curiosity teardown: power bar with USB

Most of the time the USB power supplies I see overestimate their ratings.
This one claims to do 4.2A at 5 volts. And it's a surge suppressed AC power strip as well.
Is it any good? Gotta tear it down to find out!

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.

That's one of the nicer outlet expansion devices I have seen in ages! Very cool.

Maybe having companies worry about lawyers is good sometimes, especially if the product can be traced back to a major retail company (-: Like the swivel could be handy behind the bench. Have a good day and don't shovel to much snow.

Thanks for sharing. So difficult to find USB power that actually provides specified nameplate current. I've got a bunch of USB bricks from Ali that don't come close, of course. Only good for powering esp32 projects.

The voltage on the big load is probably lower due to the wires having too much resistance I liked that the transformer had insulated wires coming out, better insulation between low and high voltage sides
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 6 месяцев назад
The voltage measuring issue seems to be more due to resistance in the output connector of the smaller USB meter. I've been testing a few scenarios and that's where my tests have been pointing so far.

@@pileofstuffJust wondering if the folks at BangGood offer such testers. Seems like their jam.

"Commercial Electric" sells branded stuff on Amazon, yet doesn't sell strip plugs of any kind on Amazon. I know diddly about electricity, but I can tell when someone is impressed or dismissive because they know what to look for. My assumption would be that a corded strip plug would have many of the same components on the inside.
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 5 месяцев назад
Possibly, but often these things are just bought from whatever factory and re-branded. Different products under the same brand could come from completely different factories and with different components.

Not going to go down the "UK plugs are better route" but to be sure I wish we could get similar mulit way sockets in the UK. 4 - 8 way are available but NONE can turn through 90deg and be hidden as well as this (and other) devices. I'm envious... 👍
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 6 месяцев назад
Then again, rotating the UK plugs 90 degrees wouldn't make them much more low profile.
@anotherledfreak8649
@anotherledfreak8649 6 месяцев назад
@@pileofstuff that's very true. I suppose in that sense they're already low profile as opposed to you north American types (and Canadian's obviously 🇨🇦)

The only remaining question: does the USB supply whine when unloaded? That's one reason I refuse to buy power strips with integrated USB supplies - they often whine when not loaded, and there's no way to turn them off without switching the whole strip off.

Does the "protected" indicator really show protection or is it just a power indicator? No beer introduction?
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 6 месяцев назад
The indicator shows if the fusible link in series with one of the MOVs has blown, which would typically happen after the MOV shunts a large overvolatage. If that happens, that MOV is no longer providing any protection.

Hang on. Is that monstrosity supported by 3 *power* pins? Throw it away!
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 6 месяцев назад
Yup Well, that and the plastic "ground" pin that goes into the other half of the outlet. It's a relatively common type of design.

@@altitude1039 120 V can kill and the currents in the US are higher which means more heat if there is a bad connection. I am skeptical of these kind of things that lay in between fixed installations and plug in devices.

Knowing your type of electrical outlet, this type of power bar is very scary for me (I'm European)
