Welcome to the harsh realities of studying abroad in 6 countries. I'm going into my final year at Minerva University next year studying Cognitive Science and so far, I've studied abroad in San Francisco, Berlin, Seoul and London (although I'm from there hehe). Next year, I'm moving to Buenos Aires and Taipei! 💌 as i say, it's been the most incredible, life-changing experience and I'm so so so grateful this is my life.
But... it has its challenges. Here are a few of them 💐

I go to an untraditional university called Minerva! It has a built-in study abroad programme in 7 cities with the same students in your cohort. It's the most INCRED opportunity, but as I say, also very stressful. If you're interested, know what you're getting yourself in for ;) they do have amazing scholarship programmes and are open for all nationalities: www.minerva.edu/
thank you so so much for watching! it feels so crazy to be nearly at the end of my degree aaaaaaaah!!

I romanticise my life on here so much that it’s important to recognise how *tough* studying abroad can actually be! I hope you find this useful if you’re considering studying abroad!! 💛💛💛 also worth noting that I go to an untraditional uni so our experiences will be v different :)

i feel like it’s sometimes hard to talk about the hardships of living abroad, because people kinda expect us to be very grateful for it, and i understand it because we are experiencing things some people will never experience. and of course we are grateful for it but there are really hard parts in it. when i was 15, i went to study for 5 months in the United States, and i felt like it was so hard to share my hardships with people staying at home because i was supposed to live a wonderful experience, which wasn’t the case because of a lot of issues that happened during my living there. it was a precious moment but also hurtful experience for me but i didn’t wanted to « disappoint them » with saying that it wasn’t « that wonderful » if that makes sense.

Also keep in mind there are travel opportunities other than Minerva! I’m on an Erasmus Mundas masters program where year 1 is in Sweden and year 2 is in Finland. Still get the experience of living abroad but it’s smaller changes, longer to settle in, and it’s free (for EU students)!

I relate a lot to feeling like you leave a piece of yourself in all the different places you've lived, and to always yearning for another home. I lived in four different countries in the past 5 years and it's hard. But as much as it is painful, I try to see it as a beautiful privilege, getting to miss a home you've built on the other side of the world. It's even more beautiful getting to return to that home. I recently got to travel back to Ecuador where I lived for 7 months and had to leave abruptly due to the pandemic. After 2 years of being away, it really felt like I had come back home and that made me deeply happy.

even from a perspective of going to a UK uni i’ve really contemplated the concept of home! being between multiple places can make me feel quite displaced and as if i now don’t have one true home, but i like what you said about having a piece of you in different places & finding comfort in people :)

I love @11:00 when you say "music has been so essential to me because it can pull me back into the lives that I've had in each place." I TOTALLY RELATE. I think music has this magical way of linking places, people, and eras of life to certain songs. I had a playlist for every season every year starting in 2015. I've lived in Spain for 2 of those years, and certain songs will always always remind me of that time of my life... walking in the Metro to my next English class I had to teach, or laying in my apartment in the middle of Madrid late at night, going on runs by the river bopping to a tune in my headphones, sitting in my favorite coffeeshop in a specific neighborhood, etc. Certain songs also remind me fo the other countries/cities I've traveled to: Italy, the UK, Paris, Sweden, Belgium, riding on game drives in South Africa, and more places too, including Berlin!! I am a musician myself and have made a lot of success with it with my own RU-vid channel and playing live shows in different countries-- I hope that my own music serves as solace, joy, comfort, or just a simple memory-link, like it does for you

I think the important thing is not the changing itself but the knowledge that there will be a change and that different environments simply require different responses. I have the impression, that many of the (older) politicians around the world have not learned that lesson yet. So I am glad to see your generation experiences these things and learning from these experiences

If you feel like a local after just 4 months, that's very impressive to me. I've been living in Hamburg for 6 years now and I only just have started to feel like a local in those past 2 years or so. And even then, I was already born and raised in Germany. Couldn't imagine ever feeling like a local in a different culture after just a few months. Then again, I'm just a very introverted person and like being at home doing nothing a lot, so maybe that's a part of it.

I just got back from a year in Seoul this week so this video came at a good time...studying abroad is the best experience of my life thus far and returning is exciting for various reasons but there’s a lot of pain involved too. Creating a new life for yourself just to leave it behind without knowing if or when you will have it again is hard and I’ve had a lump in my throat since being at the airport in Incheon. Though I can now enjoy the familiarity of the UK again I wonder if it’s worth the sacrifice of everything unfamiliar over the past year that made life feel new. Thank you for sharing!

Watching you gain confidence in travelling over the last few years has given me a lot of hope and my own confidence as someone who at one point was too scared to leave the house. I feel like I've been on this (very parasocial) journey with you as I gained the bravery to go to a university outside my hometown and now I am doing a full YEAR abroad in England (coming from Canada)!!! It is so unreal to take a step towards dreams that I never thought were a possibility for me and I want to thank you for being one of my inspirations to do so!

Learning that you go to each place for four months too has really given me more hope for my semester abroad! That’s the length of my program and I thought it seemed slightly short and that maybe I wouldn’t get a lot out of it in that time, but just from the impression I get from your vlogs you seem to have a great time. I never did the maths on how long you stayed in each location before. It was really nice to have a breakdown of what kind of stages I might go through as well! ✨🦋

Maybe you can leave some time in the end to just stay there and enjoy the city after your course ended. I just did that in my erasmus and it was the absolut best decision! Most people rushed home right after their last exam in June, but I stayed another 6 weeks and just enjoyed the slower life and got to experience some things from my bucket list and in general become more calm before going home feeling more ready :)

You really helped me to revise hard and in my mocks i always got 8s or 9s which was mental, now I've finished my gcses and waiting for results day. But thanks for also shaping my personality. I was always the sort of quiet reserved guy, and your genuine personality and passion for learning showed me that I should be myself, and I did that, and over the months I started talking to more people and made great friends. This is really good to talk about and promote. There is way way way too much romanticising online, especially TikTok. This is slightly different but I’m backpacking and working and it’s really really hard. Moving countries/cultures, work, hostels and new people every few days, fitting in sight seeing and planning, no routine, decision fatigue. It is so so challenging. It’s still great, it’s just challenging and people never talk about it. They talk about backpacking and being a digital nomad is the best thing you’ll ever do etc but they never set the realistic expectation that it’s so freaking hard. This is the best video you’ve made showing the reality of this type of lifestyle. Thank you

I only moved to different cities during uni but I relate so much to the home friends part! I think it's normal when you go to uni because you're all moving towards different paths and having different experiences and different views on the world but it's still sad to look back and reminiscing on what the friendships you had or if you are able to keep some, it's inevitable for those dynamics to shift and change. Much love Jade, growing up and our 20s are weird times 💛

I think expanding your comfort zone is just so important! Because of COVID I wasn’t really used to be in new places and I can’t exactly say why, but it just scared me a bit and I was very easily overwhelmed. In the last few weeks after my A-Levels I visited some family and had to go to a new city on my own. And wow, I‘m already feeling more confident and less scared and I decided to do an Solo Interrail Trip in August😊 Now I‘m stuck in my room with COVID which is really frustrating because I don’t want to „lose“ this confidence and trust again because I‘m forced to stay in my room for a bit (hopefully only a week) Thanks for this video Jade, I really enjoyed it ✨

I have been going back and fourth between the Netherlands and Italy. I attend a dutch University, however I am Italian. It's really tough honestly, I feels like I am always living a two separate lives and I cannot find a way to fully enjoy both because I am always thinking about the other one. I totally get the part about losing friends from back, even with those I keep in touch with, it sometimes feels like there is a world between us. Honestly every time I complain about something of living abroad I feel like I am being ungrateful. However, it can be very hard and sometimes a bit alienating. Thank you for this video, I have been following since your highschool days (aka also mine) I feel like I have kinda grown up with you :)

Thank you so much for sharing this video ❤ I am so happy you are sharing these, and I relate to several things you said, though maybe not in entirely the same way. I studied abroad one semester in France while I was in college, and then after graduation, spent one year teaching English in Italy, another year teaching English in France, I've been at home for two years working in an elementary school's ELL department, and am about to move to South Korea to teach English there. I absolutely understand having home in different places; it's been a learning curve to understand and value what I have in my current life and situation, when I can miss what I used to have elsewhere. Places, routines, events, people...yeah. Despite how excited I am to move back abroad, as there are parts of myself I discovered before that seem to have grown dormant since moving home (which is not entirely a bad thing, as I've discovered other parts of myself since being home, as well), I am a little scared about finding my new routine, as I've developed a few over the past two years that have given me a lot of comfort and peace. I love what you said about friends from home. I've managed to maintain a couple of strong friendships at home in Missouri, but over the years, especially in the two since I've been home and have reconnected with some close friends, I've noticed that where I used to connect closely before I lived abroad, now there are some gaps. There are some things that logically they might comprehend, but without having experienced it they might not truly understand. And that's been hard. Keeping in touch with other friends who have lived abroad has been crucial in helping curb loneliness during those times. But the way you used the word "mourn" really helps me put it in perspective. I think it's absolutely healthy to recognize the close friendships we've had that, in the course of life (especially in living abroad) have changed or grown distant, and I think allowing ourselves the proper time to mourn that, even if what we have gained in their stead is also beautiful, is crucial to our wellbeing and in recognizing the value of what we had and what we have. ❤

I had always really wanted to go for Erasmus, it has become such an important marker of adulthood in Europe. I wanted to experience it but I didn't really think it would change me all that much, I was already 22 and had lived alone. Boy was I wrong! Thank you so much for this Jade. Your videos, experiences, and perspective are so helpful to me trying to see around the corner. I'm starting university in the fall and hope to combine international development with anthropology. I've always wanted to be able to give something back to the world while also travelling and getting a chance appreciate it. But the one thing I've always worried about as someone who has lived rurally, never moved, grown up with the same people- what will it feel like to not be able to put down roots? My family and friendships are so important to me, but I know I'll have to make an effort to keep up with them. My friend group have been trying to avoid admitting that things will have to turn long distance sooner than we'd like. It'll be hard, but COVID gave us so many tools that will make it easier. We did a lot of video calls over the pandemic, and I don't think we plan on stopping any time soon. I've found that I've been both anticipating these changes with excitement and uncertainty. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad. You have no idea how helpful it is.

When I first went on exchange for a year in high school I thought the exchange organisations' big words and slogans for changing the world and supporting world peace through intercultural communication was way too idealistic and just good marketing image. But after my experience and continuing work in the community I 100% understand and agree with the point. Living abroad is such and amazing but also though experience because it changes your worldview and challenges your values, prejudices and everything you thought you knew. I love talking with people about exchange experiences cause no matter where you go everyone like yourself just has the same realization and appreciation for how cool it is that there are so many beautiful different cultures and amazing people in this world. I'm so fascinated by the world and will 100% want to live abroad again and challenge my worldview more. Loved this video and love you Jade ❤

Omg I can relate so much!!! 😬😮‍💨😅 this past year I have studied in 3 different countries. The culture shock wasn't as violent as you in Korea but my goodness it was stressful and i have insomnia now but I taught me how to adapt and it was worth it!

Being only 22, and living in many different countries in such a short span of time is HARD and confusing (especially when you are young), and kudos to you handling everything in a positive way all the time, while being true and authentic to yourself! If I were you, I'd probably spend lots of time wondering if I'm actually going where I want to be, and if the major I'm studying so much, sacrifing so much is worth it.

I live abroad and can relate to some of the struggles, it is hard! Though I can't understand feeling local after 4 or even 8 months - that's a slow-travel tourist 😅
@carinateske6261
@carinateske6261 2 года назад
I think the main reason why I feel that way is that while there are loads of other valid struggles with it, you don't get a local experience because you're never a resident. You don't have to worry about how any taxation or political issues affect you long term. You can ignore most of the actual struggles that come with living in this place and because they aren't going to affect your life longterm. Being able to ignore those parts of local life and being able to tick of fun events and attractions when you're not doing uni work makes you a slow travelling tourist - not a local.

Hi! My student life also got moving around quite a bit and I totally agree with what you said in the video. So relatable! But I wanted to touch upon the last part - not being scared of traveling anymore because, since you've done it before, you know you can do it. I agree with that, I also have that experience. However, lately, I have been so mentally tired of moving around (in terms of packing, traveling arrangements, leaving people behind, etc.) that I just don't feel like going anywhere. I was wondering if you ever had that reaction or maybe you don't need stability as much as I do.

Or maybe at least put two cities of the same continent into one year. To me it sounds super overwhelming to be in Buenos aires or berlin first and then in taipeh in a blink of an eye

I can relate with some of your experiences. I study in Athens but I'm very lucky to have participated in the Erasmus+ program. And of course I loved it. The first time I went to study in Krakow, Poland for a semester. I experienced culture shocks as I found people there to be more cold than Greeks and not very talkative (but I wish I'd met more locals!). Also, I arrived in Krakow 2 weeks before covid hit so I got through the first quarantine without my family which was quite hard. Thank god my girlfriend was also an Erasmus student so we were together the whole time. I met people from many countries and found similarities in our cultures and/or languages. It was a life-changing experience for me. That's why I wanted to do it again so this time I'm in Madrid, Spain for an 6 month internship. This time is of course better as we don't have to quarantine 😅 The people here are very friendly, which makes me feel more like home like you said, and the thing I love most about Madrid is that it's so multicultural. Many people from other Spanish-speaking countries live here but also from Europe or Asia. It is amazing to learn about the world through your friends! And of course the worst part is the moment you have to leave all of your friends 😢 I highly recommend taking part in Erasmus+ if this is a possibility for you. 😊

I miss traveling and starting these processes again, finding new hotspots, getting lost in the streets, tasting new cuisines, etc. I wish I could have a study opportunity to experiment (a city like taipei) with a completely different lifestyle. I also feel good in London even if it's not my home country and I know once there I'll want to travel again. It's a tricky compromise but hopefully, we'll find balance in between all this.

I know how it is to have several places to call home. sometimes I catch my line wondering about how tue perfect "home" would look like by taking the best off all places. Which is of course not possible but my line entertains that thought a lot. It also ,ade me more aware if what I Value most in life.
