CULTIC - My Favorite Boomer Shooter This Year 

Looks like "Blood" from the 90's. Even starts in a grave and you fight cultists. Half expected the main character to say "I live... again"

I'm surprised to see a reference to just how truly crazy the cults of the 60's were. Most of the crazy cults in the news had their start in the 60s and 70s. It was truly a crazy time.

I love the slide mechanic. Can you imagine if that had been in the original Doom? Man. The secrets and destructible environmental elements are nice, too. This game seems really well made.

"I think it was the... Sweds who used teh Sten gun" Surprisingly managed to reference one of the few neutral countries. Like going out of the way to give an incorrect answer in class. To his credit, the weapon was used heavily during operations in neighboring Norway.

Sten was used by the British commonwealth and a silenced version by brit commandos.

Kind of reminds me of the game 'Blood' by Monolith released in 1997 (Up to date version on Steam called 'Blood - Fresh supply' if you are interested) , unfortunately even though Blood is years older it still does many things better, I think it has a lot to do with the dark humour, the levels are a lot more polished, the pace is faster and all the weapons just feel so much more refined... It even has the little details that you mentioned of shell casings dropping and bullet holes in walls. This game definitely has potential, they are already on the right track with heads exploding into a mess of gibs and the fire and people on fire animation is very nice. The weapons are interesting but need a bit more oomph behind them, like when you chuck an axe at someone, I want to see them stagger backward, an axe is heavy man and a shotgun at close range also has significant force, I want to see more of that.

GoldenEye 007 came out a year before Turok 2 and had very handy hit detection. Made it fun to try hitting the different body parts to see how the enemies reacted, got stunted by the hits.

I've played the Realms Deep demo, and now saw you and Civvie mention it. Definetly it's among the boomer shooters I'm hyping the most, along with Prodeus.

Every time you mention rise of the triad the hunt begins, I think about 2 things. The body explosions and the wounded guys that drop to their knees and beg for mercy that either stay that way or get up and try to kill you. Great game

Your enthusiasm for the old fps ways really comes through here! 👍 Cultic really is an incredible retro boomer shooter in the making, with all the bloody good retro shooter charm, but also adding a quick dodge, a killer slide, and a flying jump kick! The combat reminds me of a 1970s UltraKill, only with a meaty man, not a robo man, and exchanging the mega butt stomp for a high flying kick! There’s a really cool Survival Lvl in the demo too, where you last as long as you can, racking up Cash to buy more Guns in between Waves of baddies. Cool! I cleared the Cultic demo myself a bit ago on very hard, even recorded it with commentary, just marveling at the retro feel and excellent lvl layout, as there are often many ways to proceed through the lvl, and this makes it feel more interesting and fresh for multiple runs. This dev knows their stuff! Cultic is just so Bloody good! As is proper, as a major influence on Cultic was the epic FPS BLOOD! Cultic is such a great game in the making. Thanks for covering it. I look forward to playing it on release!

I like how this isnt in a dungeon.Its been getting a bit samey with the doom clones but this setting looks fun.

This game reminds me of the first “cabal” which I played when I was very young and traumatized my sleep the first couple nights. The gore sprites in the game for some reason really affected me

Splat - It's funny you mention "90's edgy shooters" (paraphrasing) because 3D Realms is also the company responsible for the first PC game I ever played, Duke Nukem. Looks like they still know how to make 'em like they did when I was a kid.

One of the first thing i usually see about this game is that "wow, this is really inspired by BLOOD". But i actually asked the dev about it and he told me that BLOOD itself wasn't really a major inspiration. Rather games such as RE4 and Dark Forces 2. But stylishly it does feels like Blood, the gameplay isn't related to the legendary game. So this game might be more of the likes of "BLOOD, but Caleb is a regular dude"

The demo was amazing. Played it a while back. Can't wait for the full release.

Looks great. It's on my wishlist. Love me some solid retro FPS action! Very Blood-esque, which is a good thing. I had Castle Wolfenstein and Return to Wolfenstein for my Commodore 64, so I go even further back! XD

Gripe 1: weapon sprites are way too low res - they fel even lower res than those of Doom/Heretic/Duke. Makes for some unpleasantly stark contrast with higher detailed environment. Gripe 2: the enemy sprites rotate to the camera instead of viewplane (like in most sprite-based FPS) - that makes them look much more like flat cardboard cutouts.

When you have ejectors in your shotgun you will always unload both of the rounds. So you loose both rounds even if not both of them were fired. It will add to the realism if you can take the usable one from the ground and use it again. But it is a 3d realms game.... Just leave it as it is.

It's a spiritual successor to Blood, surprised you didn't catch that 🙃

The swedes did not use the Sten gun they had the swedish K or Kulsprutpistol meaning bulletsprayingpistol.

I follow the dev on Twitter and was interested by the game even though the graphics pushed me back, but seeing it in motion on fullscreen, it actually looks really dope :)

Took less than 5 minutes for me to fall in love with this game. Reminds me of Blood!

Broski the smugglers boat extract on the customs map in EFT has that camp fire. I have died to that like three times fully looted out. I went prone and slid down the hill into the fire. You cannot get up fast enough before you burn to death.

I've always found it odd that people always forget about every other generation. Everyone know the "Greatest Generation" as they were the ones who fought WW2 but everyone forgets the "Silent Generation" who fought the Korean war and made up a lot of the civil rights movement. The Boomer Shooter that grabbed me is Turbo Overkill. I normally don’t play many First Person Shooters (let alone Boomer Shooters) but goddamn it that one’s special. Prodeus as well.
