Curly was a lifelong dog lover. Everywhere he traveled, he'd find stray dogs, which he would foster until he could find them a home. When he toured with the Stooges, he would do this in every single town they stopped in. It's believed that Jerome 'Curly' Howard rescued over 5,000 dogs in his tragically brief lifetime.

Yes, unfortunately spaying or neutering wasn't practiced in those days, back then, society viewed drowning and shooting as acceptable ways to dispose of unwanted animals. What Curly did was commendable, but one has to wonder, how many of those 5,000 dogs had given birth to even more unwanted dogs?

Curly was actually very introverted and private off screen. There is an interview with Moe many years after Curly passed where he said that Curly would only come out of his shell around his family, their children or if he'd been drinking and otherwise avoided the public eye.
@urbanurchin5930

He had good reasons to avoid the general public. Often, people on the street - strangers - would try to do the routines they had seen the Stooges do on screen. Curly Howard had a stroke on short 97 “half wits holiday” that’s why last scene of that short is just moe and Larry throwing pies. Moe and Larry finished the scene as curly was rushed to the hospital and then joined curly after completing the short just the two of them. Curly did make a cameo in short 100 “hold that lion” as a train passenger and does his signature bark and they say he is part cocker spaniel. He also had a cut scene in the 117th short malice in the palace as a cook, but the scene was cut. Larry was suppose to go into kitchen and “curly chef” quit and Larry have to finish meal.

There is some controversy about Curly's hair. Corroborated by several family members. Moe's son and daughter, as well as other family members, were emphatic that Curly himself came up with the idea of cutting his hair. As the story goes, after the subject of haircuts came up, Curly told everyone to wait while he ran out, got his head shaved and returned. Healy made a comment of him looking "girly," which everyone mistook as "curly" and the name stuck. Later on, Curly didn't like to constantly have to cut his hair for the reasons stated in the video, but it was apparently his own doing and, apparently was not as big a deal as people make it out to be. Over the years, the story got twisted and made it look as though curly was somewhat forced into it. But not true. He came up at the idea himself. In addition, according to relatives, whiel he likely didn't care for the haircut long term, he was not as upset about the haircut as later history makes it sound. Also, according to Mo's son, Curly had no trouble finding women, as he was a notorious womanizer, albeit single most of his adulthood. The problem was that his taste in women caused him to get taken advantage of a lot. Like a lot of things, the stories seem to grow over time.

Of course Curly was the heart, and soul of the Three Stooges, and the truthful fact was that he probably never knew he was going to become a pure legend of comedy. He's what made the Three Stooges, and it showed how funny the rest of the gang was going to be along side of him. Everything revolved around Curly, who never, ever stopped making us laugh. I truly miss this really great man, who also had a very kind, and wonderful soul. He was what defined comedy, and to this day, this man, timelessly makes us laugh so hysterically. Thank you Curly for creating laughter in this "crazy" world of ours. You are so missed.

Curly Howard, John Belushi Chris Farley were these heavy set guys who were without gravity on their feet. There was almost a 7th stooge. After Larry Fine passed away, actor *Emil Stika* was signed up to play "Harry," along with Moe, and Curly Joe. Before they could start filming a single short, though, Moe also died. The three surviving ones (including Joe Besser) then decided not to continue the act without *at least one* of the Howard Brothers still living.

There is an episode where Curly has his full hair and is sleeping on a train. Shemp, Moe, and Larry are looking for a thief named Mr. Slip. The trio remove Curly's hat and shows his full hair. Curly was a distinguished ball room dancer and Larry was a renowned violinist and pianist. He actually plays these instruments in many episodes and not faking it. Moe is my favorite Stooge being the bully. Everyone likes Curly the most which is understandable. Shemp was funny too and underrated and deserves his do.

Today (January 18, 2024) marks the 72nd anniversary of the World's Greatest Stooge. A very sad day in Stooge history. Unfortunately we'll never know how long he would have lived had he not let his shaved head bother him, and pulled a Ted Healy (heavy drinking), plus unhealthy eating. RIP Curly.
