Are you able to get SS Benefits from an Ex Spouse that you were married to for 21 years if you have remarried another man and are still currently married to that other man? Because the Exs SS Benefits are much higher.
Sadly, once you start doing this for free, you get people that are ungrateful for the service you're providing. I am sorry to hear that. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf.
Dr Weir! I am a survival spouse, my SS is 100 dollars more than him , so it is unfair I can not get his SS benefits at all , he passed away 18 months ago. I am 70 now. We were married for 29 years. My question is were hos money went ? Both of us worked for more than 35 years in this country?
All I have to say is this: if you ask the right question, you get the right answer! Some of these questions 😂... Damn! you have to be some kind of genius to untangle. Dr Ed, keep doing what you are doing, you are the best!
What a kind gesture. THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS. Please ignore the cruel remarks, if you get them. It just reveals them, and was never about you.
Thanks Dr. Ed. I was married for 9 and 1/2 years to an abusive man. I couldn’t take it anymore and now I don’t qualify for benefits. Please ladies don’t let this happen to you 😢 it hurts
You should only count on yourself and your work and your loved ones. Don't regret your past, as you don't want to relieve the abuse for 6 months longer just for Social Security Benefits!
Just what I was needing to hear Dr Ed. Filed myself in 2014 at 62 after divorce but my ex hadn’t filed yet and I was told by SS that I couldn’t file on him. Have appt on Friday and will find out if I get anything. Made the appt because of you. Keeping fingers crossed that I get even a little extra. Thanks for encouraging me to check it out!
You can apply for social security benefits for your four children from your divorced ex-husbands social security account if he is paying or not paying child support. It happened to me. I divorced my ex- and had four children with no extra income coming in and he didn't pay child support, and we lived in separate states too which made collecting child support difficult because different states have different child support laws. He was in arrears of 14,000 dollars. I found out that I could apply for his social security benefits for my kids as long as they are under the age of 18. Once each one of them ages to 18, the benefits stop because at 18 a child is considered an adult. I don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot, for your kids. So call social security and find out if you are eligible. Good luck!
Lynn: The original law required a 20 year marriage. Women definitely do need to acquire financial knowledge. As an adult, it is your responsibility to learn important adult information. When you divorced, you may well have had rights to a portion of his company pension plan, too, but if you did not claim them, you may have lost money then, too. In order to stop missing financial gain, you might want to put a news app on your smartphone and scan the business headlines and personal finance headlines daily. Each month there can be 1 to 4 articles there worth reading. It is your responsibility to read throughout your life. Otherwise, expect to miss other important information. Who do you imagine is responsible to take care of your needs? When you turned 18, you acquired that responsibility. Until you turned 18 your parents had to provide a shirt list of necessities specified by State law. When you married, your State law probably required your husband to provide a shirt list of necessities to you, and you were probably required by law to do his housekeeping. That is common. Nobody is assigned responsibility to be your adult financial advisor. You either hire a financial advisor, attend public programs, or read for yourself. Hired financial advisors might gain commissions and have a financial interest in what advice they give. This is exactly why more and more women are getting business degrees. Many women want to learn how to manage money. If people are limited to expecting to spend all the money they receive, they might not be able to afford both a home and s car in retirement. If you remarried before something like 60, you would not have gotten ex-spouse benefits anyway.
I got divorce 22 years ago and my benefit it's $1,000. But I'm very sick I got cancer I don't know my rights. I appreciate any information to help me out. Thank you so much.

Thank you Dr. Weir, for your all your help you give everyone.👏 I have learned so much from you. It's so essential to know what's going on at SSA, even if you are not yet at that age to collect. You give people a louder voice to go back and collect what they are entitled to.
I didn’t received my deceased spouse pension . When he’s alive he received 700& and lm receiving 800$ . He went home before pandemic and pandemic came he wasn’t able to come back . He got sick the more he has to stay . And died last year. I was supporting him and spent all the burial . Once he died I reported to SSS. They said I wont received his salary
How often do social security “rules” change? Every 4 years, with new Presidential administrators? I’m 6+ years from early retirement but enjoy learning what you have to share. Thank you!!
Because I was receiving under $300 Social Security’s and plan A and B cost about $100. I couldn’t afford plan B. I have been penalized for many years. Today’s assistance requires one to have plan A and B. Please stop this penalty so I can go to the food bank etc. I am a 80 yr old widow could use this help.
Please go to your State DHS/HHS Office and sign up for Medicaid and SNAP benefits. Call the SSA and apply for SSI aged. These 2 places hopefully will help you.
If you are making only $300 you can have the rest of medical expense paid by the medical if you live in California In the matter fact the medical kicked in when you are making less than $1580 That if you live in CA
Eljs: You ought to qualify for Medicaid and SNA unless your State does not participate much in those l. Medicaid benefits are more extensive than Medicare except the healthcare providers receive less. Most food banks don't tie their services to Social Security. Your community ought to have a federally funded senior nutrition lunch program free to you on weekdays. These are held at Senior Centers, community centers, recreation centers, and religious building social halls. Talk to your local librarian at least by phone about programs like MEALS ON WHEELS that deliver lunches and dinners free to the elderly. People who live in cities average a 15% higher standard of living partly because of private charity and local, state, and federal programs. If you live in a rural area without such assistance, that is your choice. You vote kinder or more cruel uses of State funds. Your State government either ops in or ops out of federal programs. Amtrak told me there are States where families buy one way tickets to an out of State destination and put a dementia relative on the train. Then there is nobody at the destination, but the neighboring State puts them in nursing homes. You need to take the best care of yourself possible.

Friend is disabled signed by two physicians. He is about 54 years old. His wife suddenly passed. She was sole support. Social security refused him SSDI twice. He applied for his spousal benefits and was declined due to the fact he was turned down twice by SSI. How does someone get assistance when they can’t afford a lawyer.

When I am 62 I plan on checking my ex spouse’s benefit. If his benefit is greater than mine ….can I collect on that but still continue to work until I am 65??
@@barbka4009 yes, as long as you stay under the earnings limit for that year. For 2024, it's $22,320.00. We will find out in October what the amount for 2025 will be.

My husband was on disability and I filed on My own record and got $1000 a month I don’t know when he switched from disability to reg SS but he gets way more than I do . Why ? I’ve had this rechecked but still don’t trust it’s right. What can I do now?
i’m a widow since April 2 , 2020 and married for 40 yrs, my husband work for 25 years and i work for 25 years too, as he pass away i never got any benefits from his social security is that right ?
My husband passed in March 2020 after being married for 49 years. Because I stopped working to care for him, I was not eligible for spouse benefits, only the highest of our two checks.
Zada: Huh? Your ability to collect your deceased spouse's check amount IS a spousal benefit. While he was alive, your choice was to receive HALF the amount he received on his record or all of your own benefits. You could have collected half on his record and waited to collect on yours at a later time, for example. I had a classmate whose wife predeceased him. He collected on her account until his full retirement age and worked consulting until he had maximized his own record. Then he switched to his own account. Social Security can help you calculate how to maximize your income from among benefits you are entitled to. I was told that my ex-spouse benefits would be automatic once I activated our accounts being linked. The widow benefit is the amount of his check instead of the amount of your check. I was told by Social Security that what actually happens is that they continue paying the widow from her account AND add to that from the husband's account to raise her monthly income to match what he had been receiving. They ask for his Social Security number.
If my husband of 35 years gets social security and they take out WEP. Since I do not get his pension, if he dies, would I get his whole social security survivors benefit without the WEP attached, since I don't collect any of his pension. Mine is not very big.
What happens if you were with your partner for 10 years, but were not married but were common law, but he owed the IRS..will the surviving spouse have to pay his IRS debt since he passed away

@@Caroldarr when he dies they will use his full retirement benefit amount and calculate the same % reduction you got filing at 62 - but it won’t be 1/4. I think the reduction is 30% for filing 5 years early (assuming your full retirement age is 67).
I was told I can’t get any survival benefits now I am 62 and make around. 50,000 because I make to much. and if I retire at 65 I still can’t get any survival benefits. Anything I can do?
Wait until your FRA. If you still choose to work, the amount of money you make, won't matter at that point. Also, the other money will continue to grow by waiting to collect on it.
Hi Dr.Ed Weir. I’m a survival spouse, I turned 61 in August this year ,working part time. I didn’t know that I have to apply for benefits at 60. Did I lose my benefits for past year? Where should I go to apply for benefits? Thank you for an informative video.

I am receiving spousal benefits since we were married 35 years. I have not remarried. He did remarry. He died Sept 3. Will my benefits increase now or stay same. ?

@@krisbrown522 you need to talk to your attorney and have them hash it out. I messed up and signed some stupid paper that gave me $2000 less than I should have gotten. They won’t fix it.
@@MollyT-zk4chif you want to maximize the amount you receive, you would rather SSA calculate the higher earning 35 years. Salary at that younger age is usually insignificant compared to what is earned later in life.
Hello, I think you were doing great and I want to thank you for your services! My husband and I were married for 20 years. My husband passed away at the age of 46 before our children were out of high school. After my husband passed, my sister got colon cancer and had to have multiple surgeries unfortunately she is single and had no one to help so I helped out as soon as my sister was doing OK my father came down with colon cancer again since I was the only one with any money, I was the one that helped my dad. Throughout the years I have done many small cleaning jobs now I have arthritis in my neck and I have arthritis forming in my fingers. I am only 50 but is there a way that I could get survivor benefits from my husband.
Today I was told by ssa that drawing on my first husband ssa of 19 year marriage was not an option because I was married again before age 60. Does that sound right?
I'm currently drawing on my now deceased ex's SS. I was 60 when he passed, we were married 25 years. They did ask me if I had remarried, so apparently that is a thing. I didn't remarry, so I'm ok to collect.
Don’t take anyone’s word for it, they may have had a completely different situation or potentially misunderstood. Call social security and ask. ( We took someone’s word for it and left over $100,000 behind that we will never get back because we could have applied over 4 years earlier than we did. )
My ex-husband just turned 61 my age right now is 69. When should I apply for survivor benefit? I’ll be 70 when he just turns 62. There’s eight years difference between us this mess me all up and I even to get it thank you. I really appreciate when you get on and talk to us, you’re very informative

I am 70 years old. I receive spouse benefits. I'm curious about what happens if I decided to remarry. Would I lose my benefits? We were married 39 years. Thank you.
You should be able to get married and not lose benefits. If you were to die, your current spouse wouldn't be able to collect off of you though because, you're collecting off someone else's record.

My Xhusband died last June. Within 10 days of his death I went to report it to SSA to see if I can get some of his benefits. I was ten years married to him (in a very abusive marriage). I presented all the paperwork work and I was told , I am not entitled because I was not married for 10YEARS AND NINE MONTHS. IS THAT CORRECT. Please advice. Thank you
Go back to SSA with your paperwork right away! At this current present time, August 2024, MORE than 9 months qualifying time since his death last June 2023, has passed.

Has your husband thought about applying for SSDI? I don't know what State you're in, or what his "Disabilities" are but, it might be worth his time to talk to someone about it. Especially his Doctor or, Doctors. Good luck to both of you.
