We are replacing our Detroit Diesel V12-71s with Cummins 6.7s. Check out how we prepare for this #enginerepower. Now you may ask WHY - so we can get more range and make it to Japan!! The Cummins will be diesel sippers compared to the Detroits which were diesel guzzlers. #cummins #boatlife

If you have any questions or comments about what we are doing - make them. Blaine tries to answer every one of them over coffee in the morning. It's kinda his thing and I personally think he enjoys it! So please keep him happy and make a comment.

The original buzzen dozen, love them. Why so many people don’t like them I don’t know. They are great engines.

I have said in past videos that they are great engines. They are just a poor choice for the type of cruising we will be doing, and had zero service records. Rather than spending a bunch of money toward rebuilding unsuitable engines we put that money toward engines that will work much better for our purposes.

You got my interest here, guess after having managed a fleet of 20 aluminum crew boat in the 50 to 70 range this brings memories. Did got from V71 to Cats, are you gonna keep those TD514?
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa Месяц назад
We went from V71's to Cummins. Small Cummins at that. The boat really doesn't need anything big. We cruise at 9 knots and have a hull speed of 13 knots. Power requirements are pretty minimal. Even the small Cummins will operate at an inconsequential duty cycle but will do so with a monstrously better fuel consumption than the 71's. Thanks for watching!

With the new engines can you run biodiesel
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
They are supposed to be compatible with Biodiesel however I am not sure there will be many places to get it where we are going. I am going to have to look further into it. Thanks for watching!

I've pulled apart a few engine rooms, it's pretty satisfying once things start moving. 'When in doubt, tear it out!' I too have an unreasonable affection for the 1271- question- with that long shaft and big wheel will there be an unreasonable load on the gear when shifting without a shaft brake? Im sure you've calculated this. Also do you find the boats directional stability is poor with that enormous extension behind the rudders? like does she hunt? Best luck...
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching! It was mind boggling how much old abandoned wiring and plumbing was in there. The engine room will look pretty sparse compared to how it was before. I did contemplate keeping the Detroits originally but the more I thought about it the less feasible they were for our application and they needed a ton of work. I did think about the gear loading. That was one of the reasons I chose the transmissions I did. They are a fair bit oversized compared to what would normally be used with these engines. I think the high powered QSB's use a ZF 280. These are ZF 325's. They are also electronic transmissions with the ZF 'Supershift" which significantly reduces the harshness of the gear engagement. I am not anticipating any issues. Tangaroa handles fairly well even with the props and rudders so far forward. I find steering with the engines very precise at low speeds. The only time we get a bit of hunt is when we are approaching hull speed. The extension definitely causes a bit of nose down attitude as the speed increases. Not horrendous but noticeable. Take care!

So a fresh air intake down the stack and an air exhaust up the stack beside it?
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
It was originally set up with fresh air in through the hull sides and exhaust and hot air next to the exhaust through the stack. The new setup will pull fresh air down through the stack and the hot air will exhaust out the side. The engine exhaust will go out the bottom with a small above water bypass for idle and low speed.

Hey have u used or ever used propspeed and do u know of it n used it on yr boat also do u have or know about flir night vision
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
We are using propspeed this time around. Have heard good things about it.We don't have a Flir onboard sadly. They are pretty prohibitively expensive, at least for the genuine Flir stuff.

I'm curious, is the underwater exhaust a similar setup to what Fleming uses? I definitely wish I had dry exhaust, dealing with riser problems today, so much fun.
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
I am not super familiar with the Fleming builds but I do believe they use the same style underwater exhaust, at least the newer ones. It was a very hard decision for me to have any exhaust with water injection due to the failure possibilities of them. Unfortunately my desire for better engine room ventilation overcame my distaste for water injection elbows. I have designed the exhaust in such a way though that the water injection point is very close to the hull exit so that the riser could completely fail internally with no risk of water getting back to the engine. Its one of the benefits of having a full stand up engine room with lots of room to go high above waterline with the exhaust. It is basically a dry exhaust with a very short wet section. Take care!
@Adam-en4zm
@Adam-en4zm 2 месяца назад
@@OnboardTangaroa I'm sure I'll see this in a video soon, but are you essentially planning to use the dry mufflers above the engine, then route the exhaust down to the water injection elbows, and likely do a side exhaust exit above the waterline? It's a long boat, so I imagine a thru-transom exhaust is out of the question. Are you going stainless steel for the elbows? It is a large engine room, how bad was the ventilation before? Especially being aluminum, I figured it wouldn't get too crazy hot in there as the water should keep the hull quite cool.
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
Yep, we are reusing the dry mufflers and the exhaust will be dry all the way to the hull exit where the injection elbows will be but the exhaust will exit below the waterline. To ease the backpressure while idling and at low speeds there will be a small exhaust bypass that will y off the main exhaust and exit above the waterline. As you assumed the transom is not an option for the exhaust as the engine room is way forward on the boat and the pipes would have to run through two cabins on each side to reach the transom. I am using SCH10 304 stainless for the exhaust. The exhaust was horrible before. There were two fans that were very poorly thought out and were obviously scabbed onto the vents in an attempt to move air out of the engine room through the side vents. the stack was completely filled with exhaust and had little to no flow. Underway at less than full load the engines would pull a vacuum on the entire boat. It was so bad that it would suck in salt spray through every crack it could find. The engine room never gets too hot up here in the PNW but I think the engines were definitely starving for air and I feel we certainly would have had heat issues once we get to warmer waters.
@Adam-en4zm
@Adam-en4zm 2 месяца назад
@@OnboardTangaroa Sounds like quite the impressive setup, are you fabricating the exhaust parts yourself? I suppose with your background in performance automobiles it's probably within the realm of your abilities. Crazy how you had enough air being sucked into the engines to lower the pressure in the boat. Having that big exhaust stack free as an air intake should definitely allow things to equalize more. Also a nice option since side vents could be an entry way for high seas on your crossing to Asia.
@OnboardTangaroa
@OnboardTangaroa 2 месяца назад
I will be doing the exhaust myself. The pipe is a little heavier gauge than I typically deal with but still much thinner than the metal I used on the windlass. The more difficult thing will be insulating the pipes. I have minimal experience with installing exhaust insulation and no experience in making it. Been doing a lot of reading though and have some ideas. We used to open the aft door while underway to ease the vacuum. The little draft heater at the back would get very grumpy underway. Having the air exit the sides especially with the high pressure fans should keep any water ingress at bay for sure. My new fans move a fair bit of air. Take care!
