Guys, I've missed you so much! 🥺💛 Thank you for bearing with my hecticness this semester! Get ready for much more regular content, a whole lot of love and casual magic. There's so much I want to share about my time here in South Korea! How are you all? 🦋
@김요한이야기 I understand what you went through and how hard it was because I am an Asian too but you can't just stereotype a whole race (I guess) just because you faced harsh treatment from some of them. Not everyone are like them. This is the same way as non-asians stereotyping Asians as racists.
@@What-pk6rt He just talked about the rampant racism against asians in europe/the uk and your counterargument is "I see lots of english men married to asian women, and I married one myself"? "It's just your personal experience"? Yeah good one. Really countered his argument. Also hilariously out of touch, especially with the upspike in hate crimes against asians during the corona crisis.
Honestly, big yes! And in terms of safety, it shows you what it *could* feel like to be a woman walking alone on the streets in the evening. I never fear being cat-called or harassed, which is such a rarity!! Thank you 🦋
@@UnJadedJade Oh wow. Here in South Africa, my parents don't allow me to walk around alone. It's not 100 % unsafe but also not 100 % safe either. Where are you studying next?
@@micaylabam2428 that’s such ashame :((( I feel like catcalling should be fined in every country, woman should feel safe enough to walk the streets alone
Korea sounds really nice, I love my personal space and the idea of never having to ask someone to move away slightly just seems perfect. Also really quiet transport? An excuse to take a break from talking? Sign me up! Love your videos btw, they're really helping me through my GCSEs. ☺️
@@dnrlek11 that doesn't sound as nice thanks for letting me know. I was considering Japan as well but was unsure as it's all so different to what I'm used to. I love learning about different cultures and it's nice to see both sides of something to get more of a rounded understanding of that place.
Personal space is a huge thing among strangers. But when it comes to friend relationship, it totally collapses. Just normal korean friends could be even mistaken as gay couple(especially girls).
I am from Germany and the first time I saw people leaving their pads, bags, notebook etc on the table that was the definition of culture shock😂 I was so astonished how you can trust strangers at this kind of level
I lived most of my life in Korea, but several years ago, I visited Germany without any company. I once left my phone in one of the toilets in a large train station. Luckily, a young man found that and returned it to me. There were several other occasions that I left my stuff but locals were kind enough to give it back to me even after several hours. Of course I might be just lucky, but I think we all are good and kind people, and want to believe that we Koreans are not that special. Someday we may be able to walk any corner of the Earth and still fully trust any stranger we meet.
@@arduous222 that sounds so nice. I hope that too. When I went to Japan, I lost my luggage the moment I arrived there 😭 my accommodation host helped me finding it but it surely isn’t the best start when going to a foreign country. I’m glad u had a good experience in Germany :)
@@arduous222 it will happen on Mars only :) I'm Vietnamese living in Canada for over 20 years. Burglars visited my apartment twice and my car once. I haven't found any car mechanic and dentist that I can trust.
SO TRUE! I live in Germany as well and one of the things you learn first in our city (Frankfurt) is, never trust strangers! I really love my city, but you really shouldn’t trust strangers here..😂 Nice to see there are parts of the world where it’s different. ☺️
@@Lina-sk It is important to know that Korean culture is different from the West and not multicultural. You have to admit that the culture here is different from yours. Almost all foreigners don't even keep this basic fact. I have only seen one foreigner who truly understands Korea in all my life. So I recommend foreigners not to come to Korea. This is unfortunate for both sides. The culture here is so different that you'll never accept it. And foreigners, don't say wrong prejudices about Korea. For example, suicide rates or plastic surgery are not true. Koreans don't like foreigners because of all these misunderstandings
@@Lina-sk To be honest, I'm sick of foreigners. I'm tired of the rudeness of foreigners. And you foreigners are always hostile and rude to Koreans. Don't learn Korean and don't come to Korea. That's comfortable for each other. Don't care about Korea at all and don't use us as gossip. I'm really tired
@@Lina-sk You foreigners never try to understand Korean culture nor accept that it is different. Why do we have to be like yours? Why is our way and culture wrong? Why should we abandon our ways and our culture? Is it so hard to understand that mono-ethnic countries like Korea and Japan can be different? Why do foreigners hide their shortcomings and only highlight Korea's shortcomings? It is not Koreans but foreigners who cause problems here. I have never heard the news that a foreigner was attacked in Korea, but I have heard the news that a Korean was attacked in a foreign country thousands more times. Korea is rather too generous to foreigners. Do you think we don't know that you foreigners always ignore, gossip, and antagonize Korea with wrong prejudice? Don't bother us, just get out of here
@@윤현준-l8p uhh honey you didn't understand my point and you go blabbering around for nothing. I live in Korea and I am engaged to a Korean so my understanding of the culture is quite extensive. Also I am studying the language and I have deep appreciation for most of the traditions and customs. With that being said I didn't condemned Korea for being different! It's only normal to be different. My point was that this girl makes it look like Korea is extremely safe and open to foreigners... but that's not the truth. I'm speaking from my personal experience. Also you are Korean so you already know how many problems this country has with crimes but you are too blinded by hatred for foreigners to accept that my point is valid.
The big focus on appearance obviously has good sides and bad sides, but one aspect I absolutely love about it is all the amazing Korean skincare! They really care about the ingredients and formula being good for the skin. A lot of k-beauty products don't really include denatured alcohol, sulfates, parabens, silicones and unnecessary fragrance like a lot of western brands do (not all of them of course). Most of my skincare products are Korean and it feels like a dream to use them!
@@paulina5772 The brands I've tried and will continue purchasing are I'm From, Cosrx, Sioris, Beauty of Joseon, Purito, Iunik and Isntree. I want to try The Plant Base as well but haven't yet. I also recommend La'dor which is a Korean haircare brand! The specific products I have from these brands will be too many to list but everyone's skin is different and have different needs, so it's important to read which skin type the products are targeting and analyze the ingredients, just for information sake!
It's just a cultural difference. No offense. On the contrary, keep in mind that Koreans can be uncomfortable due to foreigners. You have to understand cultural relativism
@@lauragoreni3020 It is. 3 things - Racism, Ageism and Lookism - are a dominant culture here and younger Korean population openly support it. If you call it out they'll of course deny it, half the time they really have no idea that their culture is radically discriminatory not just towards foreigners but towards their own people. Korean people generally do not see it as a bad thing.
Wow, that with the backpack and laptop is really crazy, that they just leave their stuff in a cafe for an hour... :O And the thing with the wifi is amazing :D Really interesting video
To say I’m jealous is an understatement 🥺 I got a place on a summer school to study at Seoul National University but due to Covid, it was cancelled. I was so heartbroken but hopefully I’ll be able to reapply next year! 🤞🏻Really glad you’re enjoying it! 💜
@@JJ-yu6og don't spread wrong info like fools. U need Google . CCTV could help catch a criminal but not prevent robbery. see what's happening in China even though they had enormous amount of CCTV
@@JJ-yu6og That's true but I'll say its more of a cultural thing. CCTVs don't forbid people from stealing, its rather like South Koreans are not familiar with the idea of robbing things. I mean the idea that you will actually rob other people's things in public itself is really weird to me, as a Korean myself.
Everything you said is why my wife and I love Korea SO MUCH! It's the people the culture and the cleanliness, lack of crime and graffiti. You think you're in another world. We have visited 7 times for holidays and we have no intention of stopping any time soon (bloody COVID!!) So lovely to hear you so positive. Love your vlog!! 🤗🇦🇺❤️🇰🇷
@@Lina-sk could probably agree (but I’m an old guy). I guess I was relating it to here in Australia where we seem to have crime even in the small town I live in. Keep safe! 😔
@@tonybush6156 if you don't speak Korean or have Korean friends it is hard to know about everything that goes on. But from my experience, my friends experience and my boyfriend...Korea is not the safest. It is indeed safer than other countries however their law is painfully favourable to sex offenders and criminals in general.
I spent last semester in Seoul and everything you said is so true. I absolutely enjoyed my time there and miss it a lot especially when seeing photos of my Korean friends or your videos. Make the most of it for the remainder of your time. Wish you all the best. 🥰
Coming to Seoul next year to teach English to elementary level children at a private school! Been learning Korean for two years in preparation and I can't wait! You're helping me look forward to it even more Jade thank you so much! 수고했어용! 🌺
@@Uhhbyeee I'm going to be teaching in a private school (학원) which thankfully don't require any form of teacher training, most of them only require that you have any type of degree, and that you are a native English speaker. In terms of applying, Adrienne Hill has an amazing video explaining everything about the process, I'll link it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Am1OWuH74g.html Hope this helps! :))
Your open mind will get you very far in life. I looove the way you manage to observe and appreciate another culture with respect and you're always willing to learn 😭❤️
cultures shocks can be so hard to go over. i have a vivid memory of going on holiday to lanzorate and wearing shorts and t-shirts meanwhile all of the locals were in cold weather clothes because it was the winter for them
I live in Bogotá, Colombia and this reminds me how usually foreigners that are traveling here are dressed like you said (shorts and t-shirts) while it's raining and cold 🤣
Just don't come to my country there will be huge cultural differences. You foreigners never try to understand culture here. They don't even accept that they are different
I once saw someone in Seoul put their credit card on the table to reserve, it and left their card there for some time. It stressed me out until the person came back. That was surprising to see.
Thank you for making this! I'm actually leaving to study abroad in Seoul next month. This video has made me feel way better about my trip and way more excited than before!!!
As a Korean born American living half of my life in Korea and other half in the States, this is really interesting and pretty accurate! Born and raised in Korea and moving to America has broaden my eyes very much. I can tell you with confidence that if I were kept living in Korea I would have been more conservative and introverted. One thing I didnt like about living in Korea was that there was no much of individual characteristics. People all wear what others wear and do whatever others do. But coming here in the States I learned more about myself, what I like and what I really want. As you said I would not say its either good or bad thing but I do think that its definitely good for you experience both and find the balance.
Can just imagine the smell all those cherry blossom would cause. Would really be Heavenly. And don't get me started on those Tulips. There's such an aesthetic to learning and experiencing other cultures.
Thanks Jade. My Thai wife and I want to visit Seoul next year once the virus goes away, if it ever does. You've helped me see the culture in a unique and interestingly new way. Way to go!!
As an individual I really appreciate different cultures and I love unique Korean culture. I really like the fact that people in Korea respect other's privacy and opinions. As an introvert I really enjoyed the positivity there. Loved your videos
Im Korean living in the west and thats sth i really miss as well, the sense of community, respect and companionship for others. In korea, kids as young as 6 go out by themselves to school or playground etc... cuz we don't teach the kids the idea of strangers danger, instead teach them to ask for help from any random adults if needed. Parents also have a faith in the society and others that if my child is in difficulties, people will voluntarily help them out. Thats a sense of trust shared in the society, dont get me wrong that there are many social issues in korea too and koreans are very critical of social problems and injustice.
@@ykuk1380 Do they really help? I'm not sure anymore but I heard someone that visited either Japan or South Korea and say how moral courage isn't really a thing there and people just look away and walk past people that are visibly in trouble or shouting for help.
I live in Abu Dhabi but when I moved to London for uni, my family kept telling me not to leave my belongings in cafés and leave. I'm so used to leaving my things and coming back later
Haha im korean and lived in abu dhabi for six years and thank goodness that UAE has similar cultures regarding unattended items in public. I left my stuff at the café unattended all the time whenever i went to the washroom or eat at a nearby restaurant.
i am an exchange student in seoul, staying here for one semester and i want to comment on the quiet culture. so far everywhere i'd been in seoul, there was the quiet and respectful culture in public places, cafes, buses, shops, metros... then i went on a one week bicycle journy to busan, and oh are they loud in the countryside. the quiet culture is much less present in the villages. i took online classes in cafes whilst on the road and the customers in the cafes were so loud i could barely hear my lectures. just an example that i think is very valuable to share.
The quiet on public transport sounds like absolute bliss! One of the things which annoys me faster than anything is when I'm trying to listen to music or just sit quietly and there always seems to be at least one person having a loud conversation either on the phone or in real life! I have amazing noise-cancelling headphones and even then it cuts through sometimes :/
One of my best memories was actually with my Chinese exchange students mum and she was doing a tea ceremony with me and she could speak practically no English. Language barrier conversions are such a blessing!
As a fellow British gal, I've really wanted to go to South Korea for AGES just to experience day-to-day life there. But the valuables thing, I still can't compute how you can just leave your whole digital life in a cafe and still come back to find it-😭✋🏾 (new sub 😏)
Just don't come to my country there will be huge cultural differences. You foreigners never try to understand culture here. They don't even accept that they are different
Wow, that's so interesting! I love the fact, that you go a little deeper in thinking about the country and culture, and notice more details from its history etc, so you can understand it more!
Thank you! I have vacation and I was lying in my bed watching RU-vid but you inspired me to come out of my bed and now I am going to have a date day with myself to treat myself because I haven't really felt great the last few days and I want to treat myself 💕 you are amazing ❤️
Love how you've had so many different life experiences and travelled around. it can really only be a benefit to anyone in terms of expanding their world view, seeing things from different perspectives and having greater understanding. it's enriching both ways. i am heartened by people like you!
I don't know how to describe it but how is it possible jade to deal with the situations which are sometimes worst may be , so easily and positively. I have been watching since you've problem in your subject chemistry but the way you deal your problems are so motivating . Thank you for all this😊😊.
It is so cool to hear from you about Korea as one of Korean subscribers! You could probably also make one visiting other site of Korea such as Busan in summer! Thanks for your video as always 💗
Just don't come to my country there will be huge cultural differences. You foreigners never try to understand culture here. They don't even accept that they are different
I love how positive you are about everything!❤️ One of my biggest problems is that I always concentrate on what I don't have and the negative things. This is ruining every new experience! But you are so fantastic, Jade! Whatever it is, you emphasize the advantage of it! Even the things that were different and better in Berlin or the UK, you still find advantages for both sides. Omg I loved this video!! I am a vegan and want to visit South Korea someday but was afraid because many people can't continue that lifestyle due to lack of options. It was so nice to see you having a good time despite the limited options and I would definitely love a part 2!!
I really enjoyed your video. In fact, for Koreans living in Seoul, transportation in Seoul was so natural that I didn't know it was an element that surprised foreigners. And I recommend you to go to Seongsu-dong before you leave Seoul! There are so many great cafes. I hope you enjoy the rest of your days in Seoul! 💖
I live in England and used to live in Korea, and the biggest misconception I've found amongst people in England about Korea, is they seem to think Korea is a hot country. When in reality, it's only hot during summer. No joke, when I told people in England that Korea has harsh winters far colder than England, 100% of the people I've told this to have reacted with surprise. It isn't uncommon to see temperatures below -10C in korea in winter. I've experienced days when it is -18C (0F) in Seoul, so it amuses me when people assume Korea is some year-round hot country like Thailand.
I've never really fancied going to South Korea or any country in Asia really because I have never even been out of England but after watching this video it has mover into the top ten on my bucket list!
I really enjoyed watching you video! I love watching videos where people talk about their own experiences after living in a new part of the world! It makes me appreciate and learn more about the world that we live in 😅
As a black person I am a little nervous visiting Korea from things I've heard from other black travellers but I love Korean food so much I'll be visiting anyways 😂
no worries, you will like it. racists are everywhere. but there are more racists in America for sure. so. you will be fine .^^ and racists are not welcomed at all places, they are losers.
look I'm gonna be real as a black girl to another blk girl. they are racist. everywhere is racist you just have to think if the country is worth the racism you'll experience. for example I'm not American but i wouldn't go live there because i think the country isn't worth the racism. I've been to China for 1 year abroad i loved it i felt awkward sometimes because they where starring but they never left me because i was blk i felt that the awkwardness was worth
@@S_T_fania They maybe ignorant and prejudicial based on lack of personal experience meeting a black person but racism is going a bit too far. They had no history of slavery nor apartheid. There are so many beautiful places u should visit in seoul : seongsu, hapjeong, hannam, itaewon, apgujung, ankook, gwanghwamoon and more The best part is that all of these places are connected through metro :) so convenient
This video was so useful! I'm moving to Shanghai (from Germany actually😂) for my last year of high school and I've never lived in an Asian country before. I've grown up as a third culture kid and although I've been exposed to a plethora of cultures I know this will be unlike anywhere I lived before! I'm super nervous but so excited to explore this new culture, thanks for giving me an insight into what it might be like (although Chinese and South Korean culture are still very different)!!
As a Korean i want to tell you that south Korean ,Chinese and Japanese culture is very similar because we are east Asian and we share the same culture if you don't know that.
I really do wish to travel to Korea but ngl I am scared of what kind of reaction I’ll get from people due to my appearance..I am on the thicker side (especially when comparing to Korean beauty standards) I have dark hair tanner skin..etc so I don’t know how accepting the people are gonna be so I really appreciate the fact that there’s white privilege and shedding light on the fact that not all people may be treated like that
I understand what you are worrying about the Korean’s beauty standard. But as a Korean living in Seoul, most of people doesn’t care about other people. So don’t be afraid 😂😂😂!!!
Beautiful video, absolutely made my day just to see it! I've never been to Seoul but it's a great wish of mine, especially when seeing people like yourself just glow up when talking about your experiences of living there.
this sounds so much like singapore! everytime i study in a cafe and need to go to the restroom in another building, i just leave my laptop and stuff on the table and it’s so safe!
this is why i love Korea 🥰. It's so respectful and I want to live somewhere where I don't get shouted at by random teenagers that make me scared to walk on the street.
Can relate so much!!! I remember i was sitting alone for dinner after exam. And the Ahjumma of the restaurant accompanied me to eat and gave me sweet potato and asked how's my exam. They are so kind~~~
Had been there for 3 weeks in Summer 22... I thought the city gave me the cold vibrant when I first arrived... but yes if u found the right friends/colleagues... they are very kind, warmth and genuine :) yes, they respect privacy and value appearance and I learn how to respect it :) I'm south east asian and wear hijab and so far experienced only good things there 😊
Ahh this makes me so happy!!! I've missed you Jade❤ Great video! I definitely want to visit South Korea one day, so a review by one of my favourite youtubers has definitely given me perspective on the culture there. Also, could you make a video on different Korean dishes you've tasted and what you think of each :)
This is the best culture shock video I've seen! You are so genuine and positive! I'll be going to Korea as a student in a few weeks so this is very helpful~

it’s so interesting to hear about all of these in a different point of view especially bc i grew up in korea but now go to college in the us !! i remember i was so confused when i had to pack ALL my stuff at a cafe just to go to the bathroom for a minute hahah loved hearing all your thoughts 💛
I'm really glad that you're enjoying here in Seoul, Korea :) 12:35 It reminded me of Everland when you mentioned Lotte World. It's not actually in Seoul, it's in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. (Samsung owns this.) It's also a theme park and it's HUGE. It also has a zoo which is my favorite!
