'' emo '' has never been anything Punk to those who grew up with Punk *LMAO* really cute how you are all rewriting cultures that you had nothing to do with in the first place
My buddy and I actually run an emo rescue for emos who would have been slaughtered under the intensive emo-farming system. Like most farmed emos (and the majority of wild-caught emos) they must be kept away from sunlight, but seeing them wiggling around in that cute way that they do in the amphetamine barn to Sisters of Mercy on repeat makes me do a little face leak.
@@SeaUrchinFilms I'm imagining that famous Henry Ford line to describe what they're wearing: "You can have them in any colour so long as it's black..."
What I find hilarious is that I almost never see emos out during the daytime but if I'm out at night I'll run in to at least 2, it's like they fused with the goths or something
They have actually! I went to a metal/punk show and there was like 1 punk, 5 metalheads, 6 goths, and 30 or so emos for some reason. It's all just kind of a blob now and emo is sort of like an overarching title that a lot of them get put into because they're kind of everything at once.
I love the whole style and presentation of your Cultural Observation videos dude, it's like your accidentally watching something from early RU-vid days mixed with todays quality. Keep it up 👍💯,
Haha scene kids are indeed rare these days. I can see you had trouble finding any guys with fringes left. Still a few females kicking about here and there. Got to admit I used to be a scene kid, but about 4 years ago I just grew my hair out and became a metalhead that mostly dons trackies. You definitely missed a good Funeral for a Friend reference. They were my favourites along with Silverstein, Aiden, Senses Fail and A Static Lullaby (all early stuff, of course *does hipster pose*).
Haha cool. Yes, I was a FFAF fan, went to lots of gigs in the 00s, good times. I was already in my 20s then so couldn't really adopt the full emo style - just the fringe hair style, without dye. I do miss the music and scenes of the 00s. It was the last time, it seems, they really existed, together with a strong rock music scene.
Senses fail and FFAF were very good indeed. My favourite emo bands were Underoath, Escape the Fate but especially Brand New, who don't have anything to do with the scene style, so I guess they guided me out of emo into being more of an alternative doomer. But you never forget your roots. *sips monster *
@@HomerS95 Nice dude. I saw Brand New at Give it a Name festival in London 2007, was a great festival. One band I forgot to mention were Alesana, found them on Demonoid (a torrent site which seemed to dig metal and post-hardcore mostly) just after they released On Frail Wings in 2006, that is still an absolutely amazing album IMO.
@@leod-sigefast Did you catch the Last Chance to Dance tour where they played Casually Dressed and Hours in full? Had a standing ticket for Casually Dressed, it was fantastic.
As a 39 year old OG emo, I gotta say, it's strange to see this trend is holding strong. But, kinda heartening at the same time? I dunno, I like listening to vtuber anime girls sing these days. Life is fucking weird.
were still kicking. musically, a lot of the emo scene shifted towards modern trap metal/trap core stuff. if youre curious, i recommend you check out zillakami, killstation or kxllswxtch :)
@@z_t636 I'd also say a lot went onto metalcore and then prog metalcore (August Burns Red/Killswitch Engage > After the Burial/Periphery) as well. That's what I did around 2006/7 and then 2008/9 but still rocked the fringe for many years after.
@@JayFFAFAlesanaES Agreed. Emo fractured, it never went away. I'd say there's still the heart of emo in bands like Dwellings, Eidola, Hail The Sun, Dance Gavin Dance to some extent.
@@Cobalt985 I haven't heard Dwellings, will check them out. The other 3, yeah, DGD were around when the trend was still big. Swancore bands are all heavily post-hardcore influenced. Did you ever check out Eidola's old stuff? Veeeeeery different! Saw them and DGD in London in January, was a fantastic show.
When I was a young boy, my father... would've gone ape if I'd come home dressed like that! Now, older and (not) wiser, I wish I had. Instead I spent my time worrying what others would think of me but now I don't care about that. Actually bought a Black Parade t-shirt recently.
Same. I'm 18 now and I'm like damn. I never rebelled and I was so worried about fitting in I didn't do anything interesting. Now it's too late to be a real punk or emo or goth and there's nothing I can do I guess.
I can confirm that I ditched the long side fringe because I started getting headaches because it was extremely hard to see through. When I look back at the style I swore by as a late teen, I die inside, and then I remember dying my hair black every few weeks to cover my ginger roots, and then I die again inside.
As a current emo from Germany, i've got to add that yes, it's a small scene nowadays, but A LOT of it has shifted towards trap metal/trapcore/emo trap, artists like ghostofblu, suicideboys, grim salvo, gorejit and bvdlvd are pretty popular here, along with the more mainstream stuff like ghostemane and suicideboys This video was very entertaining btw, also really love the newer ones on punk and metalheads, as all of those scenes kind of almost blend where i live. i consider myself a bit of everything and your videos where very relatable
i don't think my emo phase was that big, maybe only a year and i just listened to the music i still dressed the same lol and i still listen to that music but not that often, mcr still has a special place on my playlists
as an 18 year old emo thank you for the documentary we are a dying breed you forgot one thing though emos will typically rock a fall out boy tattoo which they will want lazered off at 30
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
You are objectively too old to have been an emo. You were a new romantic at the appropriate age, then sought a second youth, amidst a bunch of people way too young for you to be hanging out with.
@@iii___iii Because emo was an adolescent fashion fad and musical aesthetic that was popular about 5 years, when you were about 20. At the time I was a metal head, and liked some of the emo music, but by god the angst, the glorification of depression. It was very much intrinsically adolescent.
Modern Tom Green Confirmed - They say at the end of the rainbow you either find God or an Angry Irish Man - Much to the county I have found comedic gold!
I think there should be a cultural re-enrichment scheme which offers Belfast goths a travel and Monster stipend to come loiter outside the Central Bank.
I just gotta wonder if he intentionally used the phrase "give up the ghost of Blink 182" to refer to the hardcore band Give Up the Ghost (a.k.a. American Nightmare). Because Fall Out Boy plagiarized their lyrics and quietly settled it out of court.
Nice and true video, thanks! 😄 But I think the logical subcultural evolution is: Emos -> Goths - Black Metal. Harder music and even more nihilistic and somber.
The closure of the central bank was devastating for the emo population, that was their main habitat. You should have come to the punk picnic on Saturday, Frankie
how he got away with this behavior in the states is beyond me. i'm every bit as confrontational on a daily basis and constantly recovering from serious gunshot wounds. namaste.
An emo in denial hits hard for me. I would never admit to being emo at the peak of my emo phase. I still kinda look the part I guess but only in the cold seasons. Way too hot in summer to wear black.
