will fare much better because it really doesn't take hits well But diglett does have slash earthquake n speed My prediction level 75 for diglett
I honestly want to see a Marowak video, the stat increase might be enough to actually make the attack spam strategy more viable. Maybe Substitute would be a good idea too
It might but Marowak''s special is not much improved but its Atk stat is 80 over Cubones 50 so thats something for sure. And it is a tiny bit faster with 45
I can really tell the effort you're putting into your videos. They just keep getting better and better. Love the new addition at the end this time too!
Yeah, he really deserves a much larger following. Several of the larger runners (while still good) don't have half the production value. I just hope he isn't overworking himself.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon this makes me very happy. Absolutely love your content and I'm glad we can keep getting awesome new videos without having to worry about your mental and emotional well-being. I love watching the videos you and jrose put out, each with your own flavor and purpose.
Its quite nostalgic going back to watch these older videos again, and seeing the old overlay. Just shows how much this channel keeps improving, things like this are the reason why this has become the only solo run channel i watch anymore. Its just so much better than all of the others.
Love the wrapping lass' sprite, but I think the self-destructing hiker also deserves one! I think diglet is an interesting one, being one of the biggest glass cannons in the game!
No need to CRY, Cubone! If you need a REST, just take one! Awesome video! Also, Cubone has some weird beta stuff with it! So does Marowak! Also, Marowak’s backsprite had spikes in this game, which have since disappeared! Strange that Cubone still has them!
Btw I love this time slot I get to listen to these while I’m working on cars and just makes fridays more enjoyable to me since I know I always have to work on Saturday.
10:25 that caught me by surprise! I was watching but I often fall asleep listening so you reading out stats is such a nice surprise. So considerate, really put a smile on my face, thanks
MY BABY BOY! Marowak was my favorite Pokémon until gen 5 came around. So Cubone has always had a special place in my heart. I’ve done solo runs with Cubone/Marowak in Fire Red and Heart Gold and they were absolute trials. Glad to see someone else likes Cubone more than Pikachu
9:03 Glad you didn't use the Rare Candy. 11:38 I wonder if crit mattered. 12:58 Well, you did get Paralysis, lol. 14:41 Wow. 29:11 Yay! Anyway, neat analysis & run video! Thanks for uploading!
Loved the sketch out of the Pokemon in the beginning Scott!!! You should totally make this a permanent fixture in your videos that's an awesome reveal!
I'm glad you left Agatha's fight in, it's important to see these last battles! Might throw off the whole video if we, for some reason, didn't get to see one of the Elite Four members! Great vid, always enjoy your runs!
"But I'll leave her in just because she's an elite four member it'd be kinda weird to omit one of them." Skips over Bruno, damn I guess we really don't talk about him. Also, I loved this run because Marowak is my favorite gen one pokemon.
Your numerous accuracy misses with Cubone had me thinking the poor creature had it's skull on backwards... much like with it's fight against Pikachu in the anime. It's also ironic that Cubone doesn't have Swords Dance as a set-up move given it's later Alolan form. Surprisingly poor results for Cubone here but at least it got to show off that it was strong enough to beat the toughest challenges of the game. The video was very entertaining with it's Sneak 100 joke (never knew of that nugget), the Slowbro conversation and seeing the commission rapping lass art return. Also, looking forward to that upcoming video featuring my favourite Ground type Pokémon (my very first Pokémon team included him).
Hey Scott, I've been wondering this for a while and with the dunking on Pikachu in this video it seems like an appropriate place to suggest it: if you take your pikachu through Master Ball Cup round 2 in Pokemon Stadium you can teach it surf and this is *technically* possible to do before you even fight the first rival (with the original, japanese only pokemon stadium), so I wonder how much better Pikachu could perform if you did a run where it started with Surf to deal with all of those pesky ground types. It could be an interesting and (hopefully) pretty quick challenge to take a look at, I think!
I'm not really surprised Cubone did so bad since Marowak is probably one of the worst Ground-types in Gen I...really makes you appreciate the Thick Club even more. The fact that it doesn't get Swords Dance in this generation also really hurts. Great content as always~
This was fun to watch. Brings back many good memories. Yellow was my first pokemon game when I was 18. It's so weird how it's the only old game that hasn't gotten a remake. Let's Go doesn't count, lol.
@@MidnightSonnet thinking about it, that wouldn't be bad at all. I do miss yellow, and yea let's go don't count. I wonder if a rom hack like that exists
@@johnapple6646 Yellow was quite an upgrade from the previous games and I really miss bucketchu, bonding with Pikachu, seeing the hearts above his head, and hearing him call out. 💛 I'd love to see that in 3D. I'm sure there's a rom somewhere, but I'd love an official release. I'm never really excited for Pokemon games anymore. I look forward to them, but I'm never super hyped. I'd be over the moon excited for a Yellow remake. They could call it Electric Yellow, to go with the theme of the remakes for the titles of Red and Green. :)
Cubone has always been my absolute favorite pokemon. I'm so glad to see you doing a challenge with it. When I was a kid Cubone was the reason Whitney never gave me trouble in Gen 2.
Loving your vids. Small nitpick, the crit chance in Gen 1 is half the pokemon's base speed, rounded down, divided by 256. That's very similar to - but not quite as simple as - dividing the base speed by 512, due to the rounding, which matters if the base speed is an odd number. Here, Cubone's crit chance is 6.64%, not 6.84%. This is based on the calculation from Bulbapedia where the Floor function is shown when determining the crit threshold value.
I've been really wanting to do a Cubone or Marowak run as a serious speedrun type but I saw that they get the shaft in Yellow. A shame, because their stats and movepool would essentially let them buzzsaw the whole game... in Red/Blue. Not Yellow, though. Awesome run! Really happy to see more Yellow runners, it's such a great game and the free Pokemon like Charmander and Squirtle let you skip capturing HM subs.
Cubone's such a cute strong Pokemon, should've been an alternate starter instead of Pikachu. Cubone can hold it's own against many tough enemies, even in Kanto and Johto.
Thanks to this channel I now am never confident as to what is actually super effective against Venemoth as I don’t know if Scott is saying his move is super effective against its actual typing or it’s made up typing. Love the content man! Inspiring me to start up my own channel
I love your videos Scott they help me go to bed every night before work and when I get home I just pick up where I left off while eating dinner and repeat it throughout the week I'm glad you're enjoying making these videos
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I'd love to see it! Bone Club might be a pain to actually get in a speedrun (5% on wild cubone) but on a casual playthrough it could be okay. And at least he gets Brick Break and Rock Slide I guess?
I am continuously amazed by how great each of your videos is. These overlays are insanely good and I can only think about how long this takes to edit. So much props!
I realize this is a months-old video, but my theory is that the reason Cubone can learn Fire Blast is that it looks *suspiciously* like a Charmander whose tail has gone out that's wearing a skull of a dead Charizard.
It feels almost like poetic irony that Cubone facing a Jolteon at the very end of Yellow Version is technically impossible considering how free that matchup sounds. Also I agree that Cubone is cuter than Pikachu, more interesting as well. EDIT: 26:50 Is just gold. Way to subtly dunk on Bruno.
With Blaine, I think that you had more unfavorable damage ranges, so a higher level may have actually made it harder. I may be wrong, but that's my theory. Also, I love how you don't even acknowledge Bruno now. Poor Bruno. 🤣
Thanks for telling speed for us listeners. I'm grinding in my nuzlocke so I don't get to see everything unfortunately. That reminds me, I hope you do another nuzlocke soon!
Probably been mentioned already, but the reason Cubone can learn Fire Blast is because the animation (大) and the Japanese name is Daimonji, a bonfire lit during a Japanese festival where in folklore the spirits of the dead are said to return and visit - particularly deceased family members... so Cubone is using the fire in honour/remembrance of its deceased mother. :( As to why Aerodactyl can learn it... er... I guess because it is of a species that should be extinct... so it is like a spirit that is returning to the world...? ...Yeah, that one is a lot more of a stretch.
No matter how this run goes, we all know that Cubine is a tragic chad: yes, he is a sad boi, but he is a sad boi that can make the mighty MEWTWO quake in his boots!
I'm enjoying these runs. You have actually inspired me to try a "Nuzzlock". Problem is I'm already having to resist soo many glitches and ration my tm and money. These challenges aren't so bad.. but not letting my pokemon evolve over and over just kills me inside. I'm doing a run with Mankey. Other than letting it evolve everything else is Nuzzlock. I'm up to Koga and this thing is a monster 👹 lol
Great video again, after Mewtwo you could start battling Prof Oak he is the real final challenge in this game hidden in the endless glitches in this game
I have always loved adding Cubone to my teams growing up playing Yellow and Red. Recently been thinking about trying a solo run with Cubone/Marowak. This video has been great in figuring out my strategy....first gotta finish my Haunter solo run first 😁
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Blue actually. Playing the OG game with no game shark so had to figure out the quickest way to get a Gastly and then get it trained up for Surge.
Oh yea, I'm curious why Game Freak felt removing the Oak secret boss fight? It would have been cool to fight the professor you've been helping and a decent prize if you catch all 150 Pokemon (we all know getting Mew without a glitch) other than a screenshot diploma. That would have remain for all other future Pokemon games too!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Would be a better reward than just "Hey, you collected all of these hard Pokemon, here's this screenshot". I wonder why the Professor Oak battle was removed? Feels wrong
I love the additional content at the end. I'm sure a load of people missed that, but I always watch until the end. Your bloopers are terrific. Too bad your girlfriend evolved, because we don't hear about her anymore.
