My whole life I’ve gone to hair salons to get a haircut and they’ve always said “wow you have a lot of random kinks” or “your hair is super dry and damaged” but I would only straighten my hair probably 3 times (max) a year. My hair just kept getting really frizzy and I started researching. I’m now starting the CGM journey!! Wish me luck

Same, but the change in toweling and texture means that air drying takes FOREVER and that until your hair is dry you are actively doing your hair to make sure it stays in shape. What I thought would be the easiest rule is the hardest. Thinking of buying a diffuser.

I don't style my hair at all and I've never used more than two products (just cheap shampoo and cheap conditioner) at a time so this whole process seems kinda scary, but my hair is Hermione frizzy and I'm kinda sick of just wearing a ponytail. I might just start with a low poo, silicone free conditioner and not hairbrushing - that doesn't seem like too much of a change and hopefully the small change will motivate me to get started with a gel 😅 The documenting it tip is great!
@jaymebaily8765
@jaymebaily8765 5 лет назад
You can use vo5 conditioner as a co-wash, then a little "as i am" brand leave in conditioner, herbal essences or Pantene mousse, and Aussie instant freeze gel to get a cast. Let it air dry then scrunch out the crunch. I believe you can find all of those products at Wal-Mart and they are all very affordable. You'll figure out what you like and don't like as you go and switch to other approved products over time.

@kimandmae101
@kimandmae101 5 лет назад
I'm roughly a month in on my journey and it's been.. testing. No one in my family has my hair (2c) and so I grew up straightening my hair all my life. I finally made the decision to just put a halt to my straightener use as I remember coming out of the shower one day and noticing that I had waves. I experiemented a little- and low and behold I had much more wavier/curlier hair than I had thought! This past week has been one of the most testing as I've been testing out products and different methods and my hair just didn't/doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Thank you for the big patience reminder. I feel like I got so caught up in watching all these beautiful curly hair videos, thinking my hair will never get to where they're at when I've only just begun my journey. Thank you for sharing your tips/tricks and what you've learned, it's helped me embrace my hair!

I’m almost 46, and my hair has been straight and healthy all of my life. A few months ago I experienced I disturbing amount of fallout and my hair texture changed. I noticed an insane amount of frizz where there was none before. No matter what I did the frizz didn’t go away. About a week ago I had a consultation with a stylist and she made me aware that I now have naturally wavy hair. Since finding that out I have been scouring RU-vid to figure out how to care for it. I came across your channel and it has changed everything. You have a similar curl pattern to me and your videos are fun and informative. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 😘

I actually did something very similar to curly girl method a few years ago (I even made my own gel from flax/linen) but I kind of stopped... This video made me want to start again. THANK YOU!!!! Of all the millons of CGM videos on YT yours is honestly the very best! I wish I would have seen this 8 months ago when I first started. It would have saved me a lot of money, time and self loathing drama. Comparison and giving myself grace was my biggest problem. I was so discouraged so many times by comparing my hair to others. I was stubborn and didn't quit and I'm very happy with my results so far. Not to say I don't have a bad hair day every now and then but they are few and far between. My hair is so much happier and healthier now. The beginning is hard, VERY HARD and I feel like that isn't stressed enough. Also, I love that you dont promote that everyone immediately run out and buy the most expensive products on the market. Everyones hair is different and expensive isn't always better. Personally I find the cheaper products work best for me. Of course I found this only after wasting so much money on the expensive stuff. If I could give a gift to all the newbies it would be this video because it contains the absolute best advice anywhere. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this video! I started CG about 2 weeks ago (though I've been sulfate and silicone free for years). Because I'd already been sulfate and silicone free, I figured I wouldn't have much of a transition and my hair would "bloom" (to borrow your phrase). Alas, not so much. I have very fine, low-density hair and I've been torturing it by round brushing it straight and THEN using a curling wand to add waves. Started using the wand about 7 months ago. During that time, I noticed so much more breakage (even a new hair "layers" where my ponytails were breaking hair--up high and down low). So, my transition isn't going badly because of the products....it's all the freaking damage! Crazy! I have a LOT of repairing to do. Thank you for sharing your before pics. It really is too easy to watch the video and discount what you say by thinking "yeah, but...her hair has always looked like that--it's just healthier" or whatever nonsense we tell ourselves. So, I'm sticking with it. Trying to use as few products as possible so I can learn my hair (you are right--easy to buy a ton of products and blame them). Side note: you have beautiful skin! So even and smooth--radiant.

Courtney, I recently commented on one of your recent videos that, when I started, I went crazy and bought so-so-soooooooo many products. I've found a handful that work best for me, and this video has inspired me to simplify even further. I washed a few minutes ago and I'm allowing my hair to air dry...I did not apply any of the other "extra" things I sometimes add to my routine (pre-poo oiling, deep conditioner, leave-in, masks, curl activator creams, serums, souffles/smoothies/custards...) and so this wash consisted of a gentle shampoo, a wash-out conditioner, and gel. Also, instead of finger coiling, I ran my Denman brush through 3-inch sections of my hair and I have to say, it's looking quite promising. (BTW--I'm having great results with the brush. I got a 9-row Denman and was using it as such, but then out of curiosity, removed every other row as I had seen others do...and found that I prefer the look it gives me after it's been modified because it creates elongated, wider "ribbons" out of each section, and I like that barrel-look on my very fine, shoulder-length, mostly 2b hair. With all the bristles in, it gives me a lot of thinner, whirly curls that are pretty, too, but that I'd probably like more if I had longer hair...I'll keep experimenting with it as my hair grows.) Thank you for keeping it real!

As a teenager I had hair that was out of control with frizz - we were told as little girls that you should brush your hair multiple times a day. Now as a 25 year old my hair has become dry and frizzy and it looks terrible - despite it all it still tries its best at making 2B curls. I've watched so many videos on the CG method now and felt super discouraged because everyone says something different, so thank you for this video! I think I have the courage to start now!

Great video Courtney, you make everything so clear. It's important to give yourself a break when you start something new. I tried the CGM a year ago but did not understand my hair at all and instead of better it only got worse. Now I know what my hair needs. But my hair was so long and tangly and dry from using the wrong products and care, so the other day, when it was boiling out, I chopped it all off. Biggest Big chop ever, Buzz Cut lol. #oops Brand-new start for me with proper care. Thanks for making it clear not to overcomplicate things.

This is so helpful! I’ve been doing research in the curly girl method because my hair use to curl but I’ve damaged it soo much between dying and hot tools that my hair only curls when wet 🤭 then becomes this massive frizz ball that I’d just brush and straighten 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

@brookeb2227
@brookeb2227 4 года назад
I’m just now starting the whole curly hair thing (I used to do it). I ALWAYS ALWAYS braid my hair if I’m going to be swimming. I always do a French braid, if you don’t know how to do it I really suggest you learn, once you figure it out it’s super quick. I also prefer to do French pigtails. I just feel like it keeps my hair from getting all gross and tangly, and then afterwards I also feel like my hair doesn’t look super nasty. :) I also personally have very dry hair, it’s long, it’s been bleached, colored, heat damaged, etc. so I’ll also take it as an opportunity to put just a gross amount of argon oil on my hair before I braid it.

How do you know which products to start with? Ones that are more for protein or for moisturizing? What if you don't know what your hair needs more of? I was thinking that maybe my hair is in protein over load? I have no clue where to start. I have type 2a wavey hair though. It's not curly, but wavy. I feel so overwhelmed

OOOO YES I LOVE IT ALL!! GIRL lemme tell you- i sat and watched ur entire channel & came to the conclusion that we would be best friends 🤣 your videos are SO informing & i absolutely love that you take the time to explain everything & every individual step in depth so there is almost no room for not understanding what to do & what not to do. You seem so comfortable in front of the camera & that just gives off the perfect vibes for wanting to start this method & be so excited to do it, you somehow convinced me right away that i will 100% be able to start, stick to it & change my hair for the good with this method even with the “not so fun” parts of the process. it’s like “okay yeah let’s do this & meet my true hair identity after years and years of not caring properly & just doin the easy way outs & not even giving it a second thought about the really detailed things i was truly doing to my hair, which needless to say- have been horrible 🤐 I have 2a extremely wavy and thick hair. I have always hated it because like you said - i’d brush it & immediately turn into a lion with a very poofy & almost straw like textured mane 🤣 I have always shopped for my shampoo/conditioner as which ever smelled the best and that was all.... & constantly buying different ones each time. I’m so excited to really dive into the specific ingredients & brands that are curly girl method approved & challenge myself to make it through & FINALLY have the hair i’m meant to have without all the heat, ripping tangles out & actually be able to wear it down naturally without looking insane. 😂 i have a couple questions on my progress- is there a way to contact you? or is it only thru these messages?? i’m not sure if u see/ are able to keep up with all the loving comments or not!! Reply if you see!! ❣️

I really resisted getting a silk pillow case. I would drape a thrift store silky skirt over my pillow. Finally found some dark teal silk pillow cases 2/22.00 at BBB. I still think that if I find a large silk dress at the thrift store I'm going to sew a silk scarf for nighttime wear.

I started CGM a few weeks ago and am STRUGGLING! Anyone else have bangs they’re trying to grow out? They are NOT wanting to cooperate. And my hair also can’t decide which direction it likes to part. I’m just glad I’m starting this when no one will see the struggle my hair is right now. Hoping my hair calms down before I am forced into the world again!

I couldn’t understand why my hair was really curly when I was little and my mom helped me take take of it, and growing up my hair just became ‘strangely straight but with the bottom with a little curl’. Little did I remember... my mother had very curly hair, unfortunately she passed away when I was little so she couldn’t teach me her secrets for curly hair. Now at 20 years old I decided to look into this method that I was hearing about on the internet... Fortunately I already stopped using heat for more than 5 years and the hairdressers always compliment me because I go get a trim every 1 or 2 years but I don’t have split ends at all. I also have all cotton towels in my house and I don’t use silicone, sulphates and alcohol in my products.. so I think I am at a good point. I hope that I could grow beautiful curly hair just like my mom had... wish me luck! Thank you so much for those informations on curly hair and on the curly hair method! 💕

It’s really interesting, I’ve been watching your videos preparing to start the curly girl method and I’ve been doing a lot of things intuitively (I’ve used frizz dismiss shampoo/conditioner for years and I’ve not been able to find a “do not use” ingredient in it as of yet, use bamboo pillow case, only brush my hair when wet, don’t use a terricloth towel only a microfiber turban and only while I dry myself off before putting in detangler) - I need to watch your favorite products video next because my biggest issue is how to get my curls defined evenly - it always seems like random chunks of my hair likes to be frizzy or just not curly in general. I’m also pretty sure I have 2C curls. Thanks again for your encouragement on the last comment I left! God bless!

Yep - as a curly girl myself, I discovered years ago that the best shampoo is clarifying shampoo (and I recommend it to everybody, not just curly girls)! All of these fancy schmancy shampoos that have all the extra crap in them are just adding crap to your hair and weighing it down. The clarifying shampoo washes all of your product away, leaving you with actual clean hair. And yes - the $1 bottle of Suave clarifying shampoo has helped keep my curls gorgeous for years. ( I'm usually on a budget, but I do also like the Neutrogena clarifying.) I just recently happened upon a few videos like this, so I'm not familiar with this "curly girl method" until yesterday. But apparently my secret is out!

Courtney I love you’re stuff girl ♥️. Question- during transition - is it cool if I only style it like every four washes or so? Right now it takes agesssss to dry. I diffuse and it’s just nuts how long it takes. It’s an all day affair. Hoping once it’s healthier it may dry a little quicker 🤞🏼. Also - how long did it take you to exit “angry broom” territory 😂. (BTW that was my favourite comparison ever and I use it constantly now 😆).

Those of us who don’t have access to lo-poo: apple cider vinegar diluted with water 1 part vinegar, 5 parts water works just as well and makes your hair look so shiny ;) if you don’t like the smell: essential oils are your best friend as well as a spruce of perfume afterwards

I am just starting to learn to wear my hair wavy. I have unknowingly been following a lot of CG guidelines for YEARS. I gave up sulfates 6 yes ago, gave up silicones 3 yes ago, been sleeping on a silk pillowcase for 3 yrs, only use heat once in a blue moon. Been just focusing low poo shampoo on my roots for a year, using hair masks, etc. The one thing I didnt give up was my colored blonde hair which I don't really want to give up. Now I am mostly struggling with learning to apply products and style correctly without frizz.

I know the hardest part for me is the no brushing. I’ve tried it and my hair looks like I’m homeless. I can’t finger comb all the tangles out even though I braid my hair at night and, worse, it still breaks up my curls so it looks frizzy. It makes me feel hopeless that I’ll never have good day after washing hair, let alone, several days after.

My hair has always had a few curls while the rest is generally wavy and frizzy. Some of my hair isn’t frizzy so it was always really annoying having bits of frizz only in certain places so I would just straighten my hair pretty much everyday as by the end of the day it would frizz again. I tried the curly girl method for the first time today and I can’t believe how curly my natural hair is and how unfrizzy it is! And it has sooo much volume!

About half of the time since quarantine started, I have been air drying my hair and wearing it in non-damaging spin pins and scrunches. I think that I may actually be able to do this easier than I thought! I just have to learn how to diffuse...
