Join us as popular guest & historian John Collins returns to talk about John Alexander Dowie. (1847-1907) A controversial “faith healer” who migrated to the United States from Australia in the late 1800s.
Dowie was referred to by critics of his time as a “confidence man”, a person who appealed to the confidence of victims using deception to convince or persuade them out of money or into submission.
In part 1, we look into how Dowie initially tried to create his own cult of personality in parts of Australia and California before entering the Windy City of Chicago and becoming the unstoppable force convincing thousands of converts to migrate into Chicago and eventually to his communal in Zion City, Illinois.

"The cult is controlling the history." That rang so true in my ears. The church Dowie founded still praises his teachings even today. My parents raised me in that church and yeah... I'm an atheist now trying to unpack all my chdhood trauma. You guys should interview my family and see just how far down the Dowie rabbit hole they've gone. It's pretty sad.

Using Trump as an example is counter-productive. At least half of your listeners are thinking "How did he lie more than any other politician?", instead of listening to your message.

I went to Christ for the Nations in Dallas Texas, started by Gordon Lindsay who had ties to both William Branham and Dowie… he grew up in Zion City as well. I have left the Pentecostal circles I grew up in… now I’m reformed and believe in cessation … it’s crazy to think I almost was in a cult. Now that I think about it, it makes sense because I felt things were very ‘off’!

My grandmother grew up in Zion, IL. I heard some interesting stories growing up, but never really made the cult connection.

It’s great when discernment channels team up to do videos like these. People need to know who Dowie was. He was the template for charlatan ministers.

My dad grew up in Zion, Illinois (1920's era), which Dowie founded as a sort of Christian utopia designed to usher in the return of Christ.

Bethel = house of God in old testament, so popular name. Eg Jehovah witnesses call their HQs Bethel. Lots of individual chapels in small places as well as the big name grouos

Man this really reminds me of the movie There Will Be Blood. With the different characters of the false preacher Eli and whatnot.

This sounds to me like a bundle mediocre. Proper research looks at events objectively. Thus presentation appears to me to be an attempt to give credibility to a preconceived bias on faith healers. Did everybody in the healing home died? is it the researchers ONLY who saw the deaths ? i mean thousand of people went there , you mean NONE of them saw it? how do people see other dying daily and still kept going by your own submission? by minimizing the aspects that some may have been healed , to me suggests that whatever researches conducted was inherently based on wanting to discredit the works of the faith healers . Lack of objectivity renders this work bias . AM not able to make an intelogible honest conclusion based on these discussion

That's what this channel seems to be about... discrediting those who preached a God who not only saves the soul, but the body as well (healing). I listen to Wigglesworth, Lake, Branham(recently) sermons... Word of Faith ministers I suppose.. Im not a member of the Word of Faith congregation, but I have faith in the Word. God was able then and is able now. He rewards those who have faith.

The group "Lord´s Recovery" teaches it's dangerous to read the Word of God directly. They say you should only understand the Bible through the interpretations of a teacher and they exclusively follow and endorse only one teacher: Witness Lee. They say he was the unique minister for this age, that only he had the complete, correct and up to date interpretation of the Bible, and that you cannot really understand the Bible outside of his teachings.

I basically grew up in Zion. My dad’s family has deep roots in Zion. He has some copies of the Leaves of Healing newsletter. I heard some crazy stories.
