When psychologist Dr Michelle Haslam moved in at the Nagarjuna Kadampa Meditation Centre she assumed her communal living with NKT followers would fast-track her to greater levels of mindfulness. But even with her years of professional training, she was unprepared for the control and manipulation that awaited.

One has to be rather weak minded to feel “vulnerable”. I don’t doubt that there are a few NKT followers who get lofty and seek some higher status. It’s better to challenge people’s false superiority.

I have been studying and practicing Buddhism for 30 years and I've had the oposite experience. I have visited NKT centers all around the world and there hasn't been a single moment when I have been asked for money or to give up anything. Furthermore I have been able to heal mi mind at a very deep level. I'm no longer active with them but I think Buddha's teachings are the most precious gift a human can ever receive. We also have to remember that when practicing at communal places we are dealing with other humans, and then there is a lot of room for error. If some people screwed up that doesn't represent the whole community or their intentions in any way. I think your experience as any other experience of this world is subjective, and depends completely on how you internalize things. Much blessings.

I am not a follower of the new Kadampa, but I have visited temples and done volunteer work, and there is simply no sign of cult behavior in the tradition. I believe this is simply a view of the inability of Americans to embrace any culture and philosophy that "confronts" their cultural and military hegemony. All this cult talk is basically ocidental propaganda and chinese prejudice. Furthermore, the Dalai Lama is not immune to criticism, nor is Tibetan Buddhism. For centuries Tibet had a society based on slavery, and during the conflicts with China the Dalai and his brother supplied weapons to rebels and cooperated with the CIA. Not to mention the Dalai's friendship with Heinrich Harrer, a card-carrying Nazi.

I have always found Buddha’s teachings fascinating and 17 years ago I first decided to become Buddhist. 5 years ago I started attending classes by the NKT and joined their Dharma study program. I have only had very positive experiences would recommend the NKT to anyone with an interest in studying and practising Buddhism. Michelle I am sorry you have had bad experiences. I think by nature human’s are capable of abuse but I personally don’t feel the structure of NKT is to blame.

@catherinemitchell944

I think there is a big difference between ‘Dharma know-it-alls’ and those who have taken the essence of Buddha’s teachings to heart; not just having gathered a lot of information, but having gained deep experience of its meaning to be able to use it in the way that Buddha intended - to benefit others. There’s a big difference between saying that things don’t exist and that things don’t exist inherently. It is only because phenomena lack inherent/independent existence that they function, that causes produce effects, that suffering is experienced and must be alleviated. I think that to say, ‘Nothing exists so nothing matters’, is to have misunderstood Buddha’s teachings on emptiness and veered to an extreme. If that were true, then what the heck is the point of training the mind in compassion through practice of Dharma?! There’s also a difference between modern mindfulness training and the use of mindfulness in Buddhism as a ‘mental tool’ to hold the object of meditation in mind without forgetting it. The essence of Buddhadharma is cherishing others by holding a mind of loving-kindness towards them and allowing speech and actions to be motivated by that. So Dharma advice should always be given sensitively, with empathy and kindness, with a wish to help others. If it isn’t, then I can’t help feeling the whole point of training the mind in compassion and wisdom has been lost. With love from an NKT Practitioner

Thanks Christina. I have seen it. I wasn’t around in the early days of the NKT when the programme was made, so I can’t speak about how things were back then. I can only speak from my own personal experience. Over the past 14 years, I have found Geshe Kelsang Gyatso to be a non-deceptive person whose intention has been to teach Buddhadharma in a clear, concise and comprehensive way for modern people to integrate into busy life, without losing the purity or original meaning of Buddha’s teachings. Geshe-la asked his own Spiritual Guide, Trijang Rinpoche, if it was ok to change the presentation of Tibetan Buddhism for westerners/modern people, and he said, “Cool, run with it!” or words to that effect. (Sorry I can’t remember his actual words that Gen-la Dekyong has shared in her teachings.) “People have choice,” are Geshe-la’s exact words, as are these words from his book ‘Joyful Path of Good Fortune’: “Reliance upon a Spiritual Guide is called the ‘root of the path’ because all other spiritual realizations of Sutra and Tantra depend upon it. The many branches and fruits of our Dharma practice are sustained and nourished by the root of reliance upon our Spiritual Guide. Just as in our ordinary education we need to rely upon the help of well-qualified teachers to guide us from the level of nursery school to the completion of college or university training, so in the spiritual training that leads to full enlightenment we need to rely upon a well-qualified Spiritual Guide. Such a deep root cannot be planted hastily. We need to become acquainted with someone who has all the qualifications of a Spiritual Guide, and gradually gain confidence through their teaching and example so that we can rely completely upon their guidance. Our relationship with our Spiritual Guide is the very source of all spiritual attainments, therefore we must be sure that he or she possesses all the necessary qualifications…” Geshe-la goes on to list the qualities that a fully qualified Mahayana Spiritual Guide should possess and the qualities that a Mahayana disciple should possess to enable the relationship to work well. I believe that Geshe-la would only want people to rely on him so as to grow their own wisdom to become their own Spiritual Guide eventually, with the ability to solve their own inner problems and to benefit others joyfully and effectively. As a student of Geshe-la, I have found that the encouragement is not to follow blindly, but to develop our own wisdom and discrimination. This would also go for taking vows and receiving empowerments. Spiritual commitments, like any important commitments in life, should surely be made with as good an intention and understanding of what you are doing as possible; not because someone else thinks it’s a good idea or you feel pressured into it - that never turns out well, does it? I think I remember in the programme there was some concern expressed about the teachings on the hell realms, but I think these are common to all forms of Buddhism - perhaps I am wrong? My understanding from Geshe-la’s books is that all the different realms of existence are mere appearance to mind, not separate from the mind perceiving them, so hellish or heavenly experiences are created with our own mind/actions; they are not given to us by some external entity as either a punishment or a reward, and they don’t exist inherently/without depending on the mind. According to the Madhyamika-Prasangika school (one of the four philosophical schools of Buddhism), nothing exists separate from the mind, not even Buddha. This is why Geshe-la says in the programme that if someone has a pure mind they may see him as a Buddha and that this will be beneficial for them. In my view, seeing someone as a Buddha and holding them as your Spiritual Guide is a really personal matter and not something to try and force upon anyone else. And, if one did catch oneself getting fanatical after receiving teachings or empowerment, and going back home and trying to convert everyone, Gen-la Khyenrab’s advice that he once gave in a teaching was just to: “Calm down… have a cup of tea.”

My abusive ex-partner (training to become an NKT teacher) and who definitely has narcissistic traits used exactly these teachings to justify abusing me emotionally and physically and try to manipulate me into believing that his abuse was an experience produced by my troubled mind or that he might be an enlightened being just having to do that so as to awake me. No remorse for anything. When I tried to show him the distortions in his belief system (where is the love and the compassion that he is preaching?) he accused me of something like my whole existence is but bad karma for being such a sceptic. He presented himself as a spiritual person and I fell for that but when I realized that he was by deep conviction spiritually-washing all this abuse that he made me suffer I started understanding that there was no hope at all...

Meeting with this tradition has been the greatest blessing of my life and I'm truely grateful for the wisdom I have learnt. One just needs a sense of logic and common sense. A practitioner would get into trouble if proven they hurt you. Never good to get “brainwashed” on how to think because it’s never going to end up positive when someone is in charge of your thinking.

I don't just think that the word "cults" refers to a selection of religious/organisations, ALL religions are cults in my eyes because every religion is passionate about controlling lives by telling people how they should live their own life's which in itself is very culty. Also let's not forget that most religions do practice shunning, no person should be treated in this way just because they either stop believing or they wanna join another religion or they stop believing in God, no excuse for it. You don't need me to tell you that shunning is a very cult like practice. The love bombing in religions are also very cult like especially when that person decides to leave, that love vanishes instantly. It just goes to show how fake religions are.

Not doubting this happened but my experience with NKT is completely different from yours. I go to a general practise class once a week and have learn a different way to think and I have become more compassionate to other people. I am much less angry and have more patients. Really its changed my life in nothing but a positive way. At no point does it feel like anyone is "feeding me lies". In fact I often think that everyone in the world could use some of these teachings. The world is totally screwed up right now and we could all learn to become a little more compassionate. I hope this video doesn't turn people off from this. There are waayyyyy worse things in the world to be focusing on.

The GP classes are good and one can gather some great stuff to incorporate into daily life. But if you ever decide to move up to foundation program or teacher training, don't ignore that inner voice that says "something about what he/she just said doesn't sound right," if it should ever arise. It's not self cherishing. It's not delusion. It's your own inner judgement looking after your best interest.

These videos vilifying the whole of the NKT are breaking my heart. I have been associated with this Buddhist organisation for nearly 30 years. I have always been inspired by the teachings and meditations. I have never come across any conflict or bad vibes at any event I’ve attended. As well as being inspired, I always get to make new friends too. So, it seems strange for me that people have such different experiences at NKT events. I have never been bullied or any thing like that. If I ever felt affronted or abused in any way I would say my piece and give them a bollocking. If such uncomfortable behavior was prevalent I would have slung my hook decades ago!

I’m with you, Maria. I’ve been studying NKT texts for a good while now. I haven’t witnessed any trauma or experienced it. I think maybe it comes down to whether one has clear understandings of the teachings or not. Like they say…”don’t take my word for it, go find out for yourself.” In my experience, it is a pure and clean teaching of how to understand the mind. It’s very helpful on how to study oneself and improve your own life for the better. I’m truly grateful to have a local center with good people and clear teachings.

Buddha taught the middle way. Between laziness and fanaticism. In any organisation there will be a small minority of unskilful people, who are not perfect and do not act in line with the whole organisation. Saying that, there are lot of very misguided therapists who think there view is somehow right. They cause much damage to their clients because they lack skill. I don’t doubt that she felt aggrieved. I don’t doubt that she had bad experiences which were in part caused by people there. Which would need investigation. I do doubt her total generalisation of a an entire organisation and its members. Her conclusions do not match with thousands of other people’s experiences of the organisation. Not saying her views are not valid and important but I would like to see things from other points of view. Were there other explanations? Did she herself, or her thoughts, exaggerate what she believed to have happened. If you look up the word cult, you’ll understand what that is. In complete contrast at the NKT People make their own choices, are not forced, are provided with different ways to consider things, are very open and welcoming, and are accepting of all faiths and faculties of all the beings that find themselves at a meditation class. People can drop in for sessions, but if they want to commit to understanding their mind and Buddhist psychology then they can go deeper. I know many psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, Doctors, nurses, teachers, very intelligent people who are warm and extremely kind at the NKT. I’ve been a member for 25 years. To say it’s a cult is just sad, and extremely damaging to many people who may have an opportunity to meet profound and clear teachings near them. What is true, as Buddha himself said, is that mental delusions or afflictive emotions are the real enemies of people. They destroy happiness and create untold misery. Creating all sorts of narratives that dont actually accord to reality. Ones own mind is filled with trickery and deception destroying ones own happiness and causing suffering to oneself and others. Stop this narrative. Pure Buddhadharma is not out of reach.

If so please can you explain why you think I'm exaggerating? I've received legal threats, cyber bullying via character assassinating me as mentally unstable to discredit me. As have many other testimony writers. No one forces people to join, its a myth that this is a characteristic of a cult. One of the issues is that the NKT misuses traditional teachings. For instance, the notion of "guru devotion" is traditional (cross traditions) and is not a problem per se but it can very easily be misused. It can even be unintentionally and unknowingly misused. Just as we cannot tell a skeptic by what he believes, but by the justifications for his beliefs, it is easier to understand cults in light of their usages rather than merely their beliefs. Also, equanimity does not mean that you should have no friends, "enemies" and strangers. On the contrary, it's proper to consider reprehensible what is reprehensible. But to see x as reprehensible is one thing, to have aversion is another. The point is to exert one's judgment while being free from attachment, anger and indifference. It's very difficult to not have aversion for what we find reprehensible and it's the whole point here.

_"For instance, the notion of "guru devotion" is traditional (cross traditions) and is not a problem per se..."_ - I wonder if guru devotion actually IS a problem, regardless of the culture or tradition it's very often found in. I would imagine that highly useful practices can just as effectively be imparted from a teacher to a student WITHOUT any "devotion" being required as a necessary prerequisite. I've been on the path for decades now, and if I come across a teacher who requires "devotion" from me (rather than a healthy amount of respect/decency/a sincere attitude/gratitude) then I'd run a mile. Devotion is SO easily used to manipulate, and doesn't appear to be AT ALL necessary in order to transmit wisdom.

Buddhist Beast I hope to start a RU-vid channel soon where I expose that organization (Dhamakaya) as a cult, by doing responses to their propaganda videos and stuff. Going back to what I said earlier I feel that the western version of Buddhism is more philosophical which is what I meant when I said that Buddhism as a philosophy, is fine as it mostly just focuses on the philosophical aspect and not the religious practice. In asian cultures where Buddhism is practiced as a religion, at its best its superstitious pseudoscientific wo, at its worst it’s a fundamentalist cult like Dhamakaya and all the nasties of the Abrahamic religions but with a different branding. This is why I’m an anti theist.
@leethrch

Buddhist Beast I say most are more polytheistic. I personally don’t care what anyone believes, I care more about what they do with that believe. If you decide to be Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, etc fine as long as you don’t violate anyone’s rights I’ll leave you alone. However, I feel Dhamakaya is a cult and most Thai people are forbidden from speaking out against them as they are a Buddhist organization and to speak ill of Buddhism is considered a sin, and most westerners don’t know about them and are therefore easy prey. Also, they like to mask themselves as a meditation center.

Its not a big step on from that to just say if I can just learn to think positively all the time then I'll never have a negative thought, but if you're in an abusive situation, then you need to have a negative thought about an abusive person to keep you safe. There's a lot of toxic positivity, and spiritual bypassing of thoughts and feelings the actually keep you safe. And also the dissociation involved. In order to not feel emotional pain, or to experience thoughts that we could call negative, you would have to be seriously dissociated. And to be non-reactive is the sort of goal of people's practice. So they would call it equaniminity, which basically means responding in the same to all the same phenomenona. This is just dissociation. To dissociate from a warzone so that you remain calm. This actually overtime means that you're becoming more sociopathic. Because you don't respond to bad things happening to people. You become more of a bystander to abuse. Mental health professionals don't know this. If you become non-responsive, you appear calmer. You are more compliant"

The notion that abuse one has suffered is something they made up or projected onto their reality is similar to the philosophy peddled by Landmark Education also, except they call it “your RACKET”! I found that totally invalidating. Yes, people do sometimes have “rackets” or “stories” about their reality that hold them back. But for some “guru” who just met you to tell you that something abusive you’ve experienced is just “your racket” (and they say that about anything you bring up as a barrier to your progress) is tantamount to emotional abuse, in my opinion. And yes, I think that Landmark is pretty culty too.

I’ve studied Buddhism since 1993. No legitimate Buddhist temple/meditation center forbids any references to HH the 14th Dalai Lama yet ceaselessly perpetuates superstition, i.e., the so called worship of a Tibetan *deity* called Dorje Shugden. Kelsang Gyatso’s chapter on emptiness in Modern Buddhism is unparalleled in its explanation of the most important aspect of Buddhism. However, having been around the various Texas locations I can definitely say that NKT has all the features of a cult and it’s all about getting that money. Charging upwards of $50 for a single class, claiming to allow access to the class for those who can’t pay wasn’t true when I personally saw people turned away from their *teachings* sad but true. Yes, the NKT is highly controversial, and I would stay clear of the organization. There are many attendees at the centers who don't realize what the organization is "under the surface." They gained a lot of insights and a better life from following basic Buddhist teachings. Also, Kelsang Gyatso's teachings on emptiness are indeed unparalleled (best out there). Nothing wrong with his general Buddhist teachings. I do think Tibetan Buddhism has a tendency towards cult-like status because of guru worship. You can find a lot of unwholesome things in all organized religions. I wouldn't say that all religious organizations are cults, but all have the tendency. Peace.

This sounds like the Hare Krishna cult. The guru devotion thing. I remember that I was associating with Krishna devotees who were in a "Modern Yoga Ashram" who marketed their ideology as a self meditation new age hippie group. But I realised they were practicing dissimulation of their true intentions, engaging in deception, controlling the flow of information and scheming about how to engage new participants. I had read Prabhupad's books but also read other books, and I started seeing other Hare Krishna members, people from Gaudiya Math and people from Sri Vaishnavism tradition. And they lost their shit, even when I said i was going to the temple, instead of their ashram. I read Bhagavad Gita As It Is, and other texts from Prabhupad, but I realised a lot of his teachings and phraseologies were homophobic, racist, sexist, casteist, sectarian, literalist, and conspiratorial. In the New Age Krishna Ashram, I was getting love bombed as well. When I started telling the members I wasn't going to their events, they would guilt trip me, and they would harass me into coming as if it was for my spiritual progress. I left all their whatsapp groups, and it was really bad. The end result of their ideology was to surrender to the guru and to get initiated, but they would never discuss this in their initial meetings with new participants. When I brought this issue of dissimulation up and withholding of information, and lying by omission, the brahmachari monk's response was "Well they're not ready.". I then told him that people can find information online if they want. And he discouraged the use of the internet previously, and then smugly smirked at me and said "everyone uses the internet". It was really weird. As if I had uncovered his secret. He then said to me "We're not pure devotees". At the end, as if I had uncovered another deep hidden secret. I think the fact that they were presenting themselves as perfect group was pretty disgusting, but I realised that this behaviour of covering up sexual abuses which has happened in ISKCON also occurs in organisations such as the Catholic Church. Sannyasis like Radhanath Swami, and Devamrita Swami cover up sexual abuse in ISKCON by Kirtananda Swami, and Pope Francis covers up sexual abuses by priests in Argentina. It used to bother me, this whole cover up culture. And I tried to explain to the Brahmachari, and said "when I go to a Mosque, Muslims will tell me straight up 'we don't drink alcohol, we don't eat pork, we believe Muhammad is the final prophet of Allah, we are expected to pray five times a day', when I asked Gaudiya Math devotees and they don't have the answer they say 'I don't know', if you don't know something just say that you don't know! Stop faking, stop pretending." He literally had no response. All he could say was that "We're not perfect" and he gave me a devious smirk. I stopped answering all their phone calls, and I stopped contacting all of them. Thank God I already knew the Krishna's were a cult before I met these Yoga Lounge people because I had watched documentaries on the murders, and the abuse. But I was definitely very disappointed that an idealistic movement that practiced spiritual devotion to God with ascetic undertones of Yoga philosophy, with emotional ecstasy had turned into this urbanised new age hippie religion. Something counter-cultural had marketed itself as a mindfulness yoga group. It was very watered down and nonsense, covering up an extremist literalist ideology.

I would say for people interested in Buddhism that this is an accessable tradition, everything in your native language. Unlike the Tibetan dominant traditions. But they do try to tell you that you have to study the same 12 books for the rest of your life. If you want to read other translations of famous scriptures your shamed for it, accused of "mixing teachings, creating your own path". For most intelligent people they don't offer enough to merit blocking out all your other interests. You will feel your personal evolution stagnate in this tradition.

Some good points raised here, but it's mostly irresponsible journalism. Poorly researched. Entirely anecdotal, but misleadingly suggesting that there might be tons of people with similar stories who are just too scared to come forward. I believe this to be inaccurate. I was one of very few children at Nagarjuna centre and there was definitely no child sexual abuse or anything of the sort. Certainly, the teachings have their problems and have left a powerful imprint on me. Yes, the NKT teachings CAN BE used to justify abuse, as can teachings of pretty much any religion or philosophy. There's SO MUCH to be critical of in this interview, and in groups like the NKT, and other examples of institutionalised doctrine. But I just wanted to make absolutely clear that the child abuse accusations are completely unfounded, at least in my own experience. Hearing an accusation like this was not only deeply troubling, but also prevents meaningful discussion around the actual psychological effects of growing up in an organisation like this. There's literally nothing on the internet about it that I can find, but like I said, there weren't many kids.

Glad someone speaks out against Buddhism. I noticed by listening to Buddhist teachings online that plenty of their ideas are great to victim blame and manipulate. Especially the idea of karma and the idea that the reason you feel something is not because of the environment, but because of your thoughts and emotions, can be used in toxic ways. This is why I practice mindfulness, but I don't do anything with Buddhism. Most of what I have seen felt dogmatic and manipulative. (I watched many different Buddhist teachings from different places. Almost all of them have these two core teachings. Some don't believe in karma.)

People misuse Karma to victim blame because they don't understand Karma. Karma is neutral. You have to study it to understand. Every religion has there faults and have fanatics or extremists or so call false prophets. The Dalai lama is not who you think he is but there are many true practitioners.

I went to the website and to look at what it was all about but in order to rent or even buy an apartment you have to attend a certain number of meditations per week. WHAT? You are saying that they teach that sexual abuse is part of Buddhism? You have to suffer more. Where did you go? I feel like it is a total misinterpretation of the whole philosophy...The teachers are abuse enabling? You must have gone to a bad place...I never encounter one Kadampa that would agree with this..or told my anything weird like that...I feel like you are talking about a totally different thing...I feel you misinterpreted many of the teachings. The idea behind of being calm or not let things affect you is to be able to act from a point of empowerments, love and compassion and not fear and pain. You are supposed to act to help others. That is part of the Boddhisattva vows. Being kind and helping others. Like in a airplane, you put your mask first and then help others...if you start freaking out and suffer for others then you and the others will perish. but you learn to remain calm and then help so you can be of service.

It's a very one sided interview where he takes everything she says on face value. When accused of things like this there's really no recourse to defend yourself because people say, 'well they would say that'. She's misinterpreted everything she heard but that's clearly not something she's open to hearing. I've been impressed by the Kadampas on here who have responded reasonably without getting upset at her attacking something they personally know to be profoundly beneficial and people they know first hand to be good.

I gave serious effort to fit in with this cult before finding myself asked to leave the centre, days before Christmas, with nowhere to go. I was then billed for an occupied room even though I wasn’t living there but my belongings were. Too much emphasis on being happy and anything remotely negative was seen as a path to lower realms. I witnessed Gyatso tell a packed temple at Summer festival that the self cherishing mind is an evil spirit. These people are sick and the organisation should be shut down for the protection of vulnerable people.

Sunk cost theory and aversion to admitting mistakes majorly kept me stuck in disastrous relationships (to religion, other beliefs, people, places, and habits). It was an incredible revelation to discover that just because you've spent a lot of time doing something doesn't mean you have to keep at it if that choice no longer serves you. People assume humans are resistant to change and we are, but I think far more so we are loathe to reconcile with ourselves that our previous path was a waste and was never going to deliver the promises/hopes we had invested in with that way.
